Dads dig the long ball, which is why Hailey Hammer loves to mash home runs.

Get out the rye bread and mustard, Grandma, it’s grand salami time!

The words of longtime Mariners announcer Dave Niehaus echoed across the Northwest once again Thursday, as former Wolf Hailey Hammer pounded a grand slam in her college softball game.

Hammer, a sophomore at Everett Community College, connected in game two of a doubleheader sweep of Skagit Valley, as the Trojans opened Northwest Athletic Conference play.

Everett shredded the Cardinals 7-3 and 10-0.

Hammer’s homer was a game-winner, though no one knew it at the moment.

The game was knotted in a scoreless tie and the bags were juiced when she locked on to a pitch and smashed all the hopes and dreams of the SVC pitcher.

With the sweep, Everett improved to 4-7 overall, 2-0 in league play.

In there banging with the big boys.

Following in the footsteps of fellow former Wolf Hunter Hammer, Coupeville High School grad Dalton Martin made a strong debut as a college thrower.

Martin, the only athlete in the 117-year history of CHS to win three throwing medals at the same state meet, is a freshman at Everett Community College.

Competing in the Pacific Lutheran Open Saturday, he finished fifth in a field of 18 throwers, launching the discus 137 feet.

During his days as a Wolf, Martin played football, basketball, tennis and track.

He finished 5th at state in the discus as a junior, then claimed 2nd as a senior.

Martin also notched 8th place state finishes in the shot put and javelin during his final campaign.

The last feat was a true dazzler, as he threw the javelin for the first time in competition just six weeks prior to state, and increased his PR 20 feet in just 44 days.

The regular season hasn’t even started and already Hailey Hammer’s bat is warmed up.

The Coupeville High School grad teed off all day Friday, bashing four extra-base hits, including an epic home run, in a preseason double header with Grays Harbor.

Before going yard, she smacked three doubles.

“Today was a good day!,” said a jubilant Hammer.

A 12-time letter winner (volleyball, basketball, softball) during her storied Wolf career, she’s a sophomore at Everett Community College.

During her first season as a Trojan, Hammer was limited by injuries, playing in 12 games, but still hit a crisp .300 at the plate.

EVCC, which ten-runned Grays Harbor in both games, opens the regular season Feb. 25.

The end of the road comes for all athletes.

For former Coupeville High School softball stars Madeline Roberts and Hailey Hammer, this past weekend marked the end of different stages of their college careers.

Roberts, who was on crutches at the end after suffering an injury, marked the end of her two-year run as a Dolphin with Sophomore Night festivities at Shoreline Community College.

Meanwhile, Hammer, a freshman, saw the regular season roll to a close at Everett Community College.

Shoreline is 16-16 overall, 10-10 in league play, while Everett is 16-20, 9-11.

The two teams advance to play in the postseason, though Roberts will likely be out due to a possible ACL injury.

Both Wolf grads put in strong work during their respective seasons, as the duo comprised 50% of Coupeville’s college diamond dandies.

Ben Etzell, a sophomore at Saint John’s University and Monica Vidoni, a freshman at Rainy River Community College, both played in Minnesota this season.

Vidoni’s season is done, while Etzell and the Johnnies baseball squad are off to the NCAA D-3 playoffs later this week.

Hammer is hitting .283 with 17 hits, including a home run and a pair of doubles.

She’s racked up seven RBI, scored nine runs, walked six times and seen action in 24 games.

Roberts has appeared in 21 games, compiling nine hits (including a double), five walks, four steals and three RBI.

Don’t hurt ’em, Hammer!

Too late.

In a college softball game Sunday that featured a match-up between former Coupeville High School teammates, Hailey Hammer had the last laugh.

Now a freshman at Everett Community College, Hammer went yard in the top of the seventh, blasting a fences-clearing solo shot to lift her squad to a 1-0 win against host Shoreline CC.

On the other side of the field, her former Wolf running mate, Madeline Roberts, now a sophomore for the Dolphins.

Both teams are now 4-2 in Northwest Athletic Conference play, putting them in a second-place tie behind Bellevue (5-1).

Everett is 9-9 overall, while Shoreline is 8-6.

Hammer’s long ball, her first as a college player, caught her a bit by surprise.

“Right over center field, it barely felt like I hit it far!,” she said with a laugh.
