Mark August 6 on your calendar, cause that’s the day we blow up the Whidbey News-Times’ contest.

Coupevillesports.com readers have already taken down several online voting contests before, with the high point being when we slapped ATM (and their maids and butlers) silly in an Everett Herald contest to pick which football team was the best in the Cascade Conference.

Wolf Nation takes great delight in kickin’ your pampered fanny.

But now we turn our sights on the Canadian-funded rag’s Oh Baby, Baby Cutest Baby Photo Contest.

Submissions are being rounded up through Monday, Aug. 15 at 11:59 AM. At noon that day (and for the next two weeks) votes are tallied and one baby will rise to claim the title, “Highlander”-style.

That baby should be Gracen Joiner, the offspring of former Wolf mega-star Tina (Lyness) Joiner, the beast of the basketball hardwood, and Jason Joiner, a pretty good CHS football player who has to accept he’s the second-best athlete in his house.

So, prime your voting finger, mark Aug. 6 on the calendar, bask in the cuteness that is young Mr. Gracen and prepare to unleash holy hell on the Canucks. It’s the right thing to do.

The Wolves are on the prowl.

Led by seniors Breeanna Messner and Amanda Fabrizi, a large group of Coupeville High School girls’ basketball players have been showing up for open gyms on a regular basis this summer.

With numbers consistently in double digits, that has allowed the Wolves to work on numerous aspects of their game, while also giving them enough bodies to go full-force when they scrimmage.

“We are working hard and getting some incoming freshmen in the gym with many returning players,” said CHS coach David King. “The turnout has been great and shows to us as coaches that these girls want to get better individually, as well as as a team.”

Among the players who have participated have been Messner and Fabrizi, juniors Hailey Hammer, Monica Vidoni, McKayla Bailey, Kacie Kiel, Wynter Thorne and Julia Myers, sophomores Makana Stone, Miranda Engle and McKenzie Bailey and freshmen Tiffany Briscoe, Carlie Rosenkrance, Valen Trujillo and Mattea Miller.

Also along for the ride have been the beasts of the junior high set, rising stars Mia and Kalia Littlejohn.

CHS will host six more open gyms through the end of July and King encourages returning players and incoming freshman to show up.

Then clamps down defensively on the hardcourt.

Then clamps down defensively on the hardcourt.

It’s a busy summer for Aaron Curtin.

The Coupeville High School junior is one of four Wolves who are doing double duty, playing American Legion baseball, then swapping uniforms and playing hoops with their CHS teammates in a summer league.

Senior Morgan Payne, junior Aaron Trumbull and sophomore Cole Payne are the other three guys pulling double duty, while fellow Wolves Kurtis Smith and Ben Etzell are sticking to the diamond.

On the softball field, Hailey Hammer, Madeline Roberts, Madeline Strasburg and McKayla Bailey are busy being awesome, while a group of Wolves led by seniors Breeanna Messner and Amanda Fabrizi recently went to a basketball camp.

Toss in the CHS football, volleyball and cheer squads, which have already had practices, while individual players such as senior gridiron giants Nick Streubel and Jake Tumblin are bouncing from camp to camp, and there seems to be a Wolf playing somewhere every day.

Regardless of the sport, Coupeville’s best are fine-tuning their games, using the off-season to hone their skills as we head towards the 2013-2014 school year.

Let the anticipation build.

They shoot, they score … they run over each other with boats.

During their trip to a basketball camp in Ocean Shores a few weeks back, members of the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball team filled in their down time with various beach and water-related diversions.

One of the more popular ones was when they got the chance to pilot bumper car boats and try to blow off a bit of steam by whacking each other repeatedly.

At the time, we ran a photo or two of the watery adventure, but here are more Amy King photos for your weekend viewing pleasure.

You’re welcome.

Elaina Kiel and her daughters, Kacie (left) and Katie.

I am crying as I write this.

They are happy tears, though. Tears of joy at seeing one of Coupeville’s best coming through the fire and being there for her girls.

When volleyball season kicks into action this fall, Elaina Kiel will be there in the stands, quietly cheering for youngest daughter Kacie just as she did last year for both Kacie and older sister Katie.

Meanwhile, wild man dad Steve Kiel will be taking on the entire visiting fan section by himself, outshouting all of Sultan with his booming baritone voice, but that’s another story.

Mrs. Kiel just finished her radiation treatment and is kicking cancer’s fanny. One of the strongest, classiest women in Wolf Nation fights on, lives on, grows stronger and more radiant with each day.

It is a good day. It is a happy day. It is a just day.
