Water wizard makes waves at state

He beat the odds to make a big splash.

Finn Price is the lone swimmer at Coupeville High School, and there’s no pool in Cow Town.

That means the Wolf sophomore heads South six days a week, picks up a gaggle of Falcon water wizards, then hops on a ferry and completes the trek to Kamiak High School.

Once the postseason arrives, Price and his fellow Whidbey pool men head off their own way, with Coupeville’s splash king still punching above his weight class.

Though CHS is a 2B school, the lowest rung for swim is 1A/2A, and that’s where Price qualified for the state meet.

Friday, he hit the water at the King County Aquatic Center, powering to a 15th place finish (out of 20 competitors) in the 100 free, hitting the wall in 52.83 seconds.

Price wrapped his big city odyssey with an 11th place showing in the 200 free, finishing in 1:55.83, beating his seeding time in both events.

Wolves send dynamic duo to state

Make some noise.

Coupeville High School and Middle School will briefly dismiss classes Thursday so that students can give a send-off to state-bound athletes Finn Price and Jaje Drake.

Price, a Wolf sophomore, is headed to the King County Aquatic Center for the 2A swim championships, while Drake, a senior wrestler, is slated to appear at Mat Classic XXXV at the Tacoma Dome.

CHS/CMS students will be freed at 9:50 AM, with the state duo walking through the commons and on to the high school gym at approximately 10:00 AM.

Coupeville doesn’t have wrestling or swim programs of its own but has agreements with South Whidbey and Kamiak, respectively, allowing Wolf athletes to train and travel with those schools during the regular season.

Lone Wolf splashes to state meet

Cold or no cold, he’s off to the big swim.

Coupeville High School sophomore Finn Price, a one-man aquatic team, overcame poor health to qualify for the state swim meet in two events.

After training and traveling with Kamiak since CHS doesn’t have a pool program, the lone Wolf went his own way for the postseason.

Vying in multiple events at the district meet in Anacortes this past weekend, Coupeville’s water king overcame foes from bigger schools to advance.

Now Price, who reps a 2B school, will swim in the 100 and 200 free at the 2A state meet Feb. 15-17 at the King County Aquatic Center.

He’s seeded 11th in the 200 and 16th in the 100, an event where he’s not the only Finn in the water.

Squalicum’s Finn Smith, also a sophomore, is ranked 15th in that event.

Two Finns, one pool, let the water war begin.

Even sharks are afraid when Wolves are unleashed in the water.

Finn splashes to new glory

He’s not biding his time.

Two meets into a new swim season, Coupeville High School sophomore Finn Price has already qualified for districts in four events.

The lone Wolf in the water jumps across to the mainland to train and travel with Kamiak, and he’s scorching the competition.

As a freshman, he went to districts in the 100 free and 200 free, finishing 7th in the latter race.

This year Price has already hit qualifying times in both those events, as well as the 50 free and 100 breaststroke.

Since Coupeville, a 2B school, doesn’t have a swim program of its own, he joins up with Kamiak, a 4A school, for the regular season through a co-op agreement.

Price stays with the mainlanders through late January, then breaks free to travel his own path for the postseason.

Lone Wolf caps successful swim season

A successful year one, in the books.

Coupeville High School freshman Finn Price, a one-man Wolf aquatic team, capped his season this weekend with an appearance at the 2A Northwest District 1 meet in Anacortes.

Competing against swimmers from bigger schools, the Wolf frosh, who joins three South Whidbey swimmers in training and traveling with 4A Kamiak, hit the water in two events.

Repping a 2B school, Price claimed 7th in the 200 free, winning the consolation finals Saturday in two minutes, 4.88 seconds.

He tapped the wall a solid eight seconds ahead of his nearest competitor in that race.

Price also finished 11th in the 100 free, slicing through the water in 56.47 seconds.

While he was the lone Wolf, he had three companions from South Whidbey along for the trek.

Jack Hemple claimed 4th in both the 50 and 100 free, while Rowan Jung finished 6th in both the 200 IM and 500 free.

Tyson Prendergast delivered an 8th place finish in the 100 butterfly, and a 9th place finish in the 100 breaststroke.
