"Do it!!"

“Do it!!”

This is it.

When the Coupeville High School softball team hosts Granite Falls Tuesday afternoon (4 PM), that’s all she wrote for home games for the 2012-2013 school year.

There’s nothing left. End of story. El finito.

Baseball and boys’ soccer are on vacation at this point, and all further softball games, track meets, tennis and golf matches, even middle school track meets, are on the road after today.

You fail to show up for Senior Night, as the Wolves bid adieu to Bessie Walstad and Maria Rockwell, and you have nothing left until late August/early September (I haven’t seen a schedule for next year yet) rolls around.

So, don’t be that person. The one who keeps on saying they’re going to attend at least one home game this year and never do.

Leave work early. Skip out on whatever The Man wants you to do with your time. Be there. Pack the stands. Or feel guilty for the next three, three-and-a-half months.

Your choice.

Austin Fields (in red) watches a majestic shot soar skywards.

Austin Fields went out with a bang.

Firing an 87 over 18 holes at Snohomish Golf and Country Club Monday, the Coupeville High School senior finished 10th in a field of 33 at the Cascade Conference Medalist Tournament.

The final league event of his stellar career, it was a prelude to the postseason, which kicks off Thursday. Fields and sophomore sister Christine, who shot a 90 in the girls’ competition, now head to districts.

Then, if past results are any indication, the pair will wade through tri-districts May 13-14 and on to state May 21-22. Christine placed 8th at the 1A state meet as a freshman, while Austin has had back-to-back top 40 finishes the past two seasons.

Archbishop Murphy, paced by medalist Sean Goldfinch, won the boys’ team competition Monday. Girls’ team results were not available.

Two girls in their final go-around and two girls in their first go-round will form Coupeville High School’s doubles teams for the district tournament.

Seniors Holly Craggs and Emily Gallahar won a team-wide tournament to net the #1 spot, while freshmen Sydney Autio and Samantha Martin clawed their way past several strong teams to grab the #2 spot.

The duos will join singles players Amanda d’Almeida and Iris Ryckaert and travel to Langley Thursday.

All six Wolves will have their work cut out for them with a much-deeper tourney field than in previous years.

South Whidbey, which had been a dominant force in the 2A tennis world, dropped down to 1A this season, and the Falcons and fellow newcomer Blaine are the overwhelming favorites, with Coupeville, Friday Harbor and a handful of others hoping for an upset or two.

Sylvia Hurlburt

High noon approaches, and the gunslingers are ready.

One of the fastest groups of track stars to ever wear the red and black will head into the 1A District 1 meet this week as nothing less than favorites.

Coupeville High School freshman sprinter Makana Stone (200, 400), senior hurdler Madison Tisa McPhee (100 hurdles) and the girls’ 4 x 200 relay squad (Tisa McPhee, freshman Sylvia Hurlburt, Stone, senior Jai’Lysa Hoskins) are ranked #1.

Stone is also ranked #2 in the 100 (based on times) but to a girl, Ashley Driscoll of King’s, who she whipped head-to-head at the Cascade Conference meet. Tisa McPhee is #2 in the 300 hurdles, and both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 teams are seeded #3.

To qualify for districts (Wednesday and Friday), the first of three postseason showdowns (tri-districts and state follow), athletes have to be in the top 16 in their event.

Tisa McPhee qualified in six events, while Stone, Hoskins and junior Josiah Campbell each qualified in five.

Things can still get topsy-turvy, however, as some athletes may opt out of events they have qualified for, which would allow some lower-ranked competitors to get called up to the big time.

With that in mind, here are the CHS athletes who currently have qualified for districts, with their current seedings:

100 — Makana Stone (2nd), Jai’Lysa Hoskins (10th), Sylvia Hurlburt (16th)

Bessie

Bessie Walstad and fellow senior Maria Rockwell will be honored Tuesday, before their final home game.

The Wolf softball squad controls its own destiny.

After pounding Archbishop Thomas Murphy 17-8 Friday, Coupeville High School holds a one-game lead over Island rival South Whidbey with two to play in the race to grab a #1 seed for the 1A District 1 tourney.

The Wolves have four Cascade Conference victories, while the Falcons have three after shocking first-place Cedarcrest. Coupeville holds the tiebreaker, having taken two of three in the all-Island royal rumble.

A home game against Granite Falls Tuesday and a road game at Sultan Thursday wrap the regular season for the Wolves. South Whidbey hosts ATM, then travels to Granite Falls.

Unlike baseball, a #1 seed won’t earn the Wolves a home game, as the entire district tournament for softball is held at Janicki Fields in Sedro Woolley.

The #1 seed from the Cascade Conference will open the double-elimination tourney with a game against the #5 seed from the Northwest Conference, while the runner-up will square off with the #3 seed from the NWC.

Win or lose, Coupeville will play two games in Sedro Woolley Friday. If they win at least one of those, they’ll get back on the bus for a return trip the next day.

Four of eight teams advance out of districts and on to tri-districts, which will be held in Kent May 16-18.
