Road? Home? Just win, baby!

So, this is what the Coupeville High School gym complex looks like.

Playing at home for the first time in six games this season, the Wolf JV boys’ basketball squad didn’t skip a beat, rolling to its fifth straight win.

Thunking visiting Forks 50-35 Tuesday, the Coupeville young guns grab their fifth-straight win and head into the new year boasting a 5-1 record.

While their varsity counterparts hit the road to Eastern Washington for a pair of holiday games, the JV doesn’t return to the court until Jan. 5.

When they do, the Wolves will be right back where they’re used to being — sitting on a school bus bumping down the back roads of America, this time headed for Darrington.

After that, six of their final nine games will be at home.

Squaring off with a rough-and-tumble group of hardwood hooligans from Forks, the young Wolves hit the gas pedal early Tuesday and never let the Spartans get a toehold.

Camden Glover, banging away down low in the paint, dominated in the first quarter, outscoring the visitors 9-8 by himself.

Tack on four apiece for Jack Porter, Landon Roberts, and Johnny Porter, and Coupeville had a 21-8 advantage heading into the first break.

The two teams actually played almost even from that point on, but that also meant Forks had little chance to play catch-up.

The lead slid out to 28-12 at the half, slightly cut back to 42-28 through three, then finished with little reason for the Wolves to sweat.

Glover finished with a game-high 18 points, while Aiden O’Neill and Jack Porter both banked in 10 in support of their big guy.

Roberts (8) and Johnny Porter (4) rounded out the scoring, with Davin Houston, Easton Green, Malachi Somes, Riley Lawless, and Makai Myles crashing the boards and harassing Spartan ballhandlers.

New town, same old win

Do they even want to come home?

The Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball squad has played its first five games on the road this season, going from town to town terrorizing the locals.

Friday night the place to be was Friday Harbor, and once again the young Wolves were in fine form, drilling their hosts 64-50 in the conference opener for both teams.

The victory lifts Coupeville to 4-1 overall, 1-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, and pushes its win streak to four games.

The young guns were finally scheduled to play at home Saturday against South Whidbey, but the Falcons had to reschedule, so CHS will wait until next Tuesday, when Forks makes the trek to Cow Town.

Which might not be a bad thing as the JV was battling team-wide sickness Friday.

Not that it slowed the Wolves roll.

The first quarter was a tense affair, with Friday Harbor clinging to an 18-17 lead at the break.

That changed in a hurry, however, as seven different Wolves scored in the second frame, powering a game-changing 17-9 run.

Up 34-27 at the half, Coupeville poured in another 20 points in the third to build a 54-38 advantage, then gave the bench some major playing time in the fourth.

The Wolves got scoring from nine of 10 players in uniform, with Camden Glover (19) and Jack Porter (16) combining for 35 points.

Johnny Porter (9), Aiden O’Neill (6), Landon Roberts (5), Malachi Somes (3), Riley Lawless (2), Makai Myles (2), and Easton Green (2) also scored, while Davin Houston brought defensive heat.

Bon voyage, diamond dogs

First, the big farewell. Then, the big game(s).

Coupeville High School baseball returns to the state playoffs Saturday, facing off with Toledo in Castle Rock, the first appearance for the Wolves at the big dance since 2014.

Win its opener, and CHS, which sits at 16-5 on the season, returns to the field later in the day to play Toutle Lake for a spot in the semifinals.

But, before they headed off on their long trek, the Wolves got a farewell from fellow students, teachers, coaches, parents, and hangers-on Friday, keeping alive a time-honored tradition.

The bats were barkin’

A hit for you, a hit for you, and what the hey, three hits for you.

With 10 different players picking up at least one base knock Tuesday, the Coupeville High School varsity baseball squad rapped out 20 hits en route to cracking host Concrete.

Erupting for 12 runs in one inning alone — with all but one tally coming with two outs — the Wolves decimated the Lions 18-1 in a game mercy-ruled after five frames.

Winners of eight of its last nine games, Coupeville gets to 10-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 12-4 overall.

The victory pulls the Wolves dead-even with Mount Vernon Christian (10-1, 11-3), which was idle Tuesday, for possession of first place in the NWL.

The two teams, who split their two-game season series, each have three league games remaining on their schedules.

Next up for Coupeville is a road trip to Darrington (5-6, 6-6) Thursday and a home clash with La Conner (2-9, 3-11) Saturday on Senior Night.

Tuesday’s romp in Concrete was actually close for two innings, with the Wolves up 3-1 headed to the top of the third.

CHS pushed three runs across in the first, courtesy a two-run double to left from Jonathan Valenzuela and an RBI single off the bat of Cole White.

But the Wolves came up empty in the second frame, with a would-be base thief thrown out at second.

Coupeville returned the favor quickly, with freshman catcher Chase Anderson gunning down a too-slow Lion runner in the bottom of the inning, and then he and his teammates went medieval on their hosts.

A fielder’s choice groundout from White bumped the lead to 4-1, but left Coupeville one out from ending the top of the third a bit prematurely.

Never fear, however.

From that point on, 12 straight Wolf hitters reached base safely, using a mix of seven hits, four Concrete errors, and one hit batsman.

The biggest blows were a two-run triple to right field by Jack Porter and a two-run single by Coop Cooper, with eight different Wolves picking up an RBI in the inning.

Freshman Aiden O’Neill capped the 12-run explosion by flying home to score on a wild pitch, making it 15-1, while the scorekeeper lost feeling in their writing hand.

Coupeville coasted in from there, tacking on a two-run single from Peyton Caveness in the fourth and an RBI single from Johnny Porter in the fifth.

While the Wolves played whack-a-mole with Concrete’s pitching, the CHS hurlers were almost as dominating.

Camden Glover whiffed four in two innings of work, then turned the ball over to Valenzuela, who closed with three no-hit frames while setting five down on strikes.

Wolf coach Steve Hilborn got action for everyone on the bench, with Seth Woollet, Jaje Drake, and foreign exchange student Piotr Bieda picking up at-bats.

Falcons rally late, edge Wolves

Missed it … by that much.

The Coupeville High School varsity baseball squad stranded too many runners Wednesday in Langley, leaving host South Whidbey a chance to rally late for a 4-2 win.

The non-conference loss snaps a five-game winning streak for the Wolves, who tumble to 9-4 on the season.

With the victory, the Falcons even their mark at 7-7 and earn a split in the season series, after Coupeville clobbered them 13-2 in the season opener.

This time around the Wolves had plenty of chances to blow the game open, but left runners aboard in each of the first five innings.

Trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, South Whidbey finally broke through thanks to Coupeville’s lone error and a two-out RBI double from Tyson Henry.

With Falcon hurlers retiring the final nine Wolf hitters, the hosts capitalized on their chances in the sixth, pushing three runners across to claim the lead for the first time.

Three walks jammed the basepaths, with a Josh Sterba sac fly knotting things up at 2-2.

Coupeville was an out away from escaping, but Grady Davis delivered the game-buster, launching a two-out, two-run double to center to knife the Wolves.

The game opened as a pitcher’s duel, with CHS hurler Coop Cooper carrying a shutout through the first four innings.

The freshman flinger whiffed six Falcons and didn’t surrender a hit until the third, but his own team struggled to provide run support.

The Wolves stranded four runners through the first three frames, before finally breaking through to score in the top of the fourth.

Starting with the bases loaded and no outs after a Camden Glover double, a Peyton Caveness single, and Cooper being plunked by a pitch, things were looking explosive.

But while CHS did score twice, forcing in a run when Aiden O’Neill was hit by another pitch, and netting another tally off of a Scott Hilborn smash to third base, the Wolves offense sputtered out after that.

Other than a Jack Porter walk to open the fifth, Coupeville came up empty across the final three innings.

While the Wolves outhit the Falcons 4-3, South Whidbey walked 10 times to Coupeville’s five free passes.

The CHS hardball squad gets an immediate chance to fix that, as it plays its third game in as many days Thursday, when it hosts Mount Vernon Christian.

That game pits the top two teams in the Northwest 2B/1B League, with MVC sitting at 9-0 in conference action, and Coupeville right behind them at 7-1.

First pitch is 4:00 PM at Robert Sherman Field.
