Coupeville High School’s bleachers — state of the art when disco was king. (Photos courtesy Shelli Trumbull)

Passage of the levy would help finish the plan to bring the school’s baseball, softball and soccer fields all together.
Personally, I would like super-cushioned bleachers that come equipped with heating pads and butt-massagers and…
Oh, we’re not getting those unless Bill Gates swoops in with some sweet, sweet cash? OK, well, I guess I’ll settle for some bleachers that actually unfold.
There was a chunk of the basketball season this year when we were unable to use the bleachers right behind the Coupeville bench, because the vintage 1979 wooden seats refused to pop out.
They’re tired and they want to be retired.
Go outside and it’s the same, where Makana Stone, one of the fastest runners in the state, practices on a track oval that was brand new and shiny 30 years ago.
Now, it can’t even host a home meet, which means Wolf fans are denied the chance to see Stone, Lathom Kelley, Sylvia Hurlburt, Jared Helmstadter and Co. in action for an entire season.
Why do I bring these things up?
Because there is a simple answer.
Vote Yes on the school district’s current levy and we can fix the bleachers, the track and a ton of other things.
Like the elementary school bathrooms that look like something out of the 1840’s.
But don’t take my (slightly informed) word for it.
Get off your duff and attend one of the three informational meetings/tours of the facilities that the district still has planned.
Velvet-voiced Superintendent Dr. Jim Shank will be your guide to what is, what could be and what should be.
The meetings:
Monday, Mar. 30 (5:30-6:00) Elementary school library
Tuesday, Mar. 31 (6:00-6:30) Middle School foyer
Monday, April 13 (6:00-7:00) Gym complex and athletic fields
In the meantime, you can pop over to http://coupeville.k12.wa.us/levy/ for much more info.
Think about the kids.
But, mainly, think about making it easier for me — the one who has to sit on those bleachers six months a year.
My fanny demands your Yes vote.

Dear Mr. Shank, In September 2014 the principal of The Coupeville Elementary School told me that he would not allow my daughter to attend school. After he made it clear he had the final say in the matter I asked where she could go to school. He was very clear that I could take her to private school because we had the money to pay for it. This was devastating news to my family especially to my 6 year old daughter. We had filled out the required forms and supplied the necessary information. My daughter had met all the first grade teachers. She had a tour of the school and was then shown her class room. She was excited to start school! We went to the store and bought over $100.00 of required school supplies. My daughter had her new supplies including her first backpack and lunchbox ready for her first day of Public School. She had a little outfit she was ready to wear and she couldn’t wait to start learning. My friend, a retired Washington State Public School Principal arrived to share in the excitement of this memorable day. However there was no first day of school for Eva! My friend helped me fight for my daughter’s rights. There was no legal reason my daughter was denied a seat in the classroom. If Eva had been anything other than a white girl she would have not been treated this way. This was clearly discrimination!
We are owed an apology. I do not want a statement that you are sorry we misunderstood. We did talk with your office. Then we talked with officials in Olympia. There is no valid excuse for the trauma you put us through. Eventually the school said they would go through the effort to get her books and a desk and she could attend school. We had another option for Eva’s education by then and we took it. The details of this situation are being reviewed by The Office Of Civil Rights. I do not support the Levy. The real problems in the Coupeville schools can not be fixed with money!
I find it interesting that the email you left with this comment doesn’t actually work.
You’ve left the same comment on every pro-levy place possible.
Why are you hiding behind a fake email address?
