Cubs get hot, Wolves go cold

Too many runs.

The Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball squad survived one 11-0 tear by visiting Sedro-Woolley Thursday night.

The second time it happened, however, the Wolves didn’t recover.

Unable to stop a high-flying Sedro offense, Coupeville saw a one-point game turn into something much more like a rout, eventually falling 69-39.

The non-conference loss drops the Wolves to 1-3, with a road game Saturday at Forks next up on the schedule.

Coupeville struck first Thursday, with freshman Aiden O’Neill taking the ball end-to-end for a flying layup.

But then, in the blink of an eye, the visitors responded with a three-ball, kicking off a run of 11 straight points.

The Wolves recovered, step by step, slowing down the game by crashing to the hoop and getting free throws.

Chase Anderson rippled the nets for four charity shots, while Hunter Bronec added a fifth, and CHS chipped the deficit back to 18-9 by the first break.

Playing their best ball of the night, the Wolves jumped on the Cubs as the second quarter started, pulling within 20-19 after Camden Glover knocked down a short jumper in the paint.

That capped a 10-2 Coupeville surge, with Glover and both Hunter and Hurlee Bronec coming up big.

But, as quickly as the momentum shifted to the Wolves, it washed away, and this time when Sedro put the hammer down, it put it down for good.

The game’s second 11-0 run stretched the margin back to double-digits and a couple of late three-balls from the visitors helped them eventually carve out a 39-26 advantage by halftime.

The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair, but Coupeville never again got the deficit under 10, and a 19-3 Sedro rampage in the final frame made the score look worse than it really was.

The Wolves did spread their own offensive attack out, with O’Neill dropping a team-high 11 points.

Hunter Bronec (8), Anderson (6), Hurlee Bronec (5), Glover (4), Jack Porter (3), and Landon Roberts (2) also scored for CHS.

Mikey Robinett, Carson Field, Malachi Somes, Johnny Porter, and Yohannon Sandles rounded out the active roster for CHS coach Hunter Smith.

Wolf young guns stay scrappy

Future hoops stars, working hard to bring that Halloween candy home.

The odds were better than the evens.

Facing off with visiting Sultan Saturday, the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball squad put together its best effort in the first and third quarters.

Unfortunately, the Turks stung the Wolves in frames two and four, sending Kassie O’Neil’s team to a 42-23 loss.

The non-conference defeat drops the CHS young guns to 1-2 heading into their final week of games before the Christmas break.

While Coupeville’s varsity girls have five games left to play in the tail end of 2022, that includes a varsity-only contest with Crescent and two games at an Eastern Washington tournament.

The JV girls travel to Sedro-Woolley Dec. 15 and Forks Dec. 17, and don’t play at home again until Jan. 4, when they kick off three straight games in their own gym.

Playing in front of their home fans Saturday, the Wolves hung tough in the early going, trailing just 7-3 at the first break.

Sultan used a 13-4 run in the second frame to pad its halftime lead to 20-7, but Coupeville responded with its best offensive performance of the night.

With Madison McMillan and Jada Heaton each rumbling for six points in the third quarter, the Wolves outscored the Turks 14-12 to stay combative until the end.

McMillan paced CHS with a game-high 12 points, while Heaton banked in seven and the duo of Kayla Arnold and Reese Wilkinson added a bucket apiece.

Kassidy Upchurch, Brynn Parker, Liza Zustiak, Desi Ramirez-Vasquez, and Skylar Parker also saw floor time for the Wolves.

JV boys go toe-to-toe with Turks

Just out of range.

The Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball squad hung tough all game Saturday but couldn’t quite catch up to visiting Sultan.

The Turks hit just enough shots down the stretch to maintain their lead, eventually heading back to the bus with a 59-49 win.

The non-conference loss drops the Wolves to 1-2 on the season, with two games on the schedule for next week.

Coupeville’s JV boys host Sedro-Woolley Thursday, Dec. 15, then travel to Forks two days later.

After that, the CHS young guns are off until Jan. 6, when they return to their own gym to host Orcas Island in the Northwest 2B/1B League opener.

Saturday night, Hunter Smith’s squad was down just 14-11 at the end of the first quarter, before Sultan pushed the halftime lead out to 38-30.

A modest 10-9 run in the third quarter, with four different Wolves scoring, kept things reasonable, but Sultan closed effectively, racking up a 12-9 advantage in the final frame.

Freshman Chase Anderson led Coupeville, banging away for a season-high 17 points and scoring in each quarter.

He rippled the net for a three-ball as well.

Johnny Porter and Aiden O’Neill chipped in with nine points apiece to back Anderson, while Camden Glover and Hurlee Bronec each banked home six.

Coupeville’s final bucket came courtesy Landon Roberts, with Malachi Somes, Jack Porter, and Mikey Robinett also seeing floor time for the Wolves.

It was the season debut for Glover and Roberts.

JV girls hone shooting skills

Celebrate the positives.

While the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball team wasn’t able to upend large school rival Lakewood Saturday, the Wolves proved to be sharpshooters at the free-throw line.

CHS, a 2B school, fell 52-22 to the Cougars, who rep a 2A institution, but won the battle at the charity stripe.

Led by sophomore Madison McMillan, who banked in eight free throws, Coupeville claimed the advantage at the line, converting 12 bonus shots.

Bryley Gilbert, Kierra Thayer, and Desi Ramirez-Vasquez also netted free throws for the Wolves, with Gilbert a pristine 2-2.

Coupeville’s downfall in its home opener came because Lakewood was hitting a lot of shots from everywhere else.

The Cougars bolted out to a 10-0 lead by the first break, stretched it to 16-4 at the half, then coasted home with a solid second-half performance.

The Wolves popped for 11 points in the third quarter, however, making their best show of the game and keeping things interesting.

McMillan paced CHS with 10 points, while Reese Wilkinson powered her way to a season-high six in support.

Gilbert (2), Teagan Calkins (2), Ramirez-Vasquez (1), and Thayer (1) rounded out the scorers, with Liza Zustiak, Kayla Arnold, Brynn Parker, Kassidy Upchurch, Jada Heaton, and Skylar Parker also seeing floor time.

The Wolves, who sit at 1-1 in non-conference play, return to the court this Saturday, Dec. 10, when they host Sultan.

Tipoff for the JV girls is 4:45 PM.

JV boys romp to rivalry win

The young guns were firing on all cylinders.

Peppering host South Whidbey Wednesday, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball team romped to a 62-46 win in the season opener for both teams.

Under the watchful eye of head coach Hunter Smith, the Wolves roared out to a big lead, before coasting home for the Island rivalry triumph.

With six different players knocking down buckets in the opening frame, CHS surged to an 18-3 lead by the end of the first quarter, driving a stake through the heart of Falcon Nation.

South Whidbey rallied a bit after that, (slightly) cutting the margin to 27-14 at the half, but the Wolves had an answer at every turn.

A 17-16 edge in the third quarter kept the lead at 44-30, before sophomore sensation Hunter Bronec threw down 10 of his game-high 20 points in the final period to seal the deal.

Seven Wolves etched their names in the scorebook, with Chase Anderson banking in 11 points and Hurlee Bronec rippling the nets for 10 more.

Aiden O’Neill (9), Johnny Porter (8), Carson Field (2), and Jack Porter (2) rounded out the offensive attack, while Yohannon Sandles, Mikey Robinett, and Malachi Somes also saw floor time for Coupeville.

The young Wolves get right back at it Saturday when they host Lakewood in another non-conference tilt, with the JV boys tipping at 5:15 PM.
