Wolf senior shines in final spotlight

He made his final moments count.

While Coupeville’s Landon Roberts is playing American Legion ball this summer, and hopes to continue his hardball adventures in college, Wednesday night put an official cap on his time as a high school baseball star.

The Wolf senior repped the red and black in the Northwest Senior Feeder Games in Anacortes, playing well on both sides of the ball.

The event, which featured a doubleheader at Alton R. Daniels Field, is one of the precursors to the All-State games in Yakima.

Roberts earned four innings of field time in each feeder game, patrolling right field in the opener and center field in the finale.

At the plate, the Wolf ace rapped a double off an Anacortes hurler.

In the field, he had plenty of time to enjoy the scenery, finally getting a ball sent his way at the very end.

Fielding it smoothly, Roberts pulled in the fly ball for the night’s final out, officially putting a stamp on his CHS diamond career.

The feeder games drew seniors from a wide range of schools in the region, with La Conner’s CJ Edwards being the only other player from the Northwest 2B/1B League.

South Whidbey (Sage Northup and Grady Davis) and Oak Harbor (Jayson Champignon and Brayden Rupp) also sent two players each to the hardball festivities.

Caveness earns big game finale

One final honor for the diamond dog.

Coupeville High School senior Peyton Caveness was tabbed to play in an All-State baseball feeder game, joining an exclusive list of Wolves to receive the call over the years.

His last swings in the spotlight came in Anacortes Thursday.

Caveness opened the game at first base for a couple of innings, then moved behind the plate to catch the rest of the way.

At the plate, the Wolf standout was part of an offense which carved up rival pitching in a 15-1 win.

The all-star game capped a stellar four-year run of high school baseball for Caveness.

He was a First-Team All-Conference pick by Northwest 2B/1B League coaches as a senior, pacing the Wolves in most offensive categories.

Coupeville’s primary catcher, Caveness also saw time on the mound as a pitcher and helped anchor the infield when needed.

Wolf duo dazzle on diamond

One more time on the diamond, but with a twist.

Coupeville High School seniors Jonathan Valenzuela and Scott Hilborn were on opposing teams Thursday night in Anacortes.

The duo played in the Northwest Regional Feeder All-Star Games, one of a series of events held to decide players picked to participate in the All-State series June 23-25 in Yakima.

Drawing from a pool of 300 players from across all classifications (4A-1B), invites will go out to 72 diamond men when rosters are set June 5.

Thursday night, Hilborn and Valenzuela suited up with players from 18 other schools, including a pair from next-door neighbor Oak Harbor.

Each team gets a Wolf of its own.

Other schools saw their players grouped together on the same team, but Coupeville’s stars landed on opposite sides, with Hilborn repping the American team and Valenzuela playing for the National squad.

Both won, with the American team pulling out a 5-3 victory in the opener, before the National lineup rebounded for a 4-1 triumph in the nightcap.

Hilborn pitched in the opener, tossing two innings on the mound, while also finding time to wear a pitch while being plunked.

Game two saw Valenzuela playing second base and eking out a walk at the plate, while his CHS classmate manned shortstop for the opposing squad.

Hilborn helped turn a pair of double plays, while also getting to gun down Valenzuela on a chopper to short.

The All-Star games come on the heels of standout seasons from the duo, who led Coupeville to a Northwest 2B/1B League title, a 17-6 record, and the program’s first win at the state tourney since 1987.

Wolves enjoy baseball swan song

Coupeville’s diamond men got one more night under the lights.

Four Wolf seniors — Dane Lucero, Shane Losey, Jake Pease, and Matt Hilborn — traveled to Bellingham Thursday to participate in the A/B All-State Baseball Feeder games.

While none of the pack made the cut for the big games, held June 8-9 in Yakima, Coupeville made a positive impression.

“They all played really well,” said CHS head baseball coach Chris Smith, who was in the stands at Joe Martin Stadium for the games. “Coupeville was well represented.”

After playing their entire prep careers as teammates, the four Wolves found themselves split up at times Thursday night.

In the opening game, the Nationals, which featured Lucero, Losey, and Hilborn topped Pease’s Americans squad 14-13 in a slug-fest.

Pease anchored third base for the entire game.

“He didn’t have a ton of opportunities, but did make some diving attempts at a couple smoked grounders,” said CHS assistant coach Aaron Lucero.

Hilborn got some work on the mound in the first game, tossing two innings, then moved to shortstop in the nightcap, where the Americans won 7-1 in a game called after six innings due to pitch counts.

“He was lights out at shortstop and had several outs to Dane at first,” Aaron Lucero said. “Lot of tough balls and threw lasers.”

Dane Lucero, who made a sensational full-body extension grab on a hard liner just inside the line at first, also pulled double duty.

After getting loosened up with his work on the bag, where he put in eight innings across the two games, the younger Lucero strolled over to pitch the fifth inning in game two.

Making sure every Wolf had some highlights, Losey was a beast in the outfield.

“Shane almost had a ridiculous awesome diving play in right that just missed by an inch or two,” Aaron Lucero said. “Was ecstatic he got to the ball, not to mention the dive.

“Next hitter hit another shot to right that Shane sprinted to, twisted, hit the ball with his glove, ball popped, and he caught the pop one-handed,” he added.

“The best part was his back was turned to the line ump, ump indicating fair and safe until Shane shows the ball with his back turned for the ump to reverse to an out.”

Diamond dreams live another day!!

The baseball season isn’t done yet for five Coupeville High School seniors.

While the Wolves were knocked out of the playoffs last week, Hunter Smith, Joey Lippo, Julian Welling, Nick Etzell and Jake Hoagland will get at least one more chance to step onto a diamond in uniform.

The five were selected for the first leg in the All-State baseball series.

They’ll travel to Bellingham May 31 to play in the 1A/B feeder games for the Northwest District at Joe Martin Field.

Two games will be played that night, with the first starting at 5 PM.

The large contingent of CHS players is a reward for the Wolves putting together their best win-loss record (15-6) in more than a decade.

Coupeville went 8-1 in Olympic League play, winning its second league crown in three seasons, then played three games at districts, falling a game short of the state playoffs.

After a series of 15 feeder games across the state finish, a field of 200+ seniors will be chopped down to 72, with players drawn from every classification, 1B to 4A.

Those players will form the four teams (Adams, St. Helens, Rainier and Baker) that play in the actual All-State games in Yakima June 9-10.

While Coupeville annually sends players to the feeder games, the last Wolf to make the final cut (and agree to play) in the All-State games was Ben Etzell, older brother of Nick.

He pitched for Team Adams in 2014, then enrolled at Saint John’s University in Minnesota, where he went on to play four years with the Johnnies.
