Hurlburt double-knots her laces, so her shoes don’t fly off when she hits Mach-5.

They’re coming, and they’re fast.

Six Coupeville High School track stars — two seniors, a sophomore and three freshmen — head to Cheney tomorrow for the 1A state track meet, which runs Friday and Saturday. Is Eastern Washington ready to be invaded by Randy King and his Supreme Six?

In my imagination, King, the quietly intense longtime track guru, is driving the family station wagon while Madison Tisa McPhee, Jai’Lysa Hoskins, Marisa Etzell, Makana Stone, Sylvia Hurlburt and Kirsten Pelroy cause all sorts of havoc in the back seat.

“Are we there yet? ARE WE THERE YET?!?!?!?!?” “She’s on my side!” “She’s TOUCHING me!!!!”

“I will turn this car around, so help me, if I hear one more … freakin’ air conditioner never works in this thing and … NO, I DO NOT WANT TO LISTEN TO THE GREATEST HITS OF CARLY RAE JEPSEN!!!!!!!! Where’s a freakin’ Denny’s when you want one?!?!?”

Yep, that’s how I imagine it.

I could be wrong. But that’s what I’m sticking with.

Like it or not, next year may be a rebuilding year.

At least 10 of the 17 Coupeville High School boys’ soccer players who earned a varsity letter won’t be back in the red and black next season. The Wolves lose eight seniors, plus already know that freshman Dawson d’Almeida and sophomore Jeremy Copenhaver are leaving due to family moves.

But Wednesday night was about honoring what happened this season and not worrying about what will come later.

Leading the way at a team banquet were seniors Luke Pelant (MVP) and Nathan Lamb (Most Inspirational) and two underclassmen who ARE expected back — junior Jared Dickson (Most Improved) and freshman Tanner Kircher (Rookie of the Year).

Pelant and Lamb were also noticed by rival Cascade Conference coaches, with both being named Second-Team All-Conference.

Earning letters were seniors Kole Kellison, Nathan Kircher, Lamb, Jacob Lovell, Pelant, Tim Quinn, Danny Savalza and Josh Wilsey.

Joining them were juniors Brett Arnold, Dickson and Sean Donley, sophomores CJ Caidic, Copenhaver and Joel Walstad and freshmen Zane Bundy, d’Almeida and Tanner Kircher.

Earning participation certificates were Cameron Boyd, Seth Campbell, Garrett Compton, Josh Datin, Beauman Davis, Ryan Freeman, Jason Knoll, Oscar Liquidano, Connor McCormick, Cody Menges and Loren Nelson.

"Hop in

“College golf, here I come!!”

Day two was a mixed bag.

One Coupeville High School golfer surged Wednesday, while the other lost some ground at the 1A state golf tourney in Lake Spanaway.

Wolf senior Austin Fields capped his third go-round at the big dance by firing an 83 to jump 13 spots in the final standings. His 29th place finish topped his sophomore (37th) and junior (36th) results.

Younger sister Christine struggled a bit, however, carding a 98, ten strokes off her performance from Tuesday. She dropped from a tie for 8th at the start of the day to a final showing of 15th.

She was 8th as a freshman.

Ross Kukula of Ilwaco won his second straight boys’ title, pulling off an eight-stroke win and leading his school to the team title.

On the girls side, Bree Wanderscheid of Goldendale turned a three-stroke deficit into a six-stroke victory with a brilliant second round. Goldendale won the team title.

The only other Whidbey golfer to make it to day two was South Whidbey’s Jenna Kaik, who shot an 88 Wednesday and claimed 12th place.

Lexie (left) and Brittany Black.

Stylin'.

Stylin’.

The early days.

The early days.

She is the best.

As she turns 26 today, Lexie Black (born with an E, so it stays there, lil’ missy!) the former Coupeville High School basketball star (she still holds a record for the most blocks in a 1A state playoff game), college hoops stud, superb barista, even-better journalist, international supermodel in the making and Milla Jovovich doppleganger, is still off-the-charts awesome.

From her days as a youthful scalawag behind the counter at Videoville to that moment when she embraced all six feet, two inches and stopped slouching and finally stood straight and proud, she was, and is, a shining example of what Coupeville can produce.

She will tell you she doesn’t know what you’re talking about, but you can’t go through life and not realize at some point why everyone around you thinks you’re awesome. Now she just has to accept it.

Once upon a time I thought about calling this blog Lexie Black’s Block Party, which would have been the coolest blog name ever, even if no one understood it.

For young Wolf basketball players now, especially ones who have height and size and long arms like Lexie, I wish that they would commit to playing the game the way she did.

As half of the immortal Black ‘n Blue Sisters, with sidekick lil’ sis Brittany running on the wing, Lexie owned the paint. As sweet and likeable a person as you will ever meet off the court, she thrashed folks on the hardwood.

She believed every shot was hers to reject and every rebound was hers to haul in. She would not back down. Ever.

It is quite simple why the most sustained run of excellence any sports program has had at CHS in the past 20 years came from girls’ basketball.

With the Black sisters, Ashley Ellsworth-Bagby, Tina Lyness and others, the Wolves believed they were going to state, never doubted it, and followed through, year after year.

The current generation could do the same, if they played like Lexie.

You can look like a super model, be a goofball off the court and freak people out once you step on the hardwood.

It’s called bein’ awesome. It’s called bein’ Lexie Black.

Julia Myers is back.

Having battled through knee surgery and an extensive rehab, the Coupeville High School sophomore is returning to the soccer pitch after missing an entire high school season.

One of 18 girls tabbed when the roster for the 2013/2014 edition of the GU18 Whidbey Islanders was named Tuesday night, she and her new teammates will have a busy year ahead of them.

The Islanders, coached by Sean LeVine and Scott Rosenkranz, play three summer tournaments.

After taking a break for the high school soccer season, they’ll return to practice in November for a season that runs December-March. That includes a State Cup tourney in January, which means the booters will be playing twice every weekend that month (while some are also doing double time with high school basketball).

“It is a BIG commitment,” LeVine said. “The skill level is good, but we will again be a young U18 team, as only two players are true U18 players and we have a couple as young as U15.”

The roster is truly an all-Island affair, with 10 players from Oak Harbor, six from Coupeville and two from South Whidbey.
