And the court belongs to the girls.

Kicking off their moment in the sports spotlight, the Coupeville Middle School girls’ basketball squads opened their eight-game season Monday with a tussle in Langley. And, while some relatively inexperienced Wolf squads came out on the losing end, lessons were learned that will hopefully pay off in the future.

The 7th grade JV scrapped with their hosts, with Hope Lodell and Brittany Sass-Powers standing out, said Wolf coach Sarah Stuurmans. Their hustle earned them additional minutes in the 8th grade JV game, as well.

“They played really hard on defense and got a lot of fast break opportunities,” Stuurmans said. “Overall, a good day. We learned a lot.”

The 7th grade varsity fell 28-18 in a game where Mia Littlejohn made her presence felt. She poured in a team-high six points while running much of the team’s offense.

“Mia was just a leader, bringing the ball up the floor and had some great drives and assists,” Stuurmans said. “They played like a team and communicated very well. I had a lot of fun with this group today!”

Sage Renninger sparkled for Coupeville on defense, shutting down Langley’s leading scorer, while she and Katrina McGranahan paced the CMS squad on the boards.

Lauren Rose tossed in three points, while Payton Aparicio, Kyla Briscoe and Renninger each chipped in with a bucket.

P.S. — The CMS 8th grade squads did not report results, so the first person to see coach Brett Smedley should give him a hard time.

P.P.S. — The home games against Granite Falls originally scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 13 have been bumped back a week and will be played on the 20th. Tip-off is 3 PM.

Where would the world be without the photo bomb?

It would be a duller, grayer place if every so often you weren’t looking at photos and suddenly noticed that one person in the background doing something completely different from everyone else.

It’s the little cherry on the top of the photographic sundae.

So, as we creep into a Monday, let’s look back at a few of the best captured by ace photog Shelli Trumbull.

P.S. — Click on each photo to enlarge them and bask in the full awesomness.

How do you build basketball success?

One kid at a time, one hoop at a time, one day at a time.

You get the high school stars to give back, their time and their skills, and you build the small moments when a young child looks up at them and says, “That’s what I want to be. Right there.”

Because, years from now, that small child is the high school star, and he or she gives back their time and their skills and a town’s heritage of basketball excellence rolls on.

bb1pb2c1webbb5pb3c3pb4Jenn Dohner is a rock star camerawomen. Literally.

From Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam on down to obscure indie bands, Dohner, aka Island Jenn, has shot rock stars in their native environments for years. Her pictures win awards, make her money and caress the eyeballs.

And now, on a whim, she’s shot some good old fashioned high school sports. Or, at least she did during Senior Night for the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball and winter cheer squads.

The pics above, which capture basketball players, cheerleaders and pep band members, are hers. If you like (and why wouldn’t you?) check out her other stuff at http://islandjenn.com/.

Tell ’em Dave sent you.

Alright, alright, alright.
