The effort was there, but the rim was unforgiving.

Unable to get a bucket to drop for much of the first half Tuesday, the Coupeville High School JV girls basketball team found itself in a hole against visiting Mount Vernon Christian.

And while the Wolves rallied late, turning their defensive prowess into offensive opportunities, they couldn’t catch the Hurricanes, falling 38-18.

The loss drops Coupeville’s second squad to 1-3 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 1-5 overall.

The tale of the game early on was the Wolves using a scrappy defense to thwart MVC, only to see their own shots kick back off the rim.

Madison McMillan banked in a layup in the waning moments of the first quarter, but that was the only field goal CHS netted before halftime.

Trailing just 4-2 at the first break, the Wolves slipped behind 16-5 heading into the locker room, with late free throws from Brooklyn Thayer and Katie Marti their only other points.

Things perked up in the second half, however, with Coupeville putting together its best offensive showing of the night in the third quarter.

McMillan knocked down back-to-back buckets, Thayer converted off of an offensive rebound, and two Wolves teamed up for the prettiest basket of the game.

Trapped in the corner, with the defense hanging all over her, Kayla Arnold kicked a pass out over the crowd to the waiting Katie Marti, who promptly drained a three-ball which softly rustled the net as it descended.

The second sweetest bucket for the Wolves came in the fourth, with Marti feeding Jada Heaton, and the fab frosh slicing ‘n dicing the defense on the way to her first high school points.

Marti and McMillan paced CHS with six points apiece, with Thayer (4) and Heaton (2) also getting into the scoring column.

Skylar Parker, Bryley Gilbert, Arnold, Desi Ramirez-Vasquez, Reese Wilkinson, Candace Meek, and Yodnum Nakakul all saw floor time for the Wolves, who are now off until Jan. 19.

There’s a learning curve.

With six freshmen and six sophomores, the Coupeville High School JV boys basketball team is a young squad still fine-tuning its game.

Tuesday night’s tilt with visiting Mount Vernon Christian is a perfect example.

The Wolves, playing for only the second time in a month thanks to bad weather, the holidays, and the pandemic, fell 43-39 to the Hurricanes.

But that score doesn’t really reflect the wild twists and turns experienced by a Coupeville team which now sits at 1-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 1-4 overall.

The Wolves came out ice cold, almost got run off the floor to begin things, then got sizzlin’ hot and roared all the way back from a 17-point deficit to reclaim the lead.

Only to see the game slip away in the waning moments thanks to an unbelievable MVC advantage at the free throw line.

In the end, veteran CHS coach Randy Bottorff was left to softly shake his head as he reflected on the battle royal while standing in a now-quiet gym.

“They’re getting there,” he said. “Some bumps along the way, but they’re learning.”

MVC blew out to a 17-8 lead after one quarter of play, raining down buckets from all directions on the Wolves.

But this Coupeville squad is a resilient one, and it went right back to work, flipping the score on the Hurricanes in the next frame.

Nick Guay went off for five points in the second quarter, including draining a three-ball, and CHS got scoring from six different players during its own 17-8 tear.

With the game knotted at 25-25 at the half, Coupeville pushed ahead in the third quarter thanks to the wham-bam combo of Guay and Hunter Bronec, who combined to outscore MVC 10-7.

But the win wasn’t to be, as the Hurricanes repeatedly went to the foul line down the stretch, using an 11-4 run to close the game and keep their record spotless.

MVC hit 17 of 25 at the free throw stripe in the game, while Coupeville was … 0-1.

Owen Heinze, who paced Mount Vernon with 17 points, was 11-13 himself on charity shots, and the Wolves couldn’t overcome the disparity.

“They were strong enough to get to the line, and we weren’t,” Bottorff said. “We’ll keep working on getting the guys to move their feet on defense, and not get caught reaching.”

Hunter Bronec finished with a team-high 12 points for Coupeville, while Guay banked in 11 and Zane Oldenstadt knocked down six.

Hurlee Bronec (4), Carson Field (2), Ryan Blouin (2), and Mikey Robinett (2) also scored for the Wolves, with Landon Roberts, William Davidson, Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim, and Jack Porter also seeing floor time.

Undefeated in the new year.

Kicking off 2022 with a vengeance, the Coupeville High School JV boys basketball team throttled visiting La Conner 40-14 Tuesday night.

The victory, coming after a three-week holiday layoff, lifts the Wolves to 1-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 1-3 overall.

It was a solid team effort across the board, with 12 players seeing action, and half of those dropping in points as Coupeville ran away from the Braves.

Up just 7-3 at the end of the first quarter, the Wolves used a 12-4 run in the second frame to push the advantage out where La Conner wouldn’t be able to touch it.

Then, just to make sure, CHS clamped down big time in the third quarter, with Nick Guay tossing in six points during a game-busting 16-1 tear.

Ryan Blouin and Hunter Bronec paced the Wolves, with both parts of the duo knocking down 11 points.

Mikey Robinett and Guay backed them up with six apiece, while Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim banked in four, and Zane Oldenstadt rounded out the offensive attack with a bucket.

Coupeville also got strong play from Landon Roberts, Hurlee Bronec, Jack Porter, William Davidson, Carson Field, and Johnny Porter, with every Wolf bringing the heat to help nab the W.

It slipped away.

Unable to hold on to a lead late, the Coupeville High School JV girls basketball team fell just short Friday night at Mount Vernon Christian.

Up by six points headed into the fourth quarter, the young Wolves were outscored 14-2 in the final frame, setting the final deficit at 35-29.

The loss drops Coupeville to 1-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 1-3 overall, heading into the holiday break.

MVC’s second squad is a perfect 4-0 after escaping from the Wolves.

With Saturday’s games at South Whidbey postponed, CHS doesn’t hit the floor again for a game until Jan. 4.

Friday, the Wolves were in control of the game for much of the night, jumping out to a 10-4 lead at the first break.

MVC closed the gap to 18-15 by halftime, but Coupeville asserted itself with a 9-6 run in the third quarter.

Unfortunately for the Wolves, that was where the buckets stopped dropping.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes rode a big fourth-quarter performance from sophomore Kiera Link, who went off for 10 of her game-high 14 points in the final eight minutes.

Freshman Katie Marti paced Coupeville with 10 points, including a pair of three-balls, while Gwen Gustafson knocked down eight, and Madison McMillan rippled the nets for six.

Nezi Keiper (3) and Reese Wilkinson (2) rounded out the scoring, with Mia Farris, Jada Heaton, Brooklyn Thayer, Kayla Arnold, Skylar Parker, Lyla Stuurmans, and Bryley Gilbert earning floor time.

They shuffled the roster, and lit up the scoreboard.

Coupeville High School swing players Gwen Gustafson and Lyla Stuurmans made their first JV appearance Saturday, combining with Madison McMillan to form a formidable scoring machine.

Paced by the trio’s combined 26 points, the Wolves led from start to finish, polishing off host Orcas Island 41-23.

The win puts Coupeville’s young guns at 1-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 1-2 overall.

Saturday’s clash looked more like a nailbiter than a blowout after one quarter, with the Wolves clinging to just a 4-2 lead at the first break.

That changed, and quickly, as McMillan poured in eight points in the second frame, sparking CHS on a 17-9 run.

Also coming up big was Katie Marti, who banked in a three-ball en route to tallying five points during the game-busting streak.

Up 21-11 at the half, the Wolves stretched the lead out to 35-15 by the end of the third quarter, then coasted in for the victory.

McMillan paced Coupeville with 10 points, while Gustafson and Stuurmans recorded eight apiece.

Also getting in the book were Marti (5), Brooklyn Thayer (4), Desi Ramirez-Vasquez (2), Bryley Gilbert (2), and Kayla Arnold (2).

It was the first game for Thayer, and the fab frosh made an immediate impact on the boards as well.

Jada Heaton, Skylar Parker, Edie Bittner, Mia Farris, and Yodnum Nakakul all saw floor time for the Wolves, who have a bit of a break in their schedule.

Coupeville’s next foe, Concrete, doesn’t have a JV team, similar to what happened with Darrington Friday night.

That means the young Wolves are off the floor until next Friday, Dec. 17, when CHS travels to Mount Vernon Christian.

The JV also plays Dec. 18 — on the road at South Whidbey — then all Coupeville teams don’t play games again until Jan. 4.
