Help is on the way.
In a reversal of recent seasons, when a parade of young, talented players in multiple sports (boys’ basketball, girls’ tennis, volleyball) left Coupeville when their families moved away, this time the players are coming here to stay.
Tyree and Ramon Booker, who are currently a sophomore and an eighth-grader, have transferred from Oak Harbor. Originally from Sacramento, California, the duo are basketball and football players and have already begun to work into the Wolf system.
Both attended 7-on-7 football passing camps with other CHS skills position players recently, meshing their talents with current Wolves such as Gunnar Langvold, Wiley Hesselgrave, Bryce Fleming, Cole Payne and Joey Edwards.
While sports will take up a chunk of their time, the Booker family made the move to Coupeville largely because of the academic chances. Coupeville offers programs that Oak Harbor did not.
“I plan to study music in college and Coupeville offers music production, which is a class that I’m really interested in that isn’t offered in Oak Harbor,” Tyree Booker said.
“CMS and CHS have some classes that I was interested in taking that North Whidbey Middle and Oak Harbor High School don’t have,” added Ramon Booker. “Sports wise, I feel that they have great football and basketball coaches who will help me earn athletic scholarships to play in college.
“At Coupeville, I feel like I am part of a family.”
Ramon picks language arts and math as his favorite subjects, while his older brother veers towards English, biology, Spanish and, of course, music production.
Away from the classroom, Ramon gravitates towards a wide range of music (hip hop, Christian rap and R & B) and loves the “Home Alone” films, while Tyree enjoys “spending time studying for my classes and being with my family.”
Of course, this is a sports web site, and both Bookers are being featured because they’re talented athletes.
Tyree favors football (“It’s a sport I’ve always enjoyed playing and watching since I was younger. My strengths as a player are my work ethic and desire to win”), while Ramon can’t pick a favorite.
“I like them both equally, because they’re exciting,” Ramon Booker said. “I think my greatest strengths as a player is my ability to lead, be a great teammate and I can play multiple positions in either sport.”
“I always play to win!”
