The 4 x 100 team awaits the start of their race. Left to right, Hurlburt, Rachel Wenzel, Hoskins and Nicole Becker (waving baton).
Well, that didn’t take very long.
In just their second try, the quartet of seniors Madison Tisa McPhee and Jai’Lysa Hoskins and freshmen Sylvia Hurlburt and Makana Stone smashed Coupeville High School’s record in the 4 x 200 relay.
Coming against strong competition at the Tri-district Preview meet in Shoreline Saturday, the Wolves romped, blowing King’s best away by more than six seconds.
It was a strong day all around for Stone and Tisa McPhee, who each won four events at the seven-team event, which was set up to give athletes a chance to compete on the same track they will run at during the tri-district meet in May. That meet is the final stop before the state meet in Cheney.
Tisa McPhee swept two hurdles events and ran on two winning relay teams, while Stone blitzed the field in the 100 and 200, then joined her older teammate on winning 4 x 200 and 4 x 400 relay units. The victories lifted the freshman to a perfect 10-for-10 in her short high school running career.
Matthew Hampton was the brightest star on the boys side of the standings, rolling to a win in the 3200, while Nick Streubel grabbed a PR in the shot put, finishing fourth in an ultra-competitive field.
The meet drew 1A schools Bush, Chimacum, King’s and Coupeville and 2B squads from La Conner, Concrete and Seattle Lutheran.
