Today is the birthday of the greatest quote machine known to man.

Well, at least he was until his wife, Shannon, made him stop giving quotes to the press.

Ladies and gentlemen, Whidbey paramedic, football/baseball coach and silver-tongued devil Chris Tumblin:

Josh had one tackle on a receiver, folded him in half like a cheap hooker who was punched in the gut by her pimp. He had to sit out for awhile and wait for his liver to start working again.”

Happy 46th, Mr. T.

Is there a bigger Hawk fan than former Coupeville Liquor Store owner Pam Smith (right)? No. No, there is not.

Is there a bigger Hawk fan than former Coupeville Liquor Store owner Pam Smith (in green gloves)? No. No, there is not.

Seattle Seahawk fans are a little worked up these days.

Give them one NFC West title and the National Football League’s best record, and all the die-hards in blue and green start screaming about their destiny and Super Bowl titles and whatnot.

As a lifelong Pittsburgh Steeler fan, it’s cute to see the Hawk fanatics get so worked up. Meanwhile, we’re over here polishing our record six Lombardi trophies (including one we “stole” from the Seahawks).

No, seriously … that’s all we’re doing, since the Steelers got off to a pathetic start and couldn’t quite ride a hot finish into the playoffs. And our quarterback is kind of a creep.

OK, maybe I will root for the Hawks this time around…

But I haven’t yet gotten to the level of commitment that the fans who stormed the Coupeville Wharf Sunday have. True believers, one and all, they have been in it for the whole ride.

Screw All-Conference. How about All-State?

With Coupeville High School players not being eligible for consideration when Cascade Conference coaches handed out awards (due to a limited league schedule), senior Wolf lineman Nick Streubel was overlooked at that level.

Every other level has recognized the impact of “The Big Hurt,” however, from the Everett Herald, when they handed out their All-Area team awards to the biggest of the biggies, announced Thursday.

Streubel was selected as a 1A Second-Team All-State offensive lineman by the Associated Press.

He was one of two 1A players from the 1A/2A Cascade Conference to be picked, with King’s offensive lineman Zach Jacobson also a Second-Team selection.

Taylor Comfort was the only 2A Cascade Conference player picked, as the Sultan linebacker was tabbed to the Second-Team.

It’s never too early to think about next season.

Coming off its biggest win total in four seasons, the Coupeville High School football squad has already named captains for 2014.

Three linemen and an explosive two-way star will lead the Wolves through the off-season and into a new school year.

Aaron Wright has prior time as a captain, while fellow linemen Carson Risner and Oscar Liquidano and wing/quarterback/heat-seeking missile Josh Bayne will be taking the lead for the first time.

All four will be seniors next season.

“They will do a fine job for us,” said CHS head coach Tony Maggio.

The awards keep rolling in for The Big Hurt.

A day after being named to the Everett Herald’s All-Area football team for his play on the offensive line, Coupeville High School senior Nick Streubel doubled his pleasure when the defense was honored.

He was one of two Cascade Conference players selected to the First Team, joining Sultan senior middle linebacker Taylor Comfort.

Streubel, who was routinely triple-teamed at nose guard, led 1A players with 10 sacks and collected 76 tackles in eight games this season.

Paced by its two-way leader, Coupeville went 4-5 (4-4 with Streubel in the lineup), its most wins in four seasons.

Mac McLachlan, a senior linebacker from 4A Edmonds-Woodway, was picked as the defensive player of the year.
