Briscoe, Trujillo spark explosive spikers!!

Toni Crebbin’s cupboard is well-stocked.

The Coupeville High School volleyball coach will lose only three varsity players (Bessie Walstad, Katie Kiel and Lauren Escalle) to graduation this spring, while an influx of talent will come in looking to replace them, when this year’s eighth-grade spikers move on to high school ball.

At the forefront are two players — Tiffany Briscoe and Valen Trujillo — who played varsity the entire season. Right on their heels are the other nine girls who alternated between JV and varsity as the eighth-grade season played out.

“It was a great season,” said Coupeville Middle School coach Amy King. “The girls were fun and hard-working, so will be missed next year, but we will look forward to them adding to the high school squads!”

Delaney Armstrong led a stellar group of servers (“Our serving got stronger as the season went,” King said.), nailing 71 serves in play during the year. Mattea Miller (66) and Trujillo (62) completed the top trio.

“We had strong overhand hitting from Tiffany, Valen, Mattea and Skyler Lawrence, with great setting from Jae LeVine, Ally Roberts, Emily Licence and Holly Mathusek,” King said.

“We had several players who were first year players (Erin Kali-Edgar, Miller, Licence, Lawrence) who really added to the program this year,” she added. “Other returners who did a great job of not complaining, but just working hard and playing the best they could on both JV and varsity courts were Armstrong, LeVine, Roberts, Samee Arrants and Mathusek.”

The highlight of the season came Oct. 15, when the Wolves stuffed Sultan 25-18, 25-17, 13-15 to win their first match dating back to their time together as seventh-graders. They also took sets off of Langley, Sultan and Lakewood and played the epic set of the year — at any level — when they were edged 32-30 in the final set by Langley.

The JV squad beat Northshore 20-16, 20-8 and split matches with Langley, Sultan and Granite Falls.
