Coupeville 3, Orcas Island 0.

Basketballs were flying around the CHS and CMS gyms Saturday, and, if the balls were launched by Wolves, they were going in the bucket. If the visiting Vikings released the jump shot, however, chances were the ball was hitting nothing but rim, or air.

The Wolf varsity girls, varsity boys and JV boys all romped to wins for the first clean sweep of the season. The only thing keeping it from being a 4-for-4 day was the fact Orcas didn’t have a JV girls team to show up and be beaten.

Skipping back and forth between gyms was traveling photographer John Fisken, who snapped the pics above.

David King was smiling after this one.

The Coupeville High School girls’ basketball coach had just collected his fourth win in a row, a 50-44 drubbing of visiting Orcas Island Saturday that lifted the Wolves to a crisp 5-2 on the season.

But it was more than that. It was how the game was won.

Playing less than 24 hours after fighting off La Conner — a game in which Coupeville was coming off a 17-day break — the Wolves attacked, time and again.

And then, at the end, they pulled back and worked the clock like pros, draining time off and never allowing the Vikings a chance to mount a comeback.

“It was nice that they slowed it down (at the end),” King said. “This was a good test for us, playing back to back. Both physical and mentally.

“At times we struggled with mental fatigue,” he added. “The great thing is we fought through that fatigue and got defensive stops when we needed to.”

Coupeville came out on fire, with super sophomore Makana Stone slicing through the Orcas defense for 10 first-quarter points.

The Vikings staged a mini-rally with a pair of three-point bombs, then Wolf senior Breeanna Messner, the steadiest of steady players, took the ball in her hands and slapped the Vikings down.

First Messner buried her own trey, but got extra artistic points for angling it in off the backboard.

Then she exploded upwards through two bigger Orcas players, yanked down a rebound and immediately took it back up for a hard-earned bucket.

“Earlier in the week we focused on weak-side offensive rebounds and this showed up tonight with Bree and Makana leading the way,” King said. “The rest of the team followed suit, which put pressure on Orcas.”

Just as Orcas thought they knew who to guard, Coupeville added a new wrinkle, with spark-plug Madeline Strasburg throwing down a burst of vintage Maddie Big Time.

Strasburg banged home a jumper from the top of the key, then picked the pocket of a Viking ballhander on consecutive plays, turning both loose balls into breakaway layins.

Orcas made one last push early in the third, riding a string of free throws to claim a 28-27 lead.

Re-enter the wham-bam duo of Stone and Strasburg, with a little help from Hailey Hammer inside, Amanda Fabrizi outside (a nifty three-pointer from really long range) and Julia Myers everywhere.

Game over, man, game over.

The defining play of the game may have come in the fourth, when Messner went airborne and, just short of throwing out her back, managed to redirect a loose ball back to Myers a second before it would have been out of bounds.

With the ball in her hands, the Wolf junior calmly lobbed in a pull-up jumper, then sprinted back to play defense, a small smile gracing her lips as the shoulders of the Orcas players sagged.

Coupeville, which now returns to Cascade Conference play with a game at Sultan (2-6) Tuesday, was paced by Stone (19) and Strasburg (13).

Messner banked home six, Hammer and Myers netted four apiece, Fabrizi had her trey and Wynter Thorne swished a pressure-packed fourth-quarter free throw that loomed large.

McKayla Bailey just about ripped the head off an Orcas player in a scramble for a loose ball, Monica Vidoni gave assistance on the boards and Kacie Kiel, out for a second game with an injury, was a vocal cheerleader from her post on the bench.

Basketball be back.

After 17 long days of wandering through a no-sports wasteland, Coupeville rediscovered its hoops hotshots Friday night, as CHS split a doubleheader with visiting La Conner.

The Wolf boys lost a heart-breaker on the final play of the game, the Wolf girls romped to a wire-to-wire win and John Fisken was there to capture it all.

Valen

The long winter break couldn’t cool off Carlie Rosenkrance’s red-hot shooting touch.

Bouncing back strongly after a 17-day gap between games, the Coupeville High School freshman singed the nets for a team-high 13 points in Friday night’s girls JV basketball game.

Unfortunately, visiting La Conner got hot themselves, banging home a string of three-point bombs late in the game to eke out a 39-31 non-conference victory.

Now 2-3, the Wolf JV will sit out today (as Orcas Island doesn’t have a JV squad), before jumping back into Cascade Conference play Tuesday at Sultan.

Facing off with a scrappy Brave team fond of long range jumpers, Coupeville came out strong. With Rosenkrance pouring in six quick points, the starting five were ready to rumble.

“Our starting group played pretty aggressive defense, with Lauren (Grove) really using her quickness against their ball handler,” said Coupeville coach Amy King. “Emily (Coulter) moved well and helped her teammates with a lot of communication.”

Trailing by four at the half, the Wolves turned things around with their strongest quarter, outscoring La Conner 11-5 in the third.

Sophia Jebrail and Tiffany Briscoe each banged home a pair of buckets, while a ramped-up defense resulted in quick scoring opportunities for Coupeville.

The fourth quarter was an old-fashioned toe-to-toe slugfest, as the squads traded leads down the stretch. La Conner finally snatched victory away when it began to rain down treys, nailing three from long range in a very short span.

Despite the long gap between games, the Wolves showed little rust, something King was pleased to see.

“We came in with a lot of energy, all 13 girls contributing,” she said. “We are scoring a lot of points and some girls are great at getting aggressive on defense in spurts.

“Our focus moving into the rest of this season has to be getting the entire team on the same page with being more aggressive with defense, working together on the press and being stronger with the ball on offense,” King added. “Once we accomplish these things, we will win and be very hard to stop.”

Rosenkrance topped the scoring parade with her 13, while Briscoe (5), Jebrail (4), McKayla Bailey (4), Monica Vidoni (2), Wynter Thorne (2) and Coulter (1) all chipped in to the effort.

This worked out nicely.

Whidbey Island’s one (partial) day of snow cost the Coupeville High School basketball squads a planned trip to Orcas Island Dec. 20.

Instead, it gained both of them an extra home game.

With the two schools scrambling to find a way to get in the planned non-league doubleheader, the decision was made to move the event to today (Saturday, Jan. 4,) but with the games now in the CHS gym.

The Wolf girls (4-2), coming off an impressive take-down of a previously highly-regarded La Conner team Friday night, tip off at 3:30 PM this afternoon.

The Coupeville JV boys play across the hallway in the middle school gym at the same time, with the Wolf varsity boys (0-6) tipping off in the main gym after the girls game ends (approximate tip-time is 5 PM).

There will be no girls JV game, as Orcas doesn’t have a second girls team.
