One more swing to fill the stat sheet

The bat gets a rest.

After swinging a hot stick all season, Coupeville grad Joey Lippo officially reached the end of his sophomore season playing baseball at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.

The Owls dropped a pair of doubleheaders over the weekend, falling to Thomas College 15-3 and 4-3 Saturday, before succumbing 12-2 and 4-1 Sunday to New England College.

UMPI finishes 6-29, which is a bump in games played and games won from last year’s pandemic-altered 1-17 campaign.

Lippo went out lashing, picking up four hits and three RBI in his final weekend of play.

The former Wolf three-sport star was one of just two Owls to play in all 35 games, and he led UMPI in at-bats (123), runs (31), triples (2), RBI (22), walks (14), and stolen bases (8).

Skyy Lippo’s twin brother was second on his squad in hits (39), batting average (.317), on-base percentage (.386) and home runs (1).

Joey played most of the season in the outfield, gunning down runners with long throws from the shadows, but he also pitched in three games for the Owls, striking out four across five innings of work.

Wright caps college softball season

Season three is in the books.

Coupeville grad Sarah Wright played the final softball game of her junior campaign Saturday, as Sewanee: The University of the South was eliminated from postseason play.

The former Wolf smacked one of her team’s two hits, but the Tigers fell 4-0 to Centre College.

That, combined with a 3-2 defeat to Millsaps College Friday sends Sewanee home from the double-elimination Southern Athletic Association tournament.

Wright and Co. finished 7-26 on the season, but the 33 games were more than the Tigers played the last two seasons combined.

The pandemic restricted Sewanee to just 16 and 10 games during Wright’s freshman and sophomore seasons, respectively.

This time around, the former Wolf was one of three Tigers to start all 33 games on the diamond.

Wright finished the season leading the team in at-bats (102), runs (15), and home runs (2).

She was #2 in RBI (17), and #3 in hits (25), total bases (35), and doubles (4) while seeing time at both catcher and third base.

The former Coupeville Valedictorian is majoring in politics at Sewanee and has made both the SAA Academic Honor Roll and All-Sportsmanship team during her time in Tennessee.

Lippo lashes, Owls dominate

Things are trending upwards.

Sparked by Coupeville grad Joey Lippo, the University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball squad swept a doubleheader Thursday, running its winning streak to three games.

The Owls bopped the University of Maine at Farmington 6-1 and 18-5 in the twin-bill, improving to 6-19 on the season.

UMPI, which won just a single game last season, is starting to find its groove, and a big part of the credit goes to Lippo and his deadly bat.

The former Wolf, now a college sophomore, filled up the stat sheet Thursday, piling up two hits — including a double — two RBI, two walks, four runs, and a stolen base.

On the season, Skyy Lippo’s twin is one of just two Owls to have appeared in all 25 games.

Joltin’ Joey leads the UMPI hardball squad in runs (23), triples (2), RBI (18), and walks (11), and is tied for top honors in stolen bases (5) and home runs (1).

The former CHS three-sport star is second in at-bats (88) and hits (30), and third in batting average (.341), on-base percentage (.412), and slugging percentage (.455).

Lippo and Co. have 10 regular season games remaining, with four of them coming up this weekend, when UMPI is set to play back-to-back doubleheaders against Husson University.

Have bat, will win games

Across the nation, Wolves are winning the day.

Saturday, Coupeville High School grad Sarah Wright picked up a game-deciding RBI in a college softball game, and Sunday it was Joey Lippo’s turn.

The former Wolf baseball ace punched across the game’s only run with a fourth-inning single to lift the University of Maine at Presque Isle to a 1-0 victory against Thomas College.

The win gave the Owls a doubleheader split after they fell 11-6 in the opener, and lifts UMPI to 4-19 on the season.

Lippo finished with three hits, two runs, an RBI, and a stolen base on the afternoon.

Presque Isle is in the thick of its schedule, with six games set for next week.

The Owls have doubleheaders Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday, with 12 games total left on the regular season schedule.

Lippo, a UMPI sophomore, has been at the forefront of the stat chase all season.

Skyy’s twin brother leads the Owls in at-bats (80), runs (19), triples (2), home runs (1), RBI (16), walks (9), and stolen bases (4), and is second in batting average (.342) and hits (28).

Wright has the winning touch

She’s an artist with a bat in her hands.

Playing in the regular season finale Saturday in Danville, Kentucky, Coupeville grad Sarah Wright put together another strong performance on the softball diamond.

The Sewanee: University of the South junior collected three hits, including a double, and two RBI as the Tigers split a doubleheader with Centre College.

The biggest of the two RBI came in the opener, where it proved to be the game-winner.

Trailing 3-0 heading to the top of the seventh and final inning, Sewanee rallied for four runs to pull off the stunner.

Freshman pinch hitter Kaila Seger drilled a three-run home run to right-center to tie things up, before Wright lofted a long sac fly to plate the go-ahead run.

Sewanee, which finishes the regular season at 7-24, now advances to the double-elimination Southern Athletic Association Tournament.

The Tigers are expected to begin play Apr. 21, but the opponent and site have yet to be revealed.

Wright, who finally got to play a full college season in her third go-round, after the pandemic trimmed down her first two seasons, is one of just three Tigers to have started all 31 games this season.

She leads Sewanee in at-bats (95) and is tied for first in runs (15) and home runs (2).

Wright has 23 hits — including four doubles — 16 RBI, three walks, and a tidy .607 OPS.
