Time to put the rally hats on.

A combination of injuries and family moves is forcing Coupeville High School baseball coaches to scramble even before the season arrives.

The Wolves have advanced to the state tourney in back-to-back seasons but are “in danger of not having enough kids for a team this year,” said head man Steve Hilborn.

A team meeting has been set for 1:30 PM Wednesday to give coaches a better idea of how many players may be available.

It will be held in the health room inside the entrance to the CHS gym.

For Hilborn and his staff, the push to save the campaign is underway.

“Two straight years to state and then we can’t even make a team?” he said. “Doesn’t seem possible.”

Joey Lippo fires liquid heat in an All-Star game. (Photos property Tyler Turner)

Joey Lippo got some postseason love.

The Coupeville High School grad earned a Gold Glove Award as a catcher for his work in the Aroostook Men’s Baseball League this summer, while also notching an invite to the All-Star game.

Lippo, who was a standout diamond player at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, was in his second season of summer ball.

Postgame fist-bumps for everyone.

Skyy’s twin brother played multiple positions for the Mavericks, who finished the regular season in second place.

Lippo and Co. fell to the third-seeded Bad News Bears in the playoffs, with that team going on to notch its second-straight title.

Before his time in Maine, where he also golfed for UMPI, Lippo was a three-sport star in Coupeville, playing tennis, basketball, and baseball for the Wolves.

The best glove in the biz.

You can disguise the fact they’re Wolves, but not that they’re winners.

Coupeville High School baseball stars Landon Roberts, Camden Glover, and Chase Anderson have spent the summer wearing Oak Harbor colors for travel ball.

Along the way, the trio and their teammates have played in five tournaments, and capped things this weekend by sweeping four games in Ellensburg to capture a tourney title in the Central Washington Bullpen Series.

The Wildcats (and their Wolf compatriots) won 10-9, 13-3, 8-0, and 11-10 across two days of play to earn the crown.

Roberts, who will be a CHS senior, patrolled right field while also pitching in two games.

Meanwhile, Glover held down third base (and pitched out of the bullpen) while Anderson pulled off his best Edgar Martinez tribute as a hard-hitting DH.

Halle Black shows off the first of many trophies. (Photos courtesy Mandi Black)

She is the bright future of Coupeville sports.

Halle Black, the daughter of former Wolf stars Allen and Mandi (Murdy) Black, is deeply connected to the prairie.

She has parents, aunts and uncles, cousins, and grandparents, even a lil’ brother, who are all either talented athletes or passionate sports supporters — or both.

As spring has morphed into summer, Halle, who has already made a mark for herself as a basketball player, has embraced the softball life her mom once lived.

As Mandi wrote on Facebook:

What a LONG first sb season, 3 teams, 3 sets of coaches, multiple different positions played and a trip to state!

I am so proud of how passionate you are, in anything you try Halle!

You’re so coachable and your competitive side is starting to shine, and this mama cannot wait for all our future sports seasons!

A softball season that began in a Central Whidbey uniform ended with a trip to the big dance for Halle as the lone prairie rep on a North Whidbey squad.

While there she, like her new teammates — who should probably all talk to their parents about moving to Coupeville where they can get proper media coverage — endured oppressive heat and the chance to play big city all-star teams.

They may not have won a state title, but they set the path for future success and did it with class and a never-say-die attitude.

There were countless young girls and boys who ventured onto the diamond to play baseball and softball this spring on Whidbey.

All should be commended for making the commitment, whether they were first-timers or are already grizzled vets while still in grade school.

Today, though, we offer a special shout-out to Halle and make her our poster girl for the movement.

Be proud of what you and your friends accomplished, Miss Black. And come back next season, and the season after that, ready to achieve even more.

While never forgetting that basketball, where your old man made his name as a hoops hotshot with a torrid shooting touch, is still God’s Chosen Sport.

If Coupeville athletics, and Coupeville Sports the blog have a future, and they do, it’s thanks to your generation.

Never stop reaching for greatness and never stop having fun out there.

The bright future.

It’s like someone built a time machine and took the game back to the old days, when you could pitch until your arm fell off.

Coupeville grad Joey Lippo, who is filling some of his summer days playing another season in the Aroostook Men’s Baseball League in Maine, had no use for the bullpen last week.

Instead, the former Wolf chucked 146 pitches, going all the way on the mound for the Mavericks as they pulled out a come-from-behind 8-7 win over the Bad News Bears.

Lippo, who recently graduated from the University of Maine at Presque Isle, whiffed seven across seven innings of work.

He also delivered two hits, two runs, and a stolen base while taking his own swings at the plate.

The Mavericks got Lippo the win when they rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh, walking things off with a two-run single from Aroostook League rookie Ben Thomas.

The nail-biter came on the heels of a 12-8 win over the Maineiacs, an expansion squad in the five-team conference.

That leaves Lippo and company in a first-place tie at 2-0 a week into the season.
