The future of Wolf boys’ basketball is on its way and it includes my former “assistant manager.”
During my years at David’s DVD Den (2007-2009), Daniel Olson would camp out behind the counter and operate the computer and cash drawer whenever his family came to the store.
Jump forward five years and Olson is now a sixth grader(!) at Coupeville Middle School (older brother Ben is a freshman on the high school JV squad) and a fast-rising b-ball star.
This season the younger Olson is joining a batch of other hot-shooting hoops wizards on a Coupeville SWISH basketball team.
The squad, which is made up of nine sixth-graders and one precocious, fast-dribbling third grader (Logan Downes), is in its third week of practice. The first game is Jan. 10.
The roster includes Olson, Logan Downes, older brother Sage Downes, Jake Mitten, Erik Webster, Michael Laska, Alex Jimenez, Matthew Kelley, Dakota Eck and Raymond Anderson.
With the exception of the younger Downes, everyone on the roster has at least four seasons of ball under their belts.
Kelley, who played for an 8-4 Oak Harbor team last year, is the seasoned vet, entering his seventh season.
Current CHS freshman (and big brothers) Hunter Downes and Ben Olson help coach the team when they have a break in their own basketball schedule.
