The weather gods were not on Coupeville’s side.

Playing on a muddy field full of puddles Tuesday, the Wolf boys’ soccer squad out-shot host Friday Harbor by ten shots, yet came away with a disappointing 1-0 loss to open the new season.

Coupeville banged away for 22 shots on goal, but the biggest heart-breaker came with ten minutes to play, when nature, and not the Wolverine goalie, stopped Nathan Lamb from tying the game.

Nathan beat their keeper with a shot,” Coupeville coach Paul Mendes said. “The ball was hit with plenty of power and was about to cross the goal line when it was stopped by a mud puddle.

“It was one of those nights…”

Despite the soggy conditions — the Wolf girls’ tennis squad had been scheduled to travel with the booters, but changed plans earlier in the day after hearing the forecast — Coupeville mounted numerous charges.

It wasn’t to be, however, and Friday Harbor got the only goal it needed from Michael Hoeler on a scramble in the goal mouth in the 22nd minute of the game.

“A hard fought game, right to the end,” Mendes said. “We look forward to playing them again later in the season.”

The two non-conference foes play the rematch on Whidbey Island Wednesday, April 17.

That most dastardly of spring assassins — rain — has washed away half of opening day.

Both the Coupeville High School boys’ soccer and girls’ tennis squads were scheduled to travel to Friday Harbor today for their season openers, but now just one of the two teams will depart town.

With persistent rain making tennis courts slick everywhere, the Wolf vs. Wolverine showdown will be pushed back to another day.

Non-stop rain on Whidbey makes Wednesday’s scheduled home tennis opener against Archbishop Thomas Murphy doubtful, as well.

Wolf soccer players, being of a hardy constitution, will play on, however.

Saturday marked the opening of the spring sports season, as Coupeville High School hosted a four-team soccer jamboree.

4A Lake Stevens, Island rival South Whidbey and Cavelero all sent teams as all involved played two 20-minute JV games and two 20-minute varsity games.

On hand to document the day was ace photographer Janine Bundy, who was nice enough to let us use her pics.

"We are ... COUPEVILLE!!"

“We are … COUPEVILLE!!”

Jeremy Copenhaver is the first star of the spring.

The Coupeville High School sophomore netted a beautiful goal off of a throw-in by Josh Wilsey Saturday, lifting the Wolf boys’ soccer squad to a 1-1 tie against arch-rival South Whidbey in the first of two 20-minute games during a season-opening jamboree.

Coupeville returned to the field and fought to an equally impressive scoreless draw with 4A Lake Stevens, marking an auspicious debut for the 1A Wolves.

“It was a good day for us, playing against two quality teams,” said Coupeville coach Paul Mendes. “The experience served to give us an idea of our current level.”

Playing their Island compatriots, the Wolves fell behind early when the Falcons slipped a pass through the Coupeville defense, setting up a one-on-one with the goalie.

Copenhaver brought the Wolves back, however, finding the back of the net with five minutes to play.

Jeremy found himself wide open in their goal mouth,” Mendes said. “He calmly settled the pass on his first touch, picked a corner and put it in their net for our first goal of the 2013 season.”

With two draws against top-level teams, Mendes came away satisfied with where his team is at the moment.

“A number of our boys got their first varsity minutes, and our returners showed they have stepped up their game from last year,” Mendes said. “Luke Pelant and Josh led our defense, which was tested numerous times, and our midfield leaders, Nathan Lamb and Sean Donley, linked up well with Jeremy to create scoring opportunities.”

Kole Kellison played in net for Coupeville and “held up well on our first test.”
