Balanced attack spurs league victory

Balance beat brilliance.

Darrington’s Hunter Anderson went off for a game-high 30 Friday on his home floor, but the Coupeville High School varsity boys’ basketball team had the answer.

Getting points from all nine players to hit the court, the Wolves held the Loggers at bay, heading back to the bus with a 63-51 victory.

The road win lifts Brad Sherman’s squad to 3-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 4-10 overall.

It also keeps them solidly in possession of third place in the seven-team conference at the midway point of the 10-game league schedule.

Heading into a week where it will host Concrete Tuesday, then travel to Orcas Island Friday, Coupeville sits a game back of La Conner (4-1) and two off of front-runner Mount Vernon Christian (5-0).

Camden Glover, netting a free throw here, was one of nine Wolves to score Friday.

Balance was the name of the game Friday, as CHS jumped out to an 18-7 lead after one quarter, with five different players rattling the rim for points.

From there the Wolves steadily built up their lead, pushing the advantage to 37-23 at halftime, then 52-35 through three frames.

Chase Anderson led Coupeville with a team-best 16 points, pushing himself to the cusp of a personal milestone.

The Wolf junior heads home with 497 points stashed in the career bank, just a three-ball away from becoming the 51st CHS boy to crack the 500-point club for a program which started play back in 1917.

The Battlin’ Bronec Brothers provided key support against Darrington, with Hurlee banking in 13 and Hunter knocking down 10, while Jack Porter netted eight points.

Landon Roberts (5), Johnny Porter (4), Camden Glover (4), Malachi Somes (2), and Davin Houston (1) also scored for Coupeville in the road win.

Wolf JV savages Loggers

We may never know the final score for sure, but it was a win.

A big, big win.

Playing for the first time in a week, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball squad crunched host Darrington Friday night, running the Loggers off their own court.

Was the final score 47-18, as the scoreboard showed?

Or 52-18, as the book has it?

Mysteries, eternal mysteries, doomed to fade into the fog of memory.

For now, just call it a victory, one which lifts the Wolves to 4-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-4 overall, and hands the CHS young guns their third consecutive W.

It was a game dominated by the visitors, as Coupeville dropped in the first 13 points to open things, before eventually settling for a 13-2 lead after one quarter, and a 27-9 advantage at the half.

From there, the Wolves continued to bang away, caressing Darrington’s unique backboards with their picture-perfect shots.

Five different CHS players drained a three-ball, with nine of 12 scoring on the night.

We’re going with the 52 points shown in the books — this is Coupeville Sports, after all, and we’re unabashedly homers — with Riley Lawless leading the way with eight.

Mahkai Myles (7), Easton Green (7), Kyle McCrimmon (6), Malachi Somes (5), Carson Grove (5), Davin Houston (5), Sage Arends (5), and Liam Blas (4) round out the scoring in this scenario, with Nathan Coxsey, Khanor Jump, and Jayden Little also seeing floor time.

The Wolf young guns will sit out next Tuesday’s home games with Concrete, as the Lions are having trouble fielding a second unit, but return to action Jan. 24 when CHS travels to Orcas Island.

Bronec big, but Tigers too tough

The Wolves got caught in the bounce-back.

Napavine, one of the best varsity boys 2B hoops squads in the state, got stung Saturday in a narrow loss to Adna, as the two schools scrapped for first place in the always-tough Central 2B League.

Monday rolled around, and Coupeville, having made the 152-mile trek off island for a non-conference tilt, found itself in the bullseye.

Outscored 27-7 during a frantic first quarter by the host Tigers, the Wolves rebounded to play three competitive quarters but fell 76-52.

The loss drops Coupeville to 3-10 on the season, and the Wolves now turn to the heart of their own league schedule.

CHS, which sits at 2-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, visits Darrington Friday to kick off a six-game string of conference games, with prime playoff positioning up for grabs.

On to league play!

While Monday’s first quarter may be something they want to forget, the memory of the next three frames could be a strong inspiration for the Wolves.

Coupeville dug deep to “win” the second (12-11) and fourth (16-14) quarters and got scoring from nine of 11 players.

While Napavine star Karsen Denault topped all players with a game-high 20 points, Wolf big man Hurlee Bronec almost matched him.

The CHS senior, who has been on a bit of an offensive rampage of late, poured in a team-best 19 points, while scoring in every quarter.

Hurlee Bronec topped out with eight points in the third and passed a personal milestone in the game, cracking the 150-point club for his varsity hoops career.

That leaves him hot on the heels of twin brother Hunter, who, for the moment at least, still leads the family scoring race at 158-153.

Chase Anderson rattled the rims for nine points in support of Hurlee Bronec, including netting a pair of second-half three-balls, while Johnny Porter banked in six.

Camden Glover (5), Landon Roberts (4), Jack Porter (4), Hunter Bronec (2), Davin Houston (2), and Malachi Somes (1) also scored, with Easton Green and Carson Field rounding out the rotation in the road game.

Houston’s fourth-quarter bucket was his first as a varsity player, as he becomes the 428th Wolf boy I’ve been able to document scoring in a varsity game between 1917-2025.

Cold shooting dooms hardwood heroes

Get in the dang basket!

Too many shots spun off the glass, rolled around the rim and popped back out, or just missed their intended target Friday night for the Coupeville High School varsity boys’ basketball team.

Unable to buy a break, or a bucket, the Wolves fell 55-41 to visiting La Conner in a game which seemed very winnable.

Now 2-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 3-9 overall, Coupeville hits the road next week, playing at Napavine on Monday and Darrington Friday.

The first of those games, a non-conference tilt, is a rumble with a major force in 2B sports, while the latter will bring CHS to the halfway point of the 10-game league season.

Friday’s showdown with La Conner started on a good note for the hometown hoops stars, as Coupeville busted out to a quick 4-0 lead.

Camden Glover set up Hurlee Bronec for a bucket in the paint, before Chase Anderson turned a steal into a breakaway layup, and things were looking rosy.

Unfortunately for the Wolves, that would be the only lead they enjoyed.

La Conner carried a 13-7 lead into the first break, before stretching its advantage out to 28-11 late in the second quarter.

CHS closed the half on a 6-1 mini-run with Jack Porter, Hurlee Bronec, and Johnny Porter scoring, but Brad Sherman’s squad was never able to get the deficit down to single digits once the Braves put together their game-cracking push.

Two buckets from Hurlee Bronec and a sweet lil’ one-handed jumper from Landon Roberts had the Wolves within 35-24 midway through the third, but La Conner had an immediate response, rolling off 10 unanswered points.

In a somewhat chippy game — which featured plenty of back talk to the refs, as well as the Braves both earning a technical foul and losing a key player to a bloodied mouth — the final frame was a back-and-forth slugfest.

Anderson, crashing hard to the hoop while hunting for free throw opportunities to stop the clock, rattled the rim for 10 of his team-best 14 points down the stretch.

But La Conner responded almost every time, dropping a series of jumpers which were like daggers and prevented the Wolves from breaking off any substantial late runs.

Braves gunner Brayden Pedroza topped all scorers with 22 points, while Hurlee Bronec, working hard in the paint, banked in 11 to back Anderson’s 14.

Glover (5), Jack Porter (5), Roberts (2), Johnny Porter (2), and Hunter Bronec (2) also scored, with Malachi Somes, Davin Houston, and Carson Field seeing floor time as well for the Wolves.

Late surge lifts JV boys to victory

They’re rock stars in crunch time.

Fighting from behind Friday, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team used a dynamic fourth quarter run to seal a home win against La Conner.

Finishing on a torrid 18-11 tear across the final eight minutes, the Wolves upended the Braves 41-38 to claim the only CHS victory of the night.

Now 3-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 4-4 overall, the young guns will be back in action next Friday, Jan. 17, when they travel to the wilds of Darrington.

The bout with La Conner was a close one all night, with neither team able to pull away.

The game was knotted at 10-10 at the first break, with La Conner building small leads through two (17-15) and three (27-23) quarters of play.

The final frame was a different story, however, with Khanor Jump, Davin Houston, Malachi Somes, and Mahkai Myles combining to outscore La Conner down the stretch.

Jump finished with a team high 10 points, while Liam Blas (6), Myles (6), Houston (5), Somes (5), Sage Arends (4), Easton Green (3), and Riley Lawless (2) rounded out the offensive attack for the Wolves.

Nathan Coxsey, Carson Grove, and Kyle McCrimmon also saw floor time in the conference win.
