They’re getting hot at the right time.

Riding a late-season hot streak, the Coupeville 6th grade boys’ SWISH basketball squad nipped Ferndale 37-33 Saturday to seize control of their own playoff destiny.

With one game left in the regular season — Saturday, Feb. 28 against Burlington-Edison — the Wolves sit at 4-3.

Win their finale and they get a playoff opener against Friday Harbor, a team currently on a four-game losing skid.

Facing off with a tough Ferndale team, Coupeville fought valiantly through a game that saw seven lead changes.

The final switch came when the Wolves went on a 6-0 tear to go in front 20-17. After that, they never relinquished the lead again.

Jake Mitten was a beast, dropping 17 points, snatching 12 rebounds, making off with two steals and rejecting a pair of shots, despite being tied to the bench for a third of the game with foul trouble.

Matthew Kelley (11 points, seven rebounds, five assists, four steals), Sage Downes (six points, four steals), Daniel Olson (three points, three assists and two steals) filled up the stat sheet in support.

While they didn’t score, Dakota Eck, Alex Jimenez and Erik Webster “were animals on defense and controlled the paint down low,” said coach Pat Kelley.

Logan Downes, playing against guys three grades older than he is, “was instrumental in the final two minutes of press defense, preventing Ferndale from scoring or controlling the ball.”

Michael Laska and Raimee Anderson chipped in with stellar ‘d,’ helping to lead the attack on the ball at mid court, forcing several turnovers.

With one game to play, nine of the ten players on the roster have scored, led by Kelley (65 points), Sage Downes (63), Mitten (48), and Olson (44).

The Wolves have combined for 238 points (34 a game) and 175 rebounds.

Kelley has 78 rebounds and 27 steals, followed by Mitten (64, 18), Sage Downes (29, 27) and Olson (24, 14).

“I hate double headers for this very reason. Bad enough playing early in the morning.”

Coming off a huge opening win over a talented Arlington squad that dropped down a division in search of a title, the Coupeville 6th grade boys’ SWISH basketball team ran out of steam in its second game Saturday.

The ensuing 31-24 loss to a tall Friday Harbor squad gave the Wolves a split on the day (they bounced Arlington 31-28) and left coach Pat Kelley with the slight case of the grumbles captured in the opening quote.

Still, Coupeville sits at 2-1 in an ultra-competitive division, with games against Sedro-Woolley and Ferndale up next on the schedule.

The Wolves opened play Saturday firing on all cylinders, shooting out to a 10-2 lead on Arlington.

“They ran into a buzz saw, being a very talented Coupeville squad,” Kelley said.

The game settled into a back-and-forth rhythm after that, with the two teams swapping out leads until Coupeville put the game on ice in the final two minutes.

A bit ragged after a tough game, the Wolves had to hop right back on the floor — it was their only doubleheader of the season — and they struggled in the early going against a fresh Friday Harbor team.

Coupeville rallied late behind Matthew Kelley, Daniel Olson, Jake Mitten and Sage Downes, but time ran out on them.

Cold-blooded closers.

The fast-rising stars who grace the roster for Coupeville’s 6th grade SWISH boys’ basketball squad know how to put a game away.

Clinging to a four-point lead in the third quarter Saturday in their season-opening game in Mount Vernon, the Wolves suddenly clicked a switch.

Boom! 13-3 run to slam the door shut and a 37-23 victory over Orcas Island.

Better yet, the young Wolves, who hit the boards with authority, spread the offensive glory around, with four different players getting in the score-book.

Matthew Kelley paced Coupeville with a game-high 18, while Daniel Olson banked in nine, including a long-range bomb from three point land.

Sage Downes dropped in six, Jake Mitten popped for two and Coupeville picked up a basket for free when their opponents accidentally scored on the wrong basket.

swish

Yep, this team is ready for its close-up.

The future of Wolf boys’ basketball is on its way and it includes my former “assistant manager.”

During my years at David’s DVD Den (2007-2009), Daniel Olson would camp out behind the counter and operate the computer and cash drawer whenever his family came to the store.

Jump forward five years and Olson is now a sixth grader(!) at Coupeville Middle School (older brother Ben is a freshman on the high school JV squad) and a fast-rising b-ball star.

This season the younger Olson is joining a batch of other hot-shooting hoops wizards on a Coupeville SWISH basketball team.

The squad, which is made up of nine sixth-graders and one precocious, fast-dribbling third grader (Logan Downes), is in its third week of practice. The first game is Jan. 10.

The roster includes Olson, Logan Downes, older brother Sage Downes, Jake Mitten, Erik Webster, Michael Laska, Alex Jimenez, Matthew Kelley, Dakota Eck and Raymond Anderson.

With the exception of the younger Downes, everyone on the roster has at least four seasons of ball under their belts.

Kelley, who played for an 8-4 Oak Harbor team last year, is the seasoned vet, entering his seventh season.

Current CHS freshman (and big brothers) Hunter Downes and Ben Olson help coach the team when they have a break in their own basketball schedule.
