She’s a volleyball veteran now.

Hope Lodell is still finding her way.

The Coupeville Middle School 7th grader comes from an athletic family (dad Mike is a trash-talking hoops player), but the dead-ringer for Hollywood actress Chloe Moretz (“Kick Ass,” “Hugo”) didn’t catch the organized sports bug until this year.

After making her debut with the Wolf volleyball squad in the fall, she is one of many girls expected to turn out for the start of the middle school girls’ basketball season Jan. 22. While it will be her first time following in her dad’s footsteps, she already seems like a natural.

“I have not played basketball before and I am really excited to play with my friends,” Lodell said. “I haven’t really discovered my strengths in basketball yet. I want to work on harder passes to my teammates.”

She enjoyed her first go-around with volleyball, particularly since she got to play with her friends.

“I loved playing volleyball because it was my first time playing a team sport and I was with a lot of my friends and I am so glad I had that experience with them,” Lodell said. “I loved watching my friends and I improved in volleyball and in teamwork throughout every game.

“I loved going for the ball and that jolt of excitement when you make a good pass,” she added.”My favorite sport would be volleyball because it is so much fun to play and watch.”

Now bitten by the sports bug, Lodell plans to play softball in the spring. She also enjoys doing gymnastics in her free time and likes to write and sing.

Regardless of which sports season she finds herself in, she will always have her friends to draw support from.

“My friends — Kyla Briscoe, Abby Parker, Payton Aparicio, Lauren Bayne, Emma Blanchette and Lion DeShong — have been a big impact on me with supporting me and pushing me to do better,” Lodell said.

The future of Coupeville High School boys’ basketball is out there playing right now.

Many of the boys who suited up for Coupeville Middle School’s 7th and 8th grade teams this season are currently playing for an AAU team that participates in a S.W.I.S.H. league in Skagit County.

The photos above are courtesy of John Fisken, who took a moment out from chronicling Oak Harbor sports, to snap a few pics of the pride of Central Whidbey. We thank him for it.

As they headed out to start a six-game road trip Tuesday night, the Coupeville High School boys’ basketball squad took time out to model their new travel duds for budding fashion photographer Shelli Trumbull.

The snazzy new outfits were purchased by the Coupeville Booster Club, and guarantee the Wolves will out-fashion their foes over the next three weeks.

The basket was no friend to the Wolves Tuesday night.

Despite their best entreaties, the hoop refused to accept the majority of the shots thrown up by the Coupeville High School boys’ basketball team. Playing against the top team in the Cascade Conference on its home court, that doomed them, as they fell 54-16 at King’s.

The loss, which dropped the Wolves to 0-12 overall, 0-7 in league play, kicked off a brutal six-game road trip.

Even with ice-cold shooting, Coupeville stayed close through one quarter, using a bruising defense to limit the Knights to just a 9-2 lead after the first eight minutes. King’s then found its rhythm, however, pouring in double digits (19, 12, 14) in each of the remaining quarters.

The 16 points matched a season-low for the Wolves, who had been coming off of their best offensive showings of the season.

Aaron Trumbull and Ben Etzell paced Coupeville with five apiece, while Drew Chan, Aaron Curtin and Nick Streubel each banked in a bucket.

The Wolves travel to Cedarcrest Friday, Jan. 11, then team up with the Coupeville girls for a double header at Mount Vernon Christian the next day.

They like Nick Streubel. They really, really like Nick Streubel.

In a posting Tuesday, Jordan Johnson of Barton Football Elite broke down the athletes who attended a recent by-invitation football camp that his group runs.

Of Streubel, a Coupeville High School junior, he wrote:

Two other kids that showed up and did phenomenal work were Nick Streubel out of Coupeville and Quadir Griffin out of Hazen. Streubel was awesome all day and will be one of the better lineman in the state at the 1A level.

Someone go check and see if Streubel is blushing yet.
