Spring softball in the wind tunnel that is Coupeville is just as brutal as spring baseball.

There may come a time (say, late August) when conditions on the prairie are suited for sports. March 19, 2013 was not that day.

For other happier softball photos, check out ace photographer John Fisken’s work at http://www.cascadeathletics.com/index.php?act=view_gallery&gallery=3915&league=2&page=1&page_name=photo_store&school=24&sport=0&tab=2.

For every player, there is a fan. For every fan, there is a sign.

That is the mantra in Coupeville, especially when it comes to school sports.

From Wolves Amanda Fabrizi and Emilee Crichton waving signs for each other during volleyball and basketball season, to CEO of Student Shenanigans Danny Savalza and Co. showing love for South Whidbey star-in-exile Hayley Newman during the basketball playoffs to big sisters sporting love for their younger siblings at Wednesday’s middle school basketball games, it’s a movement.

A really nice one at that.

fans3fans4fans2fans1I know, hard to believe.

Anyway, as we sit here, just 10 days from the first day of spring sports practice (Monday, Feb. 25), I was going through photos ace camera-clicker Shelli Trumbull captured last season.

Then, lo and behold, I stumbled across a gold mine of cute lil’ kid pics snapped during the softball season.

Being shameless, and needing to fill some space during the slow stretch between seasons, I grabbed some of the best for you.

Let the page hits fall down like rain…

Livin' like McConaughey.

Livin’ like McConaughey.

Go not in anger.

Let the sadness and disgust with the refs wash away.

End your night (or start your morning) with the story, the glory of Wolf Nation as told by Shelli Trumbull’s camera.

Learn the lessons that are offered in each photo.

And then, in the words of Matthew McConaughey, “JKL, man. Just keep livin’.”

Alright, alright, alright.

Now, it’s true, the South Whidbey High School girls’ basketball team won Wednesday night.

The Falcons played with grit and pluck and led by Madi Boyd and Annalies Schuster, they eliminated Coupeville from the playoffs fair and square. We don’t have to be happy about it over here in Wolf Nation, but we can acknowledge the Falcons accomplishment and wish them well against Blaine on Friday.

Go up to the Canadian border and win one for Whidbey!

But, you can’t ignore the fact our fans were better than yours Wednesday.

Even on the road, even with your AD frowning on our fun-lovin’ shenanigans a bit in the fourth quarter, our student section completely overwhelmed your student section.

And yes, I know, we’re coming back Thursday for a boys’ basketball playoff game, so, in a sense, this is a dare.

Bring your best. Try and get some moves, a few chants, some motion in your ocean.

Fair warning, however — you’ve got your work cut out for you.

Danny Savalza and crew don’t bow down. Ever.
