#77 is back in action, and still punchin’ the pedal through the metal.

Coupeville Elementary student Scotlyn Helm, who has torn up the racetrack since joining the Washington Quarter Midget Association, returned to action this weekend.

This time around, though, she participated in her first dirt track events, after previously racing on harder surfaces.

Scotlyn is aiming at racing again in January, which should give dad Jerry some time to clean off all the dirt from her speedy ride.

“I feel the need … the need for speed.”

Ready to rumble.

A little snow can’t stop Coupeville’s #1 speed demon.

She still has her pedal through the metal.

Coupeville Elementary student Scotlyn Helm wrapped up her inaugural season racing cars with the Washington Quarter Midget Association Saturday and did so with great success.

The speedy racer competed in four races this season, across two different classes, landing on the awards podium three times.

“Couldn’t be more proud of her accomplishments in such a short time,” said rad dad Jerry Helm.

She has a need for speed.

Scotlyn Helm is not done with racing, however, as she will pivot to dirt track racing in November.

If you’re interested in sponsoring her in her driving adventures — she needs dirt tires among other things — you can do so by popping over to Venmo and looking up her dad’s account at Jerry-Helm-1.

Scotlyn Helm is coming for all your auto racing trophies. All of them, I said. (Photos courtesy Jerry Helm)

Scotlyn Helm is the terror of the Monroe Speedway.

The Coupeville Elementary student overcame high temps and a packed field of contenders to run strongly during a weekend of fast cars and screeching tires.

Helm, daughter of Jerry and Lindsey, was competing with the Washington Quarter Midget Association.

Plotting strategy with papa.

She attended her driver training graduation ceremony, then climbed behind the wheel of her fiery purple bomber to blitz her foes.

Qualifying fourth overall, Helm zipped into the “A” Main event for the second straight time, before winning her first race.

Roaring up from the fifth slot (out of eighth racers) during her heat, she “ran a super clean race and battled all the way” according to dad, motoring across the line in front of the pack.

Fresh off nabbing the W, Helm returned to run two more races and was just as sharp.

Scotlyn came out firing on all cylinders to take home some hardware,” Jerry Helm said.

“The smile on her face after receiving her first trophy and winning her first-ever heat race, is something that I’ll never forget.”

Along with trophies, the pedal-through-the-metal racer was also invited to move up and compete in a faster class the next time she visits the racetrack.

Keeping cool in the summer heat.

Standing tall among the award winners.

Hanging out with her fan club.

Scotlyn Helm, ready to run you off the road. (Photos courtesy Jerry Helm)

Scotlyn Helm had a lot of firsts this past weekend.

First official race as a Washington Quarter Midget Association driver.

Her first in-race wreck.

And, most importantly, her first bounce-back after said wreck to reclaim her racing honor.

Helm, a Coupeville Elementary student with a burning need for speed, was behind the wheel at the Monroe Speedway Sunday, where she claimed second in her heat.

That came after a crash and some emergency pit stop repairs.

Not content to stop there, Helm then participated in the “A Main” event, finishing 7th overall despite being run into the wall at one point.

Credit Scotlyn’s fast foot on the gas and ability to cut tight turns on the oval.

But also send a little of that praise to dad Jerry, who was her main man in the pits.

“She bent two axels and steering rods but put up a good fight against more experienced racers for her first race after facing some adversity in car repairs,” papa Helm said.

“The sportsmanship of this group is amazing,” he added. “All the other dads act as pit crew for each other!”

Scotlyn returns to action July 30-31, when she’ll be back in Monroe for a doubleheader full of squealing tires (and hopefully no in-race collisions).

Getting by with a little help from dad.

Eyeballing the competition.

It’s a pre-race traffic jam.

She has a need … a need for speed.

Coupeville ace Scotlyn Helm is a busy bee these days.

She’s got a new baby brother to help take care of, a school year to finish up, and a souped-up car to put through its paces.

When she’s not busy with her other 1,001 projects, Scotlyn puts the pedal through the metal at the Monroe Speedway, where she’s completing the Novice Driver Training Program with the Washington Quarter Midget Association.

Helm shows off the Purple Bomber.

Scotlyn will put in three weeks of training, learning the ins and outs of her car and life on the track, then begin racing season.

Based on family history, you should be able to spot her with ease once the flag drops — she’ll be the one way out in front.

“Beep-beep, champion coming through!”
