Streubel, Tumblin rumble with the big boys!!

Coupeville High School football is getting noticed.

As recruiting interest in both steadily picks up, Wolf juniors Nick “The Big Hurt” Streubel and Jake “Born to Run” Tumblin wowed folks at the Barton/NEI combine in Bellingham Sunday.

Six-foot-four lineman Streubel weighed in at a muscular 299 pounds, while retaining the nimble feet honed by his early days as a competitive swimmer. Tumblin is rumored to have run so fast, he broke the stopwatches in use.

Only 116 days until the first game of their season season kicks off.

The Big Hurt is becoming a wanted man.

As Nick Streubel enters the final weeks of his junior year at Coupeville High School, the 6-foot-4, 290-pound offensive lineman is drawing sustained interest from NCAA Division 1 football programs.

First it was a visit to the University of Washington, where he met with Husky coaches and watched a practice.

Thursday, it was an informal in-person visit from University of Wyoming assistant coach Nick Danielson, who stopped on Whidbey Island while out on the recruiting trail.

“I am so excited for that young man!,” Wolf football coach Tony Maggio said. “That would be a HUGE pickup for Wyoming.”

Streubel came away happy with the meeting, saying “It went well! Coach Maggio is extremely excited for what can happen down the road.”

Wyoming plays in the high-profile Mountain West Conference, which is expanding to 12 teams this fall with the addition of San Jose State and Utah State.

Boise State, the little school with the bright blue field that shocked the nation and became a Top 25 powerhouse, heads up the conference.

Korzan says no to football, yes to new adventures!!

Things are changing for Korbin Korzan.

When he returns to Coupeville High School in the fall for his junior year, Korzan will be a world-traveler and a former football player.

After playing linebacker and seeing some action at quarterback for the Wolves, he’s decided it’s time to leave the gridiron behind.

Drawing his attention first is a trip to Belgium, where he’ll be joining girlfriend Iris Ryckaert when she returns to her native country after a year on Whidbey Island as a foreign exchange student.

Since the trip will be in August and September, Korzan would miss a key chunk of time as Coupeville preps for a new season.

“It is truth. I will miss a lot of valuable camps, practices, and other football-related events, that when I come back I will be too far behind to play and would miss a lot of games due to the “10 practices before you play” rule,” Korzan said. “No more football for me.”

Instead, he’s considering picking up two other sports to go along with his eternal love, baseball.

He may replace football with tennis (“I really enjoy playing it”), where he could see court time with fellow baseball vets like Aaron Curtin, Ben Etzell, Brian Norris and Kyle Bodamer.

He also plans to pursue a chance to bowl with the Oak Harbor High School team.

Rumble young man, Rumble (all the way to the NFL)!!

Oak Harbor, Coupeville … it’s all the same.

Well, maybe not, but everyone on Whidbey Island can be thrilled with the news that former Wildcat great Rodrick Rumble is getting his shot at the National Football League.

The man who helped carry Oak Harbor to a 4A state title before going on to star at Idaho State, signed as an undrafted free agent with the Indianapolis Colts Saturday and will compete for a spot at wide receiver.

The Colts, with last year’s #1 pick at QB in Andrew Luck, have four nationally televised games on next year’s schedule, and host the Seahawks Oct. 6. They roll out Reggie Wayne and Darrius Heyward-Bey at starter, but the battle for roster spots after them is wide open.

Why not the six-foot-two, silky-smooth Rumble?

Football players, be all you can be!!

“We’re leaving town at 6:30 AM sharp on the 15th?!?! Whose idea was that? Mine? Oh … OK.”

Start mowing lawns!

Or do whatever it is that kids do these days to get money.

Coupeville High School football coaches are trying to encourage as many players as possible to attend a team camp at Central Washington University June 15-18.

Cost of the camp is $295 per camper, with money due by June 1. The fee includes all lodging and meals.

This is a full-gear camp aimed at high school players, and coaches and parents will drive players to Ellensburg. No players will be allowed to drive.
