The only thing that hurts worse than a loss is when you lose half your team in the process.
Friday night was far from pleasant for Coupeville High School football coach Tony Maggio, who saw his squad play a close, competitive game with host Lynden Christian deep into the third quarter, only to then have a rash of injuries and a wave of late scores thoroughly ruin the evening.
While the final score of 51-14 sounds like a blowout, the Wolves, who now sit at 0-3 heading into a three-game home stand against Nooksack Valley, Orcas Island and Granite Falls, were right there with the Lyncs for much of the night. After trailing 21-7 at the half, Coupeville quarterback Gunnar Langvold ripped off a 19-yard dash to the end zone (his second rushing TD of the night) to narrow the margin to a touchdown.
Then the wheels — and a lot of body parts — fell off.
With key running back Jake Tumblin already battling an arm injury, the Wolves lost Korbin Korzan (possible broken foot), team scoring leader Bryce Fleming (deep thigh bruise), Riley Boyd (deep thigh bruise) and Caleb Valko (knee injury), giving the trainer an unexpected, and unwelcome, workout.
How many of the injured players will be ready to play Nooksack Valley in six days is still unclear, but Maggio is sure of one thing — those who can suit up will continue to get in there and scrap. That much was shown by Coupeville’s continued efforts to get back in the game in the waning moments Friday.
“It (the injuries) made for a tough comeback. We were able to still move the ball well, and still was in the game until late in the third,” Maggio said. “We will continue to work hard.
Well, that was unpleasant…
