The tiniest of germs can take down the mightiest of warriors.
That seems to be the case for Coupeville High School lineman extraordinaire Anthony Maggio, who, two days shy of his 18th birthday, may be lost for the season with a staph infection in his leg and knee.
Maggio, who anchors both the offensive and defensive lines for the Wolves, suffered turf burn on his knee during Coupeville’s season-opener at Bellevue Christian. As he played through the next two games, the wound re-opened and never had a chance to heal properly, said Maggio’s father, Wolf head coach Tony Maggio.
At some point infection set in and the younger Maggio is now on a series of antibiotics to fight the infection.
“My medications are working good,” Anthony Maggio said. “I’m hoping that I can get better soon, but I have a ways left to go.”
While it will be a tough battle back, he will have the support of his coaches, teammates, family and the community.
“I hope he heals fast and maybe can come back this year, but we will see,” said Tony Maggio.
