La Conner High School’s JV volleyball program hasn’t lost a league match in two decades-plus.

Yes, you read that right.

So, it comes as little surprise that the Braves came out on top Wednesday night in a battle of teams previously unbeaten in Northwest 2B/1B League action.

But, while La Conner’s second squad held off visiting Coupeville 25-17, 25-23, 25-17, the young Wolves exited the gym with some joy in their collective step.

They’re getting closer, and they refuse to bow down easily.

“It went really well! I’m super proud of the girls and how great they played tonight,” said Coupeville coach Ashley Menges.

“They went in firing, which quickly brought the competitiveness and energy we needed.

“You could see the spark in their eyes when they realized they can compete and they can be the big dogs, which was the highlight of my night for sure.”

Mia Farris keeps her eyes on the prize.

Even with the loss, the Wolf JV has the best win/loss record of any fall sports team at CHS, sitting at 7-2 overall, 6-1 in NWL play.

La Conner’s JV is 7-1 overall, 7-0 in league, with its only loss a narrow 2-1 defeat to 2A Sehome.

Coupeville heads back to its own gym for a stretch of practices, with its next match a road trip to Orcas Island Oct. 12.

The rematch with La Conner will be on Whidbey Oct. 19, and it’s one Menges and her spikers are already thinking about.

“Everyone had a really great game, everyone was fired up, and we’re excited to compete with them in our gym soon.”

You can cut their floor time, but you can’t stop them crushing you.

With the last ferry off of Friday Harbor sounding its whistle Tuesday, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball team didn’t get to play a full match.

But that didn’t matter, as the Wolves crushed their hosts quickly and efficiently during the time they had, strolling to a 25-8, 20-7 win.

The victory, the JV’s second in less than 24 hours, lifts them to 5-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 6-1 overall.

Coupeville took command at the service line and never let up, peppering the host Wolverines from every angle.

“It was good!,” said CHS coach Ashley Menges. “It was a night full of serving for the girls; stats will show that for sure.”

Six of the nine Wolves notched at least one ace, with Madison McMillan, Issabel Johnson, and Gwen Gustafson recording five apiece to pace the team.

Issabel Johnson cranks up the ace machine.

After a crush of games in a short stretch of days, Coupeville is off until next Tuesday, Oct. 5, when it hosts Concrete.

With her team back in practice mode over the next six days, Menges will continue to preach improvement and fine-tuning of skills.

“As we’re getting to the end of our first round playing the league, we’re gonna start challenging the girls to hold a standard,” she said.

“I’m wanting these girls to continue to have great games as they continue to progress in their skills.

“I’m proud of the accomplishments we’ve already made, but I’m even more excited for what’s to come.”

Tuesday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 1 assist, 3 aces
Mia Farris — 3 aces
Gwen Gustafson — 3 kills, 5 aces
Jada Heaton — 1 kill
Issabel Johnson — 5 aces

Aby Wood “played her best volleyball all season” Saturday in Oak Harbor. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

“I am a very happy coach, and we all had a blast today!”

Coupeville High School JV volleyball guru Ashley Menges got to witness her team play four matches at a tournament in Oak Harbor Saturday — all against schools with much-larger student bodies — and came away thrilled with much of what she saw.

“Oh man, today was crazy!,” she said. “The girls had a great morning!

“Honestly, every girl played so well all day that it’s hard to highlight just one.”

Coupeville, a 2B school, opened pool play against 4A Kamiak and split sets, winning the second one while “making little errors both sets.”

From there, the Wolves battled 1A powerhouse Lynden Christian and 2A Squalicum.

“They played so clean and really forced them to make the errors,” Menges said.

“They made them earn their points, that’s for sure.”

Whether they were winning or losing sets in pool play, the Wolves battled their big-city foes with ferocity.

“Overall, a very strong pool play,” Menges said. “The girls played some of their best volleyball all season.

“Serving was spot on, our serve receive was amazing, and we were just finding the court, letting the other teams make the mistakes.”

Minor injuries and lineup changes hurt Coupeville a bit in its tournament play opener, as the Wolves fell in straight-sets to 2A Anacortes, ending their day.

Mia Farris and the Wolf JV sparkled against big-school competition.

“The girls came into it with tons of energy, clean ball again, and really turned it around; even the ref was impressed!,” Menges said.

She praised Issabel Johnson for “some great serve receive passes, great serves, and even a handful of kills (yes, even as a libero…),” while noting Mia Farris and Jada Heaton “were clean on the net and got some great touches on the ball.

Madison (McMillan) and Gwen (Gustafson) were great both on the outside and in the back row today,” Menges added. “Katie (Marti) and Taylor (Brotemarkle) both delivered great sets all day, and Aby (Wood) played her best volleyball all season today.”

Coupeville returns to action this Monday, Sept. 27, when it hosts South Whidbey in a non-conference rumble.

JV starts at 4:30, varsity at 6:00.

Madison McMillan and Co. are 4-0 in league play.

Beware the hungry Wolves prowling the deep, dark woods.

Darrington High School welcomed Coupeville to town Wednesday, only to be chomped in the night’s JV volleyball match.

Jumping on the Loggers quickly, CHS coasted in for a 25-18, 25-17, 20-25 win.

The victory lifts Coupeville to 4-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 4-1 overall.

While she would have liked a clean sweep, Wolf coach Ashley Menges was mostly satisfied with how the evening played out.

“Definitely an interesting one,” she said. “There were definitely dips in focus and energy, which is a work in progress for us, but a lot of great things happened as well.

“I was grateful to see that the girls implemented what we worked on in practice yesterday,” Menges added. “But now our focus is going to be consistency all the way through a match, especially on the road.

“I’m still very happy that we pulled out the win, but we still have a lot to progress on as well.”

Coupeville had a very-balanced attack, with all nine girls in uniform racking up stats.

Libero Issabel Johnson was a particular standout.

Issabel had a great game tonight,” Menges said. “She was covering and digging a lot of balls that came her way, as well as her serve receive was very sharp tonight.”

Wednesday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 10 assists, 6 aces
Mia Farris — 2 kills, 1 ace
Gwen Gustafson — 4 kills, 6 digs, 2 aces
Jada Heaton — 2 kills, 1 dig
Issabel Johnson — 10 digs, 5 aces
Katie Marti — 7 kills, 2 digs, 10 assists, 2 aces
Madison McMillan — 7 kills, 1 dig, 1 assist, 6 aces
Grey Peabody — 2 kills

Consider it a bump in the road, with lessons learned.

At least that’s the hope for the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad, which dropped its first sets, and first match, Monday night.

Facing off with non-conference foe Cedar Park Christian-Bothell, the previously-undefeated Wolves fell 25-16, 25-13, 25-23 at home.

The loss drops Coupeville to 3-1 on the season, though it will get a chance to jump right back into action.

The Wolf JV heads to Darrington Wednesday for a Northwest 2B/1B League rumble, before appearing Saturday at a tourney in Oak Harbor.

The clash Monday with CPC reunited Coupeville with a former rival from the 1A North Sound Conference, and the private school spikers certainly played up to past performances.

Controlling the action most of the way, the visiting Eagles closed the first set on a 7-1 run to bust open what had been a fairly close battle.

Coupeville’s only lead in the first frame came at 2-1, but the Wolves did force three ties, the last at 8-8.

That came courtesy a zinger of a serve from Gwen Gustafson, the lone Wolf to put together a strong run at the service stripe in the early going.

Gustafson also had two of her team’s three biggest hits in the first set, launching a pair of sharply-angled kills to complement one by teammate Madison McMillan.

The second set may seem lopsided if you just look at the score, but Coupeville was in it for the first half, with six ties and a lead as late as 10-8.

Jada Heaton delivered a resounding kill which ripped down the middle of the court, rising up and smacking the crud out of the ball, to fuel the run.

Meanwhile, McMillan artfully dropped a pair of tip winners, and Grey Peabody stuffed a CPC hitter just as the Eagle was about to unload.

Madison McMillan (left) and Issabel Johnson both filled up the stat sheet.

Unfortunately, Cedar Park then hit a major hot streak, closing the set on a 17-3 tear to officially seal the win.

Despite the match being decided, the two teams had time to kill, so played a third set for practice, and it was a tense affair not decided until the final second.

Issabel Johnson, Mia Farris, and McMillan were sharp at the service line, with the latter running off six straight points to stake CHS to a 23-21 lead.

Cedar Park finally broke her run, however, then closed out the set and match for the sweep.

Monday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 1 dig, 11 assists, 1 ace
Mia Farris — 1 kill, 1 ace
Gwen Gustafson — 5 kills, 4 digs, 2 aces
Jada Heaton — 2 kills, 1 dig, 1 assist
Issabel Johnson — 6 digs, 2 aces
Madison McMillan — 4 kills, 6 digs, 4 aces
Grey Peabody — 2 kills, 1 solo block
Aby Wood  — 1 dig
