Brenden Gilbert: American Bad-Ass. (John Fisken photos)

When Brenden Gilbert graduates this spring, it will leave a huge hole.

A one-man wrecking crew, he anchored the line for the Coupeville High School football squad, doing his best to hold things together even when being bull-rushed by a swarm of Port Townsend big bodies.

And while the Wolves weren’t always able to put together the kind of season they wanted this past fall, any shortcomings weren’t because of their senior leader.

Every time #74 strode on to that field, he more than held his own, going down swinging on every last play.

Kid had no quit in him, and there’s a reason his coaches and fellow players looked to him as a rock.

As Coupeville’s younger players continue to improve and the wins start coming back, a large chunk of any future success will come from players following the work ethic Gilbert always exemplified.

But even more than his athletic ability, what will be missed will be his personality.

Brenden, who celebrates a cake day today, could be a fearsome beast on the gridiron.

But, unlike a lot of other high school football players, he always looked like he was having fun playing his game of choice.

Huge grin creasing his face, he could mess around for photos, then snap back into being deadly serious when it was time to protect his quarterback or try and decimate the other team’s gunslinger.

Gilbert played hard, but he never missed out on the enjoyment part, and that is huge.

That wisecracking personality is always on display, as he is also one of the most faithful of fans when it comes to rooting for his classmates.

Every volleyball match possible, every basketball game, he’s right there, at the heart of the CHS student section, easily the loudest and proudest of any of them.

Waving a Wolf flag, leading the cheers or just laying back and dropping one-liners, he’s the king of the castle.

I hope this birthday, and the many to come, are great, Mr. Gilbert.

From all your Wolf fans (and there are a lot, believe me), thank you for leaving it all on the field.

But also, thank you for just being a righteous dude.

The connections ran deep, roots going several generations.

As 11 Coupeville High School football players made the walk on Senior Night Friday, many of them symbolically carried last names on their jerseys which evoked memories of teams from long past.

Carrying the torch lit by fathers and grandfathers, they added another chapter in the story that is Wolf Nation.

Along for the moment, snapping away, was CHS hoops star Gabe Wynn, a guy who played with most of these seniors either on the gridiron, the court or the diamond.

20 days.

That’s all that remains until the first day of official fall practice (Aug. 19) for the Coupeville High School football team.

As the Wolves count down the days, what better time than now to drop a few more photos from the recent summer scrimmage against Lakeside?

So, here you go.

They lost, but they went down swinging.

The young guns on the Coupeville High School JV baseball squad couldn’t match up to host Klahowya Wednesday, getting ten-runned 16-6, but, before they did, the Wolves did some damage at the plate.

They plated four in the third and got big blows from Jake Hoagland and Brenden Gilbert, who each socked a triple.

Hoagland actually turned his blow into an unofficial inside the park home run due to “some help from the defense and some aggressive base coaching at third,” CHS coach Willie Smith said with a chuckle.

The Wolf freshman reached base three times, collecting another hit and a walk, while Jimmy Myers walked twice.

Jonathan Thurston came on in long relief after Coupeville’s starter was roughed up in the first and kept things close, whiffing seven over five innings.

The Wolves return to action with a tournament at South Whidbey today.

The man, the myth, the tacklin' machine -- Brenden Gilbert.

The man, the myth, the tacklin’ machine — Brenden Gilbert.

Brenden Gilbert has grown into being The Man.

From an eager kid who came up following in the footsteps of Wolf lineman extraordinaire Nick “The Big Hurt” Streubel, Gilbert has put on size and skill over the past couple of years.

Now, as he looks forward to his senior season next year, the two-way lineman is ready to step into the role of being the leader on the line.

With Jake and Josh Lord at his side, among others, Gilbert will lead the wrecking crew that opens holes on offense and closes them, emphatically, on defense.

Away from the gridiron, he’s an easy-going dude who supports his classmates, showing up at nearly every game, where he is among the loudest ‘n proudest CHS supporters.

The guy is quality through and through, on the field and off, and someone it’s easy for Wolf fans to hail as a bright, shining star.

As Gilbert celebrates a birthday today, we wish him all the best.

Keep on keepin’ on, Brenden. You have a town, a nation, behind you.
