You can talk about drop shots and well-placed volleys and kick serves and reverse spin, but in the end, all the technical tennis talk is trumped by one thing — who are you wearing?

Why yes, it is another smorgasbord of sartorial choices, this time featuring the well-clad tootsies of the Coupeville High School boys’ tennis team, as photographed by John Fisken.

New season, new kicks.

No self-respecting soccer player would debut with a new team wearing last year’s shoes.

Baseball players, maybe. Football players, absolutely. But soccer players? It’s just not done.

Thus, Coupeville High School freshman Zane Bundy, who is starting up with the Northwest Nationals U-16 Red squad, had to go pick up a new pair of shoes before the gloss could come off his “old” ones.

For those who come to this site for fashion news (all three of you…), they’re the “Nike Mercurial Vapor IX FG.”

You’re welcome.

Now you know, and, not only is knowing half the battle, but it fully explains why mom Janine Bundy is probably both rolling her eyes and clutching her wallet at the moment.

Soccer stands alone.

Of all the male sports at Coupeville High School, it is the only one that goes its own way in terms of making a fashion statement.

While most Wolf teams wear the same uniform, from the top to the bottom, soccer lets its freak flag fly when it comes to what it wears down below.

Covering this breaking fashion trend, eagle-eyed photographer John Fisken … who will be shooting for a Benetton catalog next time you see him.

Having highlighted some of the various brightly-colored shoes worn by the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball varsity team, we sent high fashion photographer John Fisken back on the court to get some snaps of the sizzlin’ styles worn by the Wolf JV players.

Oh lord, has it really come to this? Am I this in love with hauling in page views?

Yes, yes I am.

How well do you know your basketball shoes?

Spend enough time at Coupeville High School basketball games this winter and you will notice a variety of colors squeaking along on the hardwood. Pink, red, blue, black, white, the whole color spectrum is on display.

What does it all mean?

I’ll be danged if I know. Maybe each color has something to do with the personality of the player, some deep hidden meaning. Or, maybe a shoe is just a shoe.

But let’s see how well you know your basketball shoes, at least as they pertain to the Wolves.

Look up above and try to guess which player goes with which shoes. And no peeking at the answers first!

And while you’re debating, the first three photos are by John Fisken. The fourth, which shows Coach V about to lace up a pair of shoes for a player, was shot by Shelli Trumbull.

OK, the answers:

A) Breeanna Messner

B) Amanda Fabrizi

C) Lauren Escalle

D) It doesn’t really matter. Virtually every single boys’ basketball player wears black shoes. Fashion has not reached the boys game yet, apparently.
