It was all fun and games for the fruit fight club, until Bart the Banana took a Coupeville football Gold Card through the head.
Nick Streubel is a beast.
Where once there was a little kid, now stands an imposing 6-foot-4, 280-pound finely-carved slab of beef who makes a living clearing holes for Wolf runners as one of the linchpins to an imposing Coupeville High School offensive line. Joining with fellow giants of the gridiron like Anthony Maggio and Caleb Valko, Streubel is part of a line that tips the scales at around 1,300 pounds.
What might surprise a lot of people is that even though he’s now a bruiser, he remains nimble in the water, where he can still thrash all comers. A high-level competitive swimmer as a young one, following in the (wet) footsteps of older sister Amanda “The Water Wizard” Streubel, he still has records posted at the Vanderzicht Pool in Oak Harbor.
He’s also a heck of a salesman, even with his mom, Nanette Streubel, doing some of the heavy lifting for him — giving Valko (rumored to be the ultimate closer when it comes to pushing merchandise) and their teammates a run for their money as the Wolf squad sold Gold Cards this week to help raise funds to support Coupeville football.
So, thanks to the Streubel clan, I parted ways with $20 and am now the owner of a hard piece of plastic with a CHS schedule and a host of buy-one, get-one deals emblazoned on it.
Will I actually use it? Possibly.
But, if nothing else, when Streubel is named First-Team All-Cascade Conference this season, after Coupeville stuns the “experts” by obliterating the league, I’ll know I put my money behind a winner.
