Playing in the kind of weather that would have been nice to see during the high school season (ha!), Coupeville High School baseball players are enjoying balmy summer days on the diamond.

Five Wolves (Morgan Payne, Kurtis Smith, Aaron Trumbull, Cole Payne and Aaron Curtin) are playing with an American Legion squad in South Whidbey, while Ben Etzell is suiting up for the Skagit Sox.

“This is a bat, son. I’m gonna use it to pound on your puny pitching.”

“See, told you! Now, feet, let’s get moving. They don’t call me ‘Wheels’ for nothin’!!”

Aaron Trumbull brings the heat on the mound.

 An actual South Whidbey kid on a South Whidbey squad? It’s true, as Charlie Patterson connects at the plate.

He does what he can.

Forced into exile and made to wear the colors of a rival school, Coupeville High School senior-to-be Kurtis Smith, along with four Wolf teammates, is rockin’ the blue and white for the South Whidbey American Legion baseball squad this spring.

With no Coupeville team this year, Smith, Aaron Trumbull, Aaron Curtin and the Payne boys, Morgan and Cole, are traipsing down South to play alongside Falcons.

And the meshed team is really starting to click, ripping off big wins recently against Marysville (12-2) and Lynden (7-1). The two-game winning streak has lifted South Whidbey’s record to 3-7, with six games left to play on the regular-season schedule.

“AAAAAAAAAAAA!!! It’s on my shoe! It’s on my shoe!!”

Then the bug got smashed with one mighty blow…

And everyone celebrated.

There was joy in the land.

But one player felt great sadness…

“It’s the circle of life, boy. We’re baseball men. We crush bugs. You want to go hug and sing around the campfire with ’em, maybe you’re more a soccer kind of guy…”

Is that what really happened?

I’d like to think so.

A few days ago, we brought you the first blow in the Great Cuteness War of 2013, as the son of former Wolf greats Erik and Julie (Swankie) Wheat made his debut rockin’ the rally cap.

But now he has a rival, as the son of former Wolf superstar Kassie (Lawson) O’Neil launches his bid for the crown while hanging out at the American Legion game of uncle Kurtis Smith.

Will it be like “Highlander?” Can there only be one? Or will the duo unite and rule the internet with their cuteness?

Only time will tell.
