I'm gonna say it. Coach Brad Trumbull (left) looks like a kid in this photo!!

I’m gonna say it. Does Brad Trumbull (far left) ever age? The man found the fountain of youth.

“Who’s getting pizza?!?! WE ARE!!!!!”

We’re going back to a time. A time long ago. A place called the mid-2000’s.

OK, not quite the awe-inspiring trip you might have expected.

Still, thanks to the wonders of photos found lost on a camera by ace photo whiz Shelli Trumbull, you do get to see current Coupeville High School baseball players back before they could even think about growing facial hair.

So, there’s that.

Underclassmen carried the day.

Five Coupeville High School softball players earned All-Conference honors, with three of the five being sophomores.

Hailey Hammer, who played first and third base while delivering big hits at the plate, was named a First-Team pick by Cascade Conference coaches, while fellow tenth-grader Madeline Strasburg, an outfielder, was tabbed for the Second Team.

Sophomore pitcher/outfielder McKayla Bailey, junior infielder/outfielder Madeline Roberts and senior catcher/first baseman Bessie Walstad all received Honorable Mention.

Team awards and varsity letters were handed out Tuesday night at a season-ending banquet (there were rumors of cheesecake), with Walstad, Roberts and senior hurler Maria Rockwell honored as Captains.

Foreign exchange student Elena Jimenez Guerra, who NEVER stopped chattering on the bench (“You got this Madi! You got this babe!!”) was selected Most Enthusiastic, Strasburg was tapped as Most Improved and junior Breeanna Messner won the Coaches Award.

Taking home letters were Sydney Aparicio, Bailey, Julia Felici, Hammer, Messner, Chevy Reyes, Roberts, Rockwell, Haley Sherman, Strasburg and Walstad.

Jimenez Guerra and sophomore Monica Vidoni earned participation certificates.

They live on to play another day.

Both of Coupeville High School’s golfers made the cut after day one of the 1A state golf tourney at Lake Spanaway Tuesday and will return to the course tomorrow morning for another go-round.

Wolf sophomore Christine Fields is sitting in a tie for 8th place on the girls side after carding an 88. That’s nine strokes better than her debut round last season, which she followed up with an epic charge the next day to finish 8th as a freshman.

Madisen Bentley of Life Christian, who finished 4th in 2012, is sitting in 1st place.

On the boys side, CHS senior Austin Fields made it three-for-three when he snuck in under the wire to advance to day two. After finishing 37th as a sophomore and 36th as a junior, he sits in a tie for 39th currently.

His round of 85 was right at the cut line and he waved bye-bye to 38 golfers who rang up an 86 or worse.

Defending state champ Ross Kukula of Ilwaco is two strokes up on Blaine’s Ryan Wallen with 18 holes to play.

Hey, I’m not saying this is perfect.

But, six days after its May 15 meet against King’s and host Northshore Christian Academy, the Coupeville Middle School track team has posted at least SOME of its results online at athletic.net.

I kind of think the Wolf boys (as an entire team) and the girl throwers are getting shafted this time around, but I can only report what I can report, so here goes — the unofficial, official, probably half-right results:

100 (7th) — Kyla Briscoe 15.14; Allyson Wenzel 16.02; Abby Parker 16.20; Mckenzie Meyer 16.27; Ashley Smith 16.60; Hayley Dauphinais 17.94; Maggie Crimmins 18.09

100 (8th) — Lauren Grove 14.96; Valen Trujillo 14.97; Robin Cedillo 16.59

200 (7th) — Smith 35.68

400 (7th) — Sage Renninger 1:11.16

400 (8th) — Carlie Rosenkrance 1:09.00

75 hurdles (7th) — Jillian Pape 14.40; Briscoe 16.00; Lauren Bayne 16.88; Wenzel 16.91; Dauphinais 17.76

75 hurdles (8th) — Rosenkrance 13.90

4 x 100 (7th) — Bayne, Parker, Smith, Wenzel 1:05.03

Keep on working.

Morgan Payne

For once, the Cascade Conference paid attention.

Breaking a trend recently of snubbing Coupeville High School athletes in all sports, league coaches picked two Wolves as First-Team All-Conference baseball selections Monday. Overall, five CHS diamond men were honored.

Junior pitcher Ben Etzell and junior outfielder Kurtis Smith were tabbed to the first team, while junior infielder Morgan Payne earned Second-Team honors. Junior catcher Jake Tumblin and sophomore pitcher Aaron Curtin received honorable mention selections.

Little 1A school Coupeville went 10-12 in the just-concluded season, beating every team in the 1A/2A league at least once with the exception only of defending 2A state champs Archbishop Thomas Murphy.

The Wolves pushed ATM to the limit in an instant classic at home, however. That looks even more impressive now that the Wildcats will play in the state semifinals this weekend against Tumwater, two wins away from capturing back-to-back titles.

Not surprisingly, ATM dominated the voting, with shortstop Trevor Morrison being named league MVP. The Wildcats one-two pitching duo of seniors Zander Clouse and Derrick Mahlum joined Etzell as First-Team pitchers.

South Whidbey’s Tom Fallon was picked as the coach of the year.
