Once a season or so, former Wolf girls’ basketball guru Jackie Bykonen, now employed at 3A Meadowdale, returns to Whidbey when the Mavericks travel to Oak Harbor.

Monday night was this year’s match-up and travelin’ photo man John Fisken was up in his natural habitat at OHHS.

Presto. New photos of a former Wolf now sportin’ new colors.

Tradition upheld.

You can move off Whidbey Island, but you can never really get away.

Friday night, former Coupeville High School girls’ basketball coach Jackie Bykonen came back to the Island — well, the North end at least.

Now a coach with Meadowdale, a 3A school in the Western Conference, she was in town to help the Mavericks keep Oak Harbor winless.

Meadowdale withstood a third quarter charge from the Wildcats and escaped town with a 61-53 win.

The Mavericks are 5-9, while OHHS sits at 0-12. Bykonen’s former squad currently sits at 6-6.
