Makana Stone liked winning so much, she decided to double up her fun.
After winning both of her events in her first track meet, the fleet-footed Coupeville High School freshman roared to four wins Thursday in a three-team showdown in the wilds of Sultan.
Running against 2A competition from Granite Falls and the host Turks, Stone and her 1A Wolf teammates acquitted themselves nicely, winning five events on both the boys and girls sides of the meet.
While it doesn’t have the raw numbers to win overall meet titles, Coupeville finished solidly in second in both the boys (behind Granite Falls) and girls (behind Sultan) final standings.
Stone blitzed the world, sweeping the sprints (100, 200, 400), then running a leg on a winning 4 x 200 squad that included Madison Tisa McPhee, fellow freshman phenom Sylvia Hurlburt and Jai’Lysa Hoskins.
Tisa McPhee easily buried her foes in the 300 hurdles, while Nick Streubel flexed his muscles on the boys side, winning the shot put and discus.
Streubel’s hurl of 120 feet, one inch in the discus was a personal record.
Hot on his heels was sophomore teammate Carson Risner, who jumped an astounding 17 feet from his first try a week ago. In only his second meet, the son of legendary Wolf thrower Jennie Cross showed he may give Streubel a run for his money in the discus.
The Wolf boys added victories in the 800 from Matthew Hampton and in both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays. The Wolves used six different runners in those events, with veteran Stephen Edwards and freshman Jared Helmstadter pulling double duty.
