Jim and Suzanne Copenhaver

Are you a Coupeville High School soccer player, present or past?

Or a parent, a coach, a fan, a youth player or a soccer addict who wants to display a final show of support for Dr. Jim Copenhaver, longtime local coach, before he and his family leave Whidbey Island?

Then get your rear to the bleachers at Mickey Clark Field Thursday, May 16 by 5 PM sharp and be part of a farewell photo for the ol’ ball coach. If at all possible, wear your soccer jersey.

Copenhaver, who has donated countless hours to local soccer programs over the years, is moving to New Hampshire with his wife Suzanne and their children to be closer to family.

Vienna’s gain is Coupeville’s loss.

The Wolf girls’ soccer team will be looking for a new head coach after Dan d’Almeida and wife Cathy accepted a two-year teaching assignment at the Amadeus International School in Austria.

It’s an English-speaking international boarding school that has a lofty academic reputation with a strong emphasis on musical training. The school is affiliated with both the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna Boys Choir.

d’Almeida coached the CHS girls for a season, replacing Mike Thornton, and is also an assistant for the Wolf boys’ squad. His son Dawson, a freshman who saw some varsity action this season, will be moving with his parents.

Older sister Amanda, who starred for the Wolf booters for four seasons, recently decided she would attend Carleton College in Minnesota.

Thanks to the wonders of the internet, her family will be able to watch her soccer games from afar, as the school streams their home contests.

She’s going to Minnesota.

Coupeville High School senior Amanda d’Almeida, a standout soccer and tennis player who has combined athletic success with academic excellence, has signed to play college ball at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota.

The Knights, who have repeat appearances in the NCAA tournament to their credit, are coached by Jocelyn Keller, who was a successful player at DePauw University.

d’Almeida received a $10,000 merit scholarship and “a very strong overall package,” said dad Dan d’Almeida.

Out of the numerous universities that recruited the standout scorer, she narrowed her final choices down to Carleton, Haverford, Whitman, CMS (Claremont-McKenna, Harvey Mudd, Scripps) and Willamette.

Pre-season camp begins August 17th for d’Almeida and her new teammates.

Her dad, who doubles as the girls’ soccer coach at CHS, hopes other Wolf athletes will take his daughter’s success as a reason to keep themselves equally dedicated, both on the playing field and in the classroom.

“I want to encourage athletes to be as great in the classroom as they are on the field or court in order to make affordable college possible,” he said. “Absolute dedication to a dream and hard work (off-Island year-round select soccer) pays off.

“Not always something that our kids want to hear, but often the ‘true’ story behind successful athletes.”

The very successful GU-17 Whidbey Islanders select soccer team included girls from all three Island high schools.

The successful GU-17 Whidbey Islanders select team included girls from all three Island high schools.

North, South or Central, soccer unites all of Whidbey.

Or, at least it will during the two-month Girls U15-U18 All-Island Intramural League, which will allow players from all three Island zones to honor the words of The Beatles and “come together.”

The league, which costs $25, will offer players a chance to improve and maintain their soccer skills during the down time between select soccer seasons.

The action will alternate every Saturday between Fort Nugent and the South Whidbey Sports Complex from April 6 to June 1. Players will do a warm-up, possibly a drill or two then choose up sides and play “pick-up” style, with no uniforms or referees.

There are no weekday practices, but all players must be registered. For more info or to register go to https://swysc.com/groups/06-rec-spring-2013-girls-u15-u18-all-island-intramural-league/.
