These things will drive you crazy.
Late in last night’s mini-playoff football loss to Meridian, on a rainy, mud-soaked field at Blaine, Wolf quarterback Gunnar Langvold tossed a short touchdown pass to a receiver who went down in a crush of players. At the far end of the field, well away from the 50-yard line that I was seated on.
When the Blaine announcer, after much fumbling and stumbling, finally announced the players involved, he credited Jake Tumblin with the pass and Jared Dickson with the reception.
I knew he was at least half wrong, since I clearly saw #6 (Langvold) roll out, not #7 (Tumblin).
The guy catching the pass? Well, that was a little more difficult to see. There was definitely a muddy 8 and something else that looked like a muddy 8, and since Dickson wears #88, it seemed reasonable, so I went with his call when I wrote my story last night.
Turns out, the guy on the PA system was wrong (as he often was during the two quarters involving Coupeville) and the ball had been snagged by Wiley Hesselgrave, younger brother of former Wolf hoops star Marie Hesselgrave. He wears #89 and it was the first varsity touchdown for the freshman receiver/safety.
And, for a few hours at least, until someone pointed out the mistake, I robbed him of his moment. Which sucks.
My story is corrected now, and, as a peace offering, I am taking this space to give you not one, but two shots of young Mr. Hesselgrave, both shot by Melissa Zimmerman-Losey. Remember the face and remember the name, because you’ll be seeing and hearing a lot more about him in the coming years.

Thank you so much for correcting that. And yes he is a big ham as you can tell.
Way to go Wiley…..amazing..
