Tiffany Briscoe

So, so close.

Stranding 10 runners on base and unable to get that one elusive big hit to bust things wide open Thursday, the Coupeville High School softball squad narrowly missed out on a chance to nab a season sweep over arch-rival South Whidbey.

Suffering a 5-4 loss that ended when Tiffany Briscoe’s hard smash was knocked down at second for a game-ending out with the bases juiced, the Wolves fell to 4-8 overall, 3-8 in Cascade Conference play.

They still hold a one-game lead over the Falcons (3-10 in league play) in the race for the #1 playoff seed among 1A schools from the 1A/2A conference.

If the teams tie, Coupeville will own the tiebreaker, having taken two of three from their Langley foes this season.

The Wolves looked like they might run away with the game right out of the gate, but then things stalled.

Madeline Roberts walked to lead off the game, took second on a wild pitch and craftily stole third to rattle the Falcon hurler.

Breeanna Messner took advantage, lashing an RBI double to left center, her first of a game-high three hits and the CHS fan section was jumpin.’

Unfortunately, that was where the offense came to a skidding halt, as a ground out and two strikeouts halted the brief rally. After that, Coupeville wouldn’t score again until the fifth.

South Whidbey pieced together a couple of nice hits and took advantage of CHS errors, both physical and mental, and built a 5-1 lead.

It could have been worse, but Wolf hurler McKayla Bailey found her groove and Coupeville pulled off a couple of defensive gems.

Madeline Strasburg gunned down a runner at the plate, with Wolf catcher Messner smartly moving up the third base line to snag the throw from center and slap down the tag.

Bailey and Messner later triggered a wham-bam double play to get out of a bases-loaded jam. Bailey snagged a come-backer, fired to Messner for the force at home, then watched as her battery mate nailed the batter headed to first to end the inning.

The Wolves also got nice plays from Roberts, who sprinted over from shortstop to snag a fly ball down the line in left, and second baseman Emily Coulter, who pulled off a snazzy backhand dig on a ball hit up at the middle.

Coupeville cut away at the lead with Briscoe’s first RBI of the season, then launched what looked like it might be a game-winning rally in the seventh.

Singles by Messner, Hammer and Bailey loaded the bags, before Strasburg plated a run with a perfectly-placed blooper between the Falcon pitcher and first baseman.

Down by one, Briscoe, a freshman who has begun to swing a dangerous bat, smacked a liner to the right side of second base.

An inch either way and CHS runners would have been dancing around the bags, but a Falcon fielder got her glove on it at the last second and knocked it down, setting up a game-ending force play.

Messner (3) and Strasburg (2) led the hit parade for the Wolves, while Roberts, Hammer, Bailey, Briscoe and Coulter all rapped out one apiece.

With his first two hitters getting hot, CHS coach David King is anxious to see his entire lineup swing the bat consistently.

“Players are working hard every day, know what needs to be fixed, but when we get into games we revert back to being too anxious and not showing discipline at the plate and not staying back on the ball,” he said.

Bree has been our most consistent hitter up to this point and Madi Roberts is putting pressure on the defense with walking or getting her hits,” King added. “If we can get others to join in, we will be a team that will turn these one-run losses into wins.”

McKayla Bailey

McKayla Bailey moves the Earth itself when she gets nasty on the mound.

This thing turned around on a dime.

Two days after its worst game of the season, the Coupeville High School softball squad found its mojo, big-time, and pulled off a thrilling 8-6 win over visiting Lakewood.

Big hits, defensive gems, a renewed spark and then a lights-out finale from McKayla Bailey, who stalked the mound in the seventh, cementing her rep as the baddest woman alive by reaching down and punching out hope itself.

With a lead to hold, she got flat-out nasty, whiffing one of the Cascade Conference’s best hitters — homer-hittin’ Haley Malakowski — on a fastball that exploded into catcher Breeanna Messner’s glove with a sound that carried across the prairie.

After a little help from left fielder Haley Sherman, who made a superb running catch on a ball over her head for the second out, Bailey went back into Terminator mode and slammed the door shut.

It was a fastball again, and the final Lakewood slugger hit nothing but air as the ball whistled by for strike three.

It was a brilliant bounce-back for the Wolves, now 4-6 overall, 3-6 in Cascade Conference play. With their first win this season over a 2A school, they remain the #1 team among the league’s 1A squads.

Things got off to a bumpy start, with Lakewood scoring all its runs in the first two innings. Then Bailey went to work, facing the minimum batters in three of the final five innings, and her squad responded with an offensive display of its own.

McKayla has been solid all year long for us as our pitcher. Today she seemed to find a spot that fit her well and did what she does best,” CHS coach David King said. “Kept the Lakewood hitters off balance from the third inning on and let her defense help her by throwing the right pitches in the right locations throughout the game.”

At the plate, everything was clicking for Coupeville.

The team’s first two hitters, Madeline Roberts and Messner, got things started with three hits apiece and combined for five RBI. Sherman and Emily Coulter backed them up, with two hits apiece.

Sherman thumped her first triple of the season, while Coulter and Messner launched doubles.

The Wolves used their speed to throw off Lakewood, with Roberts scoring the team’s first run when she beat an attempted rundown. Nimbly dodging the Cougar fielders, the speedy spark plug slid across the plate before they knew what had hit them.

Coupeville added RBIs from Roberts and Messner, before erupting for three in the bottom of the fifth to tie and two more in the sixth to claim the lead.

With Roberts at second in the fifth, King (“either dumb luck or smart coaching, probably dumb luck”), let Messner suddenly swing away after a failed bunt attempt, and the senior promptly parked an RBI double just inside the left field line.

After Hailey Hammer plated Messner on a fielder’s choice, Sherman decided to use almost the entire prairie, crushing an RBI triple to right center to knot the game at six.

Coupeville staked Bailey to her first lead of the game in the sixth, using a double from Coulter, a single from Roberts, an RBI single from Messner and a sac fly off the bat of Hammer.

After a tough loss to Cedarcrest in the rain Wednesday, a game in which little went well, King was thrilled to see his team bounce back. The extra work put in at the practice between games paid immediate dividends.

“This game we put everything together. Pitching, defense, hitting and base running,” he said. “The team came out focused and remained focused the whole game.

“Many players stepped up tonight with their hitting. Defensively we played solid, made all of the routine plays and added a few “wow” plays,” King added. “Total team effort and a game to build on.”

Hey, they played almost two innings this time. That’s a start.

After having three of its first four games rained out, the Coupeville High School softball squad actually made it to Sultan Wednesday, took the field, scored some runs, worked a few kinks out and … then it started raining again.

The game was called with Sultan holding a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the second, and the two squads will pick up where they left off the next time they face.

Most likely, the game would be finished as the first half of a doubleheader April 14, when Coupeville is set to return to Sultan. The schools are scheduled to play three game this season, with the Turks coming to the Island May 5.

With the game put on hold, the Wolves remain a perfect 1-0. They are scheduled to host their next three games, starting with Cedarcrest Thursday at 4 PM.

In its brief return to the diamond, Coupeville played strongly.

Breeanna Messner crunched a double, sliding in safe even after slipping on the wet infield dirt after rounding first.

Madeline Strasburg snagged a fly ball in center, as well, then spun and airmailed a great throw to Jae LeVine at second, catching a straying Turk runner for a double play.

The pride of CHS.

The pride of CHS.

Just when they thought they were out, they got pulled back in.

Coupeville High School seniors Breeanna Messner and Amanda Fabrizi put the basketball gear back on one more time Saturday, playing in the 14th annual Skagit Valley High School “SENIOR” Basketball Games.

Sponsored by the Skagit County Parks and Rec Department, the event drew players from schools including Anacortes, Burlington-Edison, Concrete, La Conner, Mount Vernon, Sedro Woolley, Stanwood, Arlington, Lakewood, Oak Harbor and Mount Vernon Christian.

Family and friends were in the stands, and Coupeville hoops coaches David and Amy King, who coached both girls for many years, were first in line to see Messner and Fabrizi’s swan song.

“I would not miss them playing,” David King said. “Cleared this day and made sure nothing got scheduled.”

“What a fun game for Amanda and Bree to play in,” he added. “They both fit in well with the others players and represented themselves and Coupeville well.”

Playing together on the same squad, the Wolf duo went out winners, helping their team capture a fast-paced, high-scoring game.

Fabrizi scored her team’s first bucket, then banged home an offensive board moments later.

“One constant from Bree and Amanda, they played good defense like they have their high school careers,” King said. “Both went after loose balls and dove for them when the need was there. They deflected passes and got some steals.

“It was great to see them attacking the boards both offensively and defensively.”

The two Wolves closed the game together on the floor, playing the final five minutes along side their long-time running mate.

For their coaches, it was a bittersweet, beautiful end.

“Sitting in the stands watching these two playing with and against other senior all-stars from the area is a proud moment for Amy and me,” King said. “It proves that if you put the work in, put the team first, great things will follow.

“It also proves the athletes from Coupeville can compete at the highest level,” he added. “These two have worked hard every year to make themselves the players they are. More importantly they are great role models and have bright futures.”

For Fabrizi, who went from freezing on the CHS bleachers in the morning as she watched younger brother Clay Reilly play in a Wolf JV baseball game, to pouring in jumpers under the gym lights at night, the day was a great cap to her hoops career.

“I really enjoyed playing in this game,” Fabrizi said. “It felt like I was playing in a college game!”
