Gunnar’s first souvenir from a 7-on-7 passing camp on turf.
It may be the off-season, but that doesn’t mean the work has stopped.
Led by junior quarterback Gunnar Langvold, Coupeville High School sent five players to the first in a series of 7-on-7 passing camps at Juanita High School last weekend, and, even being light on numbers, held its own.
The Wolves, who should be back up to full numbers for the next couple of weeks, beat Orcas Island 26-14, despite playing two men down on defense.
They then went toe-to-toe with Air Raid Elite, an all-star squad which pulls in players from several schools. A dropped pass in the end zone prevented the Wolves from making a full comeback, but they held their own with no rest and limited players, a huge positive.
The camps are designed for the skills position players, with Coupeville hopefully drawing a mix of players on a weekly basis from a field that could include Bryce Fleming, Cole Payne, Joey Edwards, Korbin Korzan, Jake Tumblin, Wiley Hesselgrave, Lathom Kelley, Josh Bayne and others.
Coaches are not allowed to take an active role in the camps, so it’s up to the players to run things and Langvold has taken the lead so far.
With Langvold making a run at reclaiming his starting quarterback position as a senior in the fall, the continued development of his passing skills and, more importantly perhaps, leadership skills, bodes well for Coupeville.
