Madison Tisa McPhee and Chloe, her seriously sleep-deprived horse. You can tell by the glowing eyes.

A very happy Madison Tisa McPhee and Chloe, her seriously sleep-deprived horse. You can tell by the glowing eyes.

Everywhere Madison Tisa McPhee goes, awards follow.

The recent Coupeville High School grad, who hauled home multiple medals from this year’s state track meet, is back to kickin’ fanny and taking names with her horse, Chloe, on the barrel racing circuit.

Their most recent stop was the 5th annual Billy Eggleson Memorial Roping and Barrel Race at the Sedro Woolley Rodeo Grounds Saturday, June 22.

Competing in an event that didn’t kick off until 11 PM, and wound up somewhere just shy of 1:30 in the morning, Tisa McPhee won the youth class (for which she got a championship belt buckle — her first — and a prize check) and claimed fourth (and another check) in the open jackpot.

It’s presumed the other competitors cried themselves to sleep afterwards.

Ally Roberts

Ally Roberts

As spring volleyball practice kicks into high gear, we’ll be taking a look at a variety of players from Coupeville High School, with an emphasis on younger players and rising stars.

Ally Roberts is a busy young woman.

As befits one of the younger members of one of Coupeville’s top sports families — dad Jay, uncle Jon, aunt Sherry and grandfather Sandy all made big names for themselves as Wolves, while older Madeline is a CHS softball sensation — Ally plays multiple sports, and is talented at all of them.

A competitive horse rider, she’s juggling that with training for being a two-sport athlete when she becomes a freshman in the fall. She’ll join Madeline, a senior, on the Wolf cheer squad, while also playing volleyball.

“This will be my third year in volleyball,” Roberts said. “I started in seventh grade and I wanted to do a winter sport while I couldn’t ride my horse. I love to be active.”

While playing for Amy King’s Coupeville Middle School squad, Roberts was a setter. She enjoys the position, but would like to continue to expand her game.

“I love to be a setter,” Roberts said. “I think my strengths are probably setting and passing.

“I need to work on my overhand hitting and serving,” she added. “I hope that I can become a better hitter and I want to learn how to jump serve.”

A huge Macklemore fan (“Because he inspires me!!”), Roberts picks language arts and science as her favorite classes in school (“They really are a lot of fun”) and is grateful for the support and help of her family and teammates.

“My older sister has definitely helped me become a better cheerleader and she helps me when I have fallen,” Roberts said. “And I definitely think that I can and have already learned a lot from McKenzie Bailey and Haley Sherman.”

Ally Roberts is branching out.

An accomplished show rider, the Coupeville Middle School student convinced her horse, Tiger, to try gaming at this past weekend’s 4H Spring Show at the Island County Fairgrounds.

Competing in barrel racing, pole bending and flag events, the duo sparkled, winning Reserve Champion for Gaming Showmanship.

That was on top of the windfall of ribbons she collected in Performance Showmanship, where she was a Grand Champion in Showmanship and Trail and nabbed bronze medals in English and Western Medal classes.

Coming at the same time big sis Madeline was thumping a two-run, over-the-fence home run in a district high school softball playoff game, the weekend belong to the Roberts’ girls.

Athletic talent runs deep in the Roberts family.

When Coupeville Middle School eighth grader Ally Roberts looks around at a family reunion, there’s older sister Madeline Roberts, currently starring as a dangerous lead-off hitter for the Wolf softball team.

Uncle and aunt Jon and Sherry Roberts were both CHS Athlete of the Year winners, grandpa Sandy Roberts is a legendary local coach and dad Jay Roberts is the best Wolf athlete ever to decline my offer of writing a feature story about him.

But don’t worry about Ally. She’s doing pretty well herself these days.

A volleyball player who may also follow her older sister onto the Wolf cheer squad, Roberts is currently setting the horse world on fire.

Riding for the Blazing Saddles club through Island County 4H, she has been riding for seven years and is a state meet veteran, having placed 8th in Showmanship in 2012.

Riding at a competition Saturday, she hauled in seven medals (four Grand Champion and three Reserve Champion) and was anointed High Point Champion for the show.

“My show went fantastic!” Roberts said. “I was really excited and didn’t know what to expect and it went GREAT!”
