Quality theater on Whidbey? Believe the rumors.

Elizabeth Herbert

Elizabeth Herbert is a busy bee.

Bouncing from production to production, the prodigiously-talented South Whidbey resident could be referred to as an actress/writer/director/acting coach, but that would miss out on about 23 other jobs she’s had in the worlds of theater and TV.

After directing City of Angels at the Whidbey Island Center for the Arts in 2014, Herbert spent a year working on a show in Las Vegas.

Between then and now, she penned a full-length comedy which became a finalist in a New York competition and worked with daughter Chelsea Randall on a children’s TV show.

Herbert worked as an acting coach on the pirate-themed musical The Adventures of Captain Callie, which Randall created and wrote for WhidbeyTV.

In the near future, Herbert plans to direct a pair of one-act plays, teach summer acting classes and mount a production of To Kill a Mockingbird at the Driftwood Playhouse in Edmonds.

Oh, and she’s also currently writing a sitcom.

Somehow, in the middle of the hurricane, Herbert has carved out time to direct the Neil Simon farce Rumors, which runs at WICA Mar. 31-Apr. 15.

The play, which ran 535 performances on Broadway in the late ’80s, winning a Tony for Christine Baranski, is set at an anniversary dinner party.

Things quickly fall apart as gunshots, a car accident and much verbal back-stabbing replace dinner as everyone’s focus.

Herbert has long wanted to bring the play to vibrant life.

“I proposed Rumors to WICA a few years ago, before we entered the surreal world in which we are currently living,” Herbert said. “It was a funny play written by a favorite playwright of mine, Neil Simon; it was also a farce, which I love to direct.”

Farce uses an emphasis on characters taking themselves over seriously, intensified body energy and big/wild characterizations, which makes it even more appropriate in the cracked world we currently inhabit.

“Timing is everything,” Herbert said. “Now you can see how RELEVANT this silly, funny play has become.”

The cast for the production includes:

Brian Burroughs
Jim Carroll
Gail Liston
David Mayer
Christina Parker
Megan Parker
Nicole Parnell
Brian Plebanek
Kathy Stanley
Ken Stephens

Skyy Lippo

Skyy Lippo

Skyy Lippo continues to soar in the dance world.

The Coupeville High School sophomore, twin sister of Wolf three-sport star Joey Lippo, was recently named a ballet company captain with the Whidbey Island Dance Theatre.

She is believed to be the youngest dancer ever named a captain.

The honor traditionally goes to a ballet dancer who is a junior or senior in high school, but this time around theater directors were more concerned with leadership skills than scanning birth certificates.

“They were not looking at age; they were looking for someone who could really connect with the girls and work well with the staff,” said mom Connie Lippo.

Char Brown, the artistic director, described her as compassionate and takes time to notice each of the others,” she added.

Skyy Lippo has danced since she was five.

The Wolves will be dancing in Falcon territory this weekend.

Coupeville High School freshman Skyy Lippo will be one of the dancers displaying their stellar ballet moves when the Whidbey Island Dance Theatre presents its rendition of “Giselle.

Giselle is a romantic ballet first performed by the Ballet du Théâtre de l’Académie Royale de Musique at the Salle Le Peletier in Paris in 1841.

It tells the tale of a peasant girl who dies of a broken heart after discovering her lover is gettin’ hitched to someone else.

The cad…

The Wilis, a group of supernatural women who dance men to death, bring Giselle back from her grave with the intention of taking out her former crush.

Spoiler: the plan fails and love wins the day.

Performances are April 24-26 at South Whidbey High School’s Performing Arts Center (5675 Maxwelton Rd in Langley), with showtimes 7 PM Friday, 2 and 7 Saturday and 2 Sunday.

Tickets, which are $15, can be bought at the door or online at http://www.widtonline.org/.

“Oh, you need 10 practices before you can play in your first game? That’s cute.”

Ballet dancers like CHS’ own Sylvia Hurlburt and Skyylynn Lippo can probably do your practice without breaking a sweat.

They have been in full speed rehearsal since September for Whidbey Island Dance Theatre’s 22nd annual production of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker.

This is where the whole island comes together for eight shows over two weeks, not counting the rehearsals.

“There were no cuts from your team? Everyone made it? That’s cute.”

Approximately 75 dancers showed up to audition for parts in the performance, and fully three quarters of those were sent home.

Dancers learn to handle rejection at a very early age. It’s a tough gig, and everyone knows it.

Except at the end, there is no trophy, no MVP, no varsity letter.

Just accolades, flowers, and if you’re really lucky, a standing ovation.

“Tape it and give me a Motrin, I’m going back out in 60 seconds.”

How many other sports require you to finish one piece, exit the stage, change an extremely elaborate costume, and get back on stage in under a minute?

Here’s a hint: NONE.

And if you can’t do that with a smile on your face, there is always another dancer that knows your part cold. They are waiting for the chance to show the director that they are better than you.

This is not the kiddie version of the Nutcracker, this is the one that can compete with any other show.

The show starts on December 12th, and closes on the 21st. All shows are on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with two shows on Saturday.

drama1Sneaky. Very, very sneaky.

Right here in the middle of your daily sports report, a little drama thrown in for good measure. Who would have seen that coming?!?!

But I give in fairly easy to a little pressure from the Drama Mafia, it seems, so here’s a couple of words about the upcoming Coupeville High School production of “Christmas Belles.”

Now, I could point out it’s playing in November and maybe they’re jumping the gun a bit on the season. Or I can be smart and just promote the sucker.

It’s a Southern farce about squabbling sisters, family secrets, a surly Santa, a vengeful sheep and a reluctant Elvis impersonator.

I like the sounds of this already…
