It’s official.

Caleb Valko is a popular man these days.

He remains the Page Hit King here at coupevillesports.com, where four stories featuring the Coupeville High School senior are among the ten most-read articles on the site. And now college football coaches are coming calling.

A day before his Homecoming game against Granite Falls, Valko has been offered the first step towards nabbing a football scholarship from Northwestern College, an NAIA gridiron power in Orange City, Iowa.

The Red Raiders, who are coached by Kyle Achterhoff, are currently 4-1 on the season and sit 11th in the most recent NAIA Top 25 rankings. Northwestern has a rich football history, having won national titles in 1973 and 1983. They have qualified for the national playoffs 15 times, reaching the quarterfinals as recently as 2006.

And the crowd goes crazy. “Wal-stad!! Wal-stad!!!” You should see them when they really get excited… (Shelli Trumbull photo)

So, you’re saying there’s a chance?

While she couldn’t totally commit to it, Coupeville High School volleyball coach Toni Crebbin believes star player Bessie Walstad stands a good chance of making her first on-court appearance in several games Thursday night. Walstad, who suffered a badly sprained ankle in a game earlier this season, has missed a chunk of games, but has been active on the sidelines, working as an unpaid, but vocal, assistant coach and team leader.

The Wolves have missed her thundering hits and on-court intangibles, going winless in her absence.

How much Walstad plays tonight against Lakewood, if she does, will depend on how the ankle feels at game-time, and how it holds up if she enters the heat of competition.

“She will not start tonight, but may find her way in the game,” Crebbin said. “Since she injured it playing front row, she is a bit hesitant about playing the front row, so I will most likely ease her into the back row.

“However, knowing Bessie, I’m guessing that in the midst of her game intensity she will forget all about any anxieties she may have and find herself going all out in no time,” she added. “At least that’s what I’m hoping.”

Courtney Arnold, on right, and co-captain Tyler Potts, during their days as Wolves.

Football fans will get a little somethin’ extra this Friday.

Inside sources (very hush-hush!!) tell me that former Wolf cheer captain Courtney Arnold, one of the best to ever scream her lungs out on a Friday night sideline, will be in town and back to bring her non-stop energy to this year’s squad.

Arnold, who is currently attending Azusu Pacific University in California, has been working with the current Wolf cheerleaders on a routine which they will debut during Coupeville’s clash with Orcas Island.

So, mark the date on the calender. Plan accordingly. But remember, you didn’t hear it from me.
