Four players, four success stories.

As the college baseball and softball seasons play out across the country, several former Wolves are busy polishing their reps.

Softball sluggers Madeline Roberts (Shoreline Community College), Hailey Hammer (Everett CC) and Monica Vidoni (Rainy River CC) and diamond man Ben Etzell (Saint John’s University) are all sporting different uniforms these days.

But, while they may have departed Coupeville High School, their exploits are still avidly followed by local fans.

A mid-season report card:

Hammer, a freshman, is hitting .333 for a 7-7 Everett squad, with eight hits, four RBI and three runs in 10 games.

She’s cranked a double, drawn two walks and has a .966 fielding percentage for a team that’s 2-0 in conference play.

Roberts has piled up two hits (including a double), four runs, two walks and two stolen bases in seven games thus far in her sophomore campaign.

Shoreline sits at 5-5 overall, 1-1 in league play.

Vidoni’s team, based out of Minnesota, kicked off the season earlier than the Washington schools, and the freshman has seen action in 17 of her team’s 19 games.

The Voyageurs are 12-7 and Vidoni has 11 hits (including an over-the-fence home-run), seven runs, six RBI, two walks and a stolen base.

Etzell, a sophomore, is also in Minnesota, where the Johnnies are 13-7 on the season.

The former Wolf has seen mound time in four games, going 1-0 with a 6.88 ERA, striking out 16 over 17 innings of work.

At the plate, he has six hits (including two doubles), seven runs, four walks and four RBI in 12 games.

Monica Vidoni went yard.

The Coupeville High School grad, now a freshman outfielder for Rainy River Community College in Minnesota, socked a solo, over-the-fence, home run Saturday as her squad swept two games.

“I was so excited I didn’t realize I was sprinting around the bases,” Vidoni said.

The big blow gives her nine hits and five RBI for a 12-5 Voyageurs squad.

She’s one of three former Wolves currently playing college softball, with former CHS teammates Hailey Hammer (Everett Community College) and Madeline Roberts (Shoreline Community College) also suiting up.

Hammer, a freshman, has eight hits, four RBI and a .348 batting average for a 5-7 team, while Roberts, a sophomore, has scored four runs and pilfered two stolen bases for a 3-3 squad.

Ben Etzell, a sophomore playing baseball at St. John’s University in Minnesota, is 1-0 with 13 strikeouts in 14 innings as a pitcher this season.

He’s also racked up six hits, seven runs and two doubles at the plate for the 11-5 Johnnies.

Ben Etzell’s back at it again, with the wins.

The Coupeville High School grad, now a sophomore pitcher at Saint John’s University in Minnesota, earned his first victory of the season Saturday.

Making the start for the Johnnies against Concordia-Wisconsin in Tucson, Arizona, Etzell went four innings, giving up six runs on eight hits and two strikeouts in a 10-7 win.

It was his second appearance on the mound for Saint John’s (3-3) this season, following a relief appearance against the University of Jamestown.

With the victory against Concordia, Etzell is 2-0 with two saves lifetime in college ball. He notched a 2.71 ERA as a freshman.

The former Cascade Conference MVP is swinging an active bat, as well, this season.

Etzell is 4-11 (.364) at the plate, with three runs, three RBI, a double and two walks.

In the field, he has an .875 fielding percentage, with three assists.

Saint John’s returns to action with a road trip to Ft. Myers, Florida over Spring Break (Mar. 20-25), where the Johnnies will play 10 games.

When he’s not playing baseball, Etzell is pursuing a degree in Elementary Education at the school that dad Mike, a CHS baseball coach, graduated from in 1988.

Vidoni nets college VB award!!

She’s killin’ it in the classroom as well as on the athletic stage.

Monica Vidoni, a 2015 graduate of Coupeville High School, was recently honored for her academic work while playing college ball.

Vidoni, who is a freshman at Rainy River Community College, was tabbed to the Minnesota College Athletic Conference’s All-Academic team for volleyball.

It was a pleasant surprise for the hard-working former Wolf.

“I didn’t think that would happen,” said a very happy Vidoni.

She is currently the only former CHS athlete to be playing three sports at the college level, competing for RRCC in volleyball, basketball and softball.

Vidoni and her Voyageur diamond teammates are off to a 4-2 start on their season.

Rainy River went 18-13 in volleyball and 15-11 in basketball.

The Wolves are everywhere.

With spring upon us, at least three former Coupeville High School players are suiting up to play college softball.

Madeline Roberts is a sophomore at Shoreline Community College while Hailey Hammer and Monica Vidoni are freshmen at, respectively, Everett Community College and Rainy River Community College.

All three teams are slated to start play this weekend, with Hammer and Vidoni’s squads getting the first games.

Appearing at a tournament in the Tri-Cities, Hammer played two games against Columbia Basin College Friday, then took the field for a double-header Saturday against Yakima Valley CC.

Battling a balky back, she played defense only in the openers, but on day two, talked her coach into letting her swing a bat.

In her first official at-bat as a regular-season college player Hammer blasted a resounding double, then followed that up with a couple singles and a handful of RBIs.

Proving she can hurt foes in multiple ways, she also played small ball when necessary.

“My coach really preaches that it’s a team game and not personal,” Hammer said. “So I bunted to move the runners and hit behind the runners to get them to score.”

Vidoni and her team are in Florida, where the Voyageurs opened with a split against fellow Minnesota teams.

After losing 3-0 to St. Cloud in the opener (Vidoni had the lone Rainy River hit), RRCC rebounded to down Itasca 6-3 in its second game.

She rapped another base hit in the nightcap and hauled in several fly balls while roaming the outfield.

It was a strong opening for the Wolf grad, who also has played volleyball and basketball this season.

“I was excited,” Vidoni said.
