Wolf alumni soar on college diamonds!!

They’ve all found their niche.

Four former Coupeville High School stars are playing ball on college teams this spring, and all four of them have found a way to contribute to their teams.

Up-to-the-moment updates, in alphabetic order:

Ben Etzell — A junior at Saint John’s University in Minnesota, where the Johnnies are 22-8 overall, 11-3 in league.

He’s the team’s closer, pitching in a squad-best 13 games, going 2-0 with five saves and a 2.38 ERA.

His 22 strikeouts are second-best for SJU, while he’s holding opposing teams to a .203 batting average.

Hailey Hammer — A sophomore at Everett Community College.

She’s hitting .329 with two home runs and 15 RBI for a squad which is 11-17 overall, 9-10 in conference.

She has 24 hits in 24 games, with 13 runs, 10 walks and a double.

Aaron Trumbull — A freshman at Olympic College, which is 6-22 overall, 3-13 in league action.

He has one hit and two walks, but is truly excelling in the field, where he’s played error-free ball.

He has 34 put-outs, three assists and the best fielding percentage on the team.

Monica Vidoni — A sophomore at Rainy River Community College in Minnesota, where the Voyageurs are 15-11 overall, 3-1 in conference play.

She’s hitting .372 in 25 games, with 16 hits (including three doubles), 13 RBI, 10 runs, five walks and four stolen bases.

Monica Vidoni is one of four former Wolves playing college ball this spring.

Across two states and two sports, former Wolves continue to shine.

Coupeville High School has four alumni currently playing college baseball or softball, and they’re all deep into their respective seasons.

Up to the moment stats for the fab four:

Ben Etzell — A junior at Saint John’s University in Minnesota, where he’s become the closer for a Johnnies squad which sits at 16-7.

He tops the teams in appearances (nine), games finished (seven) and saves (two), while sitting #3 with 17 strikeouts, seven of those looking.

Over the course of 16.2 innings, he’s posted a 3.24 ERA, holding opposing teams to a .233 batting average.

Hailey Hammer — A sophomore at Everett Community College, she’s hitting .321 over a 19-game span for a 7-15 team.

She has 18 hits, including an out-of-the-park home-run, 10 runs, 10 walks and nine RBI.

Aaron Trumbull — A freshman at Olympic Community College, where he’s played in eight games for a 6-14 squad.

He has two walks, a hit and a run while providing strong defense at first base.

Monica Vidoni — A sophomore at Rainy River Community College in Minnesota, where the Voyageurs are 10-9.

She’s appeared in 18 games, posting a .433 batting average with 13 hits (including two doubles), nine RBI, eight runs and three walks.

Killer Kailey nets college hoops gig!!

England to Cow Town to Buffalo.

The basketball journey of Kailey Kellner continues, as the Coupeville High School senior has signed a letter of intent to take the court for D’Youville College.

An NCAA D-III school, the New York-based institution found her through her recruiting website, and it was kismet.

“I visited there during the summer and it hit home with me,” Kellner said. “I’m so excited to continue my journey as a basketball player.”

After arriving in Coupeville midway through her freshman season, after a family move back to the USA, Kailey became an integral part of Wolf Nation.

A three-point gunner with a sweet shooting touch who was never afraid to get down and dirty in the paint — most memorably in a playoff win over Seattle Christian her junior season — she never lost a varsity game in Olympic League play.

Kellner also played softball and was a manager for the volleyball squad.

D’Youville College is a private co-ed college with a Roman Catholic tradition. It celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2008.

The school’s teams, the Bisons, play in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, a 10-team league.

The women’s hoops squad Kellner is joining finished 7-17 this winter.

While most of her future teammates hail from New York (seven of the nine possible returnees), she likely won’t be the only player from Washington state.

CeDrice Howard, who would be a sophomore next year, played her prep ball for Curtis High School.

Wolf grads rule college diamonds!!

The Coupeville connection is alive and well.

Former Wolves can be found playing on college softball and baseball diamonds in several states this spring.

Ben Etzell and Monica Vidoni are pulling on their uniforms in Minnesota, while Aaron Trumbull and Hailey Hammer are still swinging away here in Washington state.

An alphabetically-assembled update through Wednesday:

Ben Etzell — Now a junior at Saint John’s University, the former Cascade Conference baseball MVP has made a team-high six appearances on the pitching mound.

He has a 1.86 era across 9.2 innings, with 13 strikeouts and a save for a Johnnies squad which sits at 9-5.

Hailey Hammer — The sophomore slugger mashed a grand slam for Everett Community College, and overall is hitting .308 with seven RBI in 10 games.

The Trojans are 4-9 and she has eight hits, seven walks and six runs.

Aaron Trumbull — Playing as a freshman for Olympic Community College, he’s appeared in three games for a 2-6 team. Overall, he’s hitting .250 with a run and a walk to his credit.

Monica Vidoni — A sophomore at Rainy River Community College, she’s hitting .267 through 10 games for a 6-5 Voyageurs squad.

She has four hits (including a double), three runs, two RBI, two walks and a stolen base.

Hammer’s a slammer!!

Get out the rye bread and mustard, Grandma, it’s grand salami time!

The words of longtime Mariners announcer Dave Niehaus echoed across the Northwest once again Thursday, as former Wolf Hailey Hammer pounded a grand slam in her college softball game.

Hammer, a sophomore at Everett Community College, connected in game two of a doubleheader sweep of Skagit Valley, as the Trojans opened Northwest Athletic Conference play.

Everett shredded the Cardinals 7-3 and 10-0.

Hammer’s homer was a game-winner, though no one knew it at the moment.

The game was knotted in a scoreless tie and the bags were juiced when she locked on to a pitch and smashed all the hopes and dreams of the SVC pitcher.

With the sweep, Everett improved to 4-7 overall, 2-0 in league play.
