Scrappy Wolves pounce on Braves

Road, sweet, road.

The Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball squad has played some of its best games away from its own gym this season, and Wednesday night was a prime example.

Leading from start to finish, Kassie O’Neil’s band of road warriors held off host La Conner, claiming a solid 28-22 win.

The victory lifts Coupeville’s young guns to 2-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-5 overall, heading into another road tussle Friday against Mount Vernon Christian.

Wednesday’s rumble in La Conner was close for a quarter, with the Wolves clinging to a 4-3 lead after a defensive-minded opening eight minutes.

But then O’Neil turned Madison McMillan loose, and CHS made its move.

The Wolf sophomore knocked down seven of her game-high nine points in the second frame, with Teagan Calkins and Bryley Gilbert chipping in as Coupeville busted things open with a 10-5 run.

Up 14-8 heading into the second half, the Wolves pushed their advantage out to 20-11 by the end of the third, then held on as La Conner rallied late.

McMillan’s nine-point effort led a well-balanced offensive attack, with Desi Ramirez-Vasquez going off for all eight of her points after halftime.

Kierra Thayer banked in four points in support of the duo, with Carlota Marcos-Cabrillo (2), Jada Heaton (2), Calkins (2), and Gilbert (1) rounding out the scorers.

Reese Wilkinson, Brynn Parker, Kayla Arnold, Kassidy Upchurch, Skylar Parker, and Liza Zustiak also saw floor time for the Wolves, who won for the third time on the road this season.

Wolves, Bulldogs tangle on hardwood

Fear no opponent.

Facing off with 3A Mount Vernon Friday in Oak Harbor, the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball squad came within a three-ball of sending the game to overtime.

While the Wolves fell 28-25, Kassie O’Neil’s squad proved they can be competitive with just about anyone.

And they did so without two key players, as Madison McMillan and Jada Heaton remained in Coupeville with the Wolf varsity.

Friday’s fractured schedule was made possible by Darrington not having a JV girls’ team.

So, while Coupeville’s varsity played in front of its home fans, the Wolf JV struck out on their own.

Traipsing 10 miles up the Island, they squared off with Mount Vernon’s C-Team, while the big school’s varsity and JV played host Oak Harbor.

The Wolves, now 4-5 after the non-conference loss, also pick up a second game with the Bulldogs.

The teams square off again Jan. 26, this time in Mount Vernon.

Coupeville’s JV rejoins its varsity counterparts this week, travelling to La Conner Wednesday, Jan. 18 and Mount Vernon Christian two days later.

Young Wolves on the prowl

Change the rules, they’ll still find a way to win.

Playing a shorter than normal game Saturday, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball squad swept to its fourth straight victory thanks to balanced scoring and feisty defense.

Playing deep on the road, the young Wolves stormed past host Neah Bay 39-28 in a contest made up of six-minute quarters instead of the usual eight-minute frames.

The decision to trim a quarter of the normal running time was made for several reasons.

The Wolves were a little late arriving, Neah Bay has only one court, and the schools needed to get three games, including two varsity bouts, played before Coupeville had to hightail it in hopes of catching the night’s last ferry.

Adjusting well to the compromise, the JV boys began to pull away in the second quarter en route to running their record to 5-3.

Coming off the non-conference win over Neah Bay, the Wolves face off with Northwest 2B/1B League rivals La Conner and Mount Vernon Christian next week.

Both games are on the road, but at locales much closer.

With their game up first — Neah Bay doesn’t have a JV girls’ team — Coupeville’s young guns battled to a 10-10 tie after an abbreviated first quarter.

Hunter Bronec banged away for seven of his team-high 13 points in the opening frame, while Aiden O’Neill popped the first of a pair of three-balls he hit against the Red Devils.

Coupeville took control of the game thanks to an 11-6 surge in the second quarter, with O’Neill swishing another trey, then pushed the lead out to 30-22 heading into the final six-minute stretch.

Pushing the momentum, Hunter Smith’s squad of attack-happy snipers poured in the first nine points in the fourth quarter, before Neah Bay netted a pair of late three-balls to trim the final margin down a bit.

But just a bit.

With his 13 points, Hunter Bronec led the way for a team which put nine guys into the scoring column.

O’Neill (6), Camden Glover (5), Jack Porter (4), Chase Anderson (4), Landon Roberts (2), Malachi Somes (2), Johnny Porter (2), and Hurlee Bronec (1) also kept the scorekeeper busy.

Carson Field and Yohannon Sandles also saw floor time for the Wolves, as Smith got minutes for everyone on the roster.

No quit, forever scrappy

They got stronger as the night progressed.

Facing off with visiting Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday, the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball squad played the Hurricanes virtually even in the second half.

Unfortunately for the Wolves, a slow start doomed them in a 31-16 loss.

The defeat, which snaps a two-game win streak for Kassie O’Neil’s squad, drops them to 4-4 on the season.

Coupeville only converted one field goal in the first half and that stung, as it fell behind 9-1 after one quarter of play, and 19-5 at the half.

Things got better after the break however, with Kierra Thayer tossing in five points in the third frame and the Wolves only being edged 12-11 across the game’s final 16 minutes.

Thayer finished with a team-high seven points, while Liza Zustiak (2), Skylar Parker (2), Reese Wilkinson (2), Carlota Marcos-Cabrillo (1), Madison McMillan (1), and Kayla Arnold (1) also scored.

Brynn Parker, Teagan Calkins, Jada Heaton, Bryley Gilbert, Kassidy Upchurch, and Desi Ramirez-Vasquez also saw floor time for the Wolves, as O’Neil juggled a 13-woman roster.

Coupeville’s JV girls go their own way in their next outing, heading up to Oak Harbor High School Friday night.

The Wolves will be the “home” team and face off with the C-Team from 3A Mount Vernon in a game scheduled to tip-off at 5:40 PM.

Coupeville’s varsity hosts Darrington Friday and travels to Neah Bay Saturday, but neither of those schools has a JV girls’ team.

Balanced attack, strong win

Play as a pack, win as a pack.

Spreading its offense between seven players Tuesday, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball squad overcame a red-hot rival.

Mount Vernon Christian freshman Jake Feddema rattled the rims for a game-high 24 points, but the host Wolves still came out on top, rolling to a 41-37 win.

Coupeville’s third-straight victory, it lifts Hunter Smith’s squad to 4-3 on the season.

The Wolves countered Feddema by spreading the ball out, with different players stepping up at different times.

In the opening quarter, it was CHS fab frosh Chase Anderson, who banked in seven of his team-high 11 points as Coupeville built a 12-7 lead.

The Wolves stretched their advantage out to 23-16 at the half, watched as MVC narrowed its deficit to 34-30 after three quarters, then cruised in for the win.

Aiden O’Neill knocked down a pair of second-half three-balls to push his scoring total out to 10 points, while Camden Glover banged away down low for eight.

Hunter Bronec (4), Landon Roberts (4), Hurlee Bronec (3), and Johnny Porter (1) rounded out Coupeville’s scoring, while Malachi Somes and Jack Porter also saw floor time.

The Wolf JV returns to action Saturday with a trip to Neah Bay for a non-conference clash.

While Coupeville’s varsity hosts Darrington Friday in a Northwest 2B/1B League tilt, the Loggers don’t have a second team this season.
