The rise of Coupeville High School football continues.
Playing at a 7-on-7 passing camp at Juanita High School Saturday, the 1A Wolves held their own with a pair of 4A schools, despite not having their most dangerous offensive weapon.
While Coupeville lost both of its games (being nipped 27-20 by Lake Stevens and falling 33-20 to Marysville), let me repeat — the Wolves played 4A schools and stayed close. Without Jake Tumblin.
And not run-of-the-mill 4A schools. Lake Stevens went 8-3 last season while Marysville was 9-3.
Plus, unlike week one, they didn’t have to play two men down on defense, as they got a full seven players in the cars, strapped them in, and drove off the Island before any one could change their minds. So, win-win.
The Wolf squad was led by Gunnar Langvold and included Bryce Fleming, Joey Edwards, Cole Payne and Wiley Hesselgrave, plus a pair of brothers who have just been approved to transfer to Coupeville — Tyree and Ramon Booker.
The Wolf seven-pack was a young squad, as well. Hesselgrave and Payne are only freshmen, while Ramon Booker is an eighth-grader.
