Amanda Fabrizi, trying to ignore the awe-inspiring glory

Amanda Fabrizi waits to trigger a play in her team’s thumping of arch-rival South Whidbey.

They are the pride of the Island.

Seriously. There’s no contest, whatsoever.

If you take a look at hoops on Whidbey Island so far in the 2013-2014 season, there is one good team and five whose records make you say “yikes.”

The Coupeville High School girls’ basketball squad, with balanced scoring and a ball-hawking defense, is 3-2 and perched in a tie with Archbishop Thomas Murphy for second place in the Cascade Conference at 2-1.

The other five varsity squads — the Coupeville boys, Oak Harbor boys and girls and South Whidbey boys and girls, are a combined 2-27.

And one of those wins came locally, as the Falcon boys nipped the Wolf boys in an inter-Island duel.

Already this season the Oak Harbor girls have lost 75-16 and the South Whidbey girls were stomped 55-4.

But then there are the Wolf girls, with a dominating win over 2A Lakewood and slap-downs to Meridian and South Whidbey.

They had a very close loss to Cedar Park Christian and have only stumbled badly once, when they ran into a brick wall in highly-ranked 2A power Cedarcrest.

With all six Island teams on hiatus right now for winter break, there’s the hope they will find that missing key to success during a stretch of practices. That they will come roaring back in the new year and make a trip to Whidbey something other schools dread.

But for now, there’s only one local squad already there, in the winning groove.

They wear red and black, and while their roster may be dotted with cheerleaders, they are tough to the core. They are Wolves and they are howlin’.

You built a snowman. Nice.

It doesn’t matter, because some Coupeville High School girls’ basketball players (and their support crew) just kicked your snow-covered fanny and the snow-covered fanny of everyone else on the Island.

Behold, the Snow Trooper.

Game, set, match, Stone family.

Apparently big yellow school buses can’t drive through a few snow flakes.

After seeing the pavement assaulted by a smattering of the white stuff Friday morning, Coupeville High School postponed a planned trip to Orcas Island for a basketball doubleheader.

The games, which would have been the final ones for the Wolf girls (3-2) and boys (0-5) before a two-week holiday break, will be rescheduled.

The next scheduled game for both CHS teams is Friday, Jan. 3, when La Conner comes to the Island for a doubleheader.

Hopefully the snow will be gone before then.

Wait, what, it’s almost gone now, you say?

Basketball is a game of moments.

Some are big, like one player swooping in to rip a rebound away from an opponent. Others are small, at first, such as a player waiting a split second for a teammate to break free before triggering a pass.

All are important, and all make for great photos.

The pics above are courtesy John Fisken and come from Tuesday night’s Coupeville vs. South Whidbey doubleheader slugfest, in which the Wolf girls and the Falcon boys came out on top.

Wynter Thorne (John Fisken photo)

The night was cold, but Wynter Thorne was on fire.

Pulling double duty after seeing some floor time in the varsity game, the Coupeville High School junior crossed the hallway to the other gym and lit up the scoreboard in the JV girls’ basketball game Tuesday night.

Unfortunately, not even her game-high 14 point outburst was enough, as the Wolves were nipped 28-24 by visiting South Whidbey.

The loss dropped the JV squad to 2-2 overall, 2-1 in conference play.

Looking for a little revenge after getting blown out in the varsity game, the Falcons loaded up their roster for the second game and came out aggressively. Unlike the varsity contest, this time some of the Wolves took a step back.

“South Whidbey was going for everything and not giving room for error on passing and ball handling,” said Coupeville coach Amy King. “If we would get a little more aggressive on defense, we could have done the same back.

“We have some girls step up and get aggressive, but others are way more passive and we are working on getting them to put a little more fire in their eye and gut,” she added. “We need to be aggressive on the floor and we need to be consistent with that aggressiveness.”

Being aggressive is a trademark for Thorne, and she consistently delivered in the time she could be on the floor.

“Most of Wynter’s baskets were off of reading their passes and stealing the ball, then driving up the floor for the lay up,” King said. “I feel this was her best game as far as stepping up, being a threat both offensively and defensively, being a leader on the floor and putting every ounce of energy she had into the three quarters she was able to play.”

Thorne was an equal opportunity threat, draining five buckets from the field and a perfect four-of-four from the charity stripe.

Carlie Rosenkrance backed her with four points, while Lauren Grove, Monica Vidoni and Skyler Lawrence all chipped in with a bucket.

Lawrence and Tiffany Briscoe had “picture-perfect rebounds, including blocking out, and great outlet passes” while Sophia Jebrail “played strongly and Erin Josue “played outstanding defense.”

“Everybody contributed in some aspect – whether it was fly-around defense, rebounding, taking a shot, talking on the court or talking from the bench,” King said. “We are a strong team. We just need more consistency with how we play every time we step foot on the court.”
