Tacoma’s Venajah Woods (left) and Coupeville grad Raechel Kundert have earned internships with the Japanese Cultural Community Center of Washington in Seattle. (Photo property of JCCCW)

Raechel Kundert is a bright, shining star.

The Coupeville High School grad is a senior at the University of Washington, where she carries a triple major.

You read that right, as Kundert is studying Linguistics, Japanese, and Asian Languages and Cultures.

Which shouldn’t leave the former Wolf much free time.

But Kundert will carve out a chunk of her schedule to accept a new honor, having been tabbed for a winter Ganbaru internship with the Japanese Cultural Community Center of Washington.

She’ll join Venajah Woods, a Psychology major from Tacoma, in working as a Social Media and Marketing intern for the JCCCW.

Ganbaru translates to “give one’s best effort,” and interns work on cultural and historical programs, annual events, and office operations.

Kundert, who was a talented musician and football player during her time in Coupeville, grew up on Whidbey Island and became interested in Japanese culture at a young age.

A big fan of the country’s pop culture, she also studied karate in elementary school.

Coupeville grad SarahRose Bernhardt (left) is now a firefighter for the city of Buckley. (Photos poached from Bernhardt’s Facebook page)

It’s official.

Coupeville is providing the world with first responders.

Or at least the state.

SarahRose Bernhardt, a 2004 CHS grad, has been officially sworn in as a firefighter with the City of Buckley Fire Department.

Sitting below Mount Rainier, Buckley is part of Pierce County.

Bernhardt becomes at least the fourth former Wolf athlete to earn a first responder job in a city far away from Whidbey Island in the last year.

She joins Zane Bundy (Kittitas County Sheriff’s Department), Aaron Trumbull (Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue), and CJ Smith (Mercer Island Police Department).

During her Coupeville days, Bernhardt was a busy bee, participating in drama, cheer, Hi Q Academic Quiz Bowl, the Learning Partner program, and Honor Society.

She was also a school board rep, a tutor, and an active volunteer in the community.

Which hasn’t stopped in the years since – just in a different community these days.

Former Wolf track star Madison Tisa McPhee flaunts some fashion. (Photos property of Level Up Apparel Company)

Hangin’ out with her co-star.

She’s kind of a big deal.

Former Coupeville track supernova Madison Tisa McPhee has moved into the world of fashion, it appears.

The fleet-footed Cow Town alumni can be seen in recent advertising for the Level Up Apparel Company.

Founded by Maddi Kempf-Stoltman, a barrel racer and YouTube creator, the company is taking off, driven by an admirable philosophy.

“Cool clothes are great, but products with a strong meaning are even better,” is the motto which fuels the company.

“Level Up was my reminder that in those moments, you can stay down, and let life take its toll,” Kempf-Stoltman says on her website. “Or you can Level Up, be better, and be stronger because of the cards you were dealt.”

Tisa McPhee, one of the most naturally-gifted athletes to cruise the hallways at CHS, was a volleyball and soccer player, but made her biggest statement as a track athlete.

A strong hurdler and relay runner, she brought home three state meet medals, and still holds the school record in the 300 hurdles.

Away from school, Tisa McPhee has also been an active horsewoman, racking up an impressive collections of awards while astride one of her equine pals.

She works as an Emergency Medical Technician for Cascade Medical Center in Leavenworth.

McKenzie Bailey, prairie legend.

All eyes on her.

McKenzie Bailey, vaunted member of the Coupeville Sports Hall o’ Fame, and sharer (with sisters McKayla and Mollie) of the title of Prairie Photo Bomb Queen, continues to get noticed.

This time around she’s being honored by Central Washington University, named as one of three “Wildcats to Watch” for December.

Bailey, a 2020 CWU grad who is currently teaching 8th grade science in Ellensburg, was nominated “for her involvement as an intern in the STEM teaching program.”

Part of the Engle family, which has lived and farmed in Coupeville for decades, the middle of Rusty and Donna Bailey’s three daughters played volleyball, basketball, and tennis during her days as a Wolf.
