Consider it a very successful audition.

There will be eight open spots on next year’s Coupeville High School varsity volleyball roster, thanks to a large graduation.

So, all season long, whenever the Wolf JV spikers took the floor, they were playing for two things – to win, and to convince their coaches they will be ready to bounce up to the front-line squad next year.

Both boxes were checked, and in ink, not pencil.

Polishing off host Sultan 25-20, 25-17, 25-17 Monday, the CHS young guns closed their season at 8-2 in North Sound Conference play, 11-3 overall.

Their only losses were to private school power King’s (which they pushed to a full three sets both times out) and 2A Anacortes.

The well-balanced attack Monday was led by Kylie Chernikoff, a swing player who thrashed all comers when playing at the JV level.

She closed with 10 kills, four service aces, and 12 digs, while freshman Maddie Georges added two kills, two aces, and 19 assists.

Jill Prince and Anya Leavell chipped in with four kills apiece, while Ryanne Knoblich picked up two and Taygin Jump smoked one.

Coupeville scorched the ball while at the service line, with Jaimee Masters picking up a team-high eight aces.

Alita Blouin added four, with Knoblich ringing up three.

Blouin (4), Gwen Gustafson (3), and Leavell (1) joined the dig brigade, scraping balls off the floor for Chris Smith’s squad.

It was there, and then it was gone.

For the second time this season, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball team snatched the opening set from King’s, only to see the Knights slip away in the end with a three-set win.

Thursday, playing in Shoreline, the Wolves ultimately fell 11-25, 25-13, 25-15, dropping to 7-2 in North Sound Conference play, 10-3 overall.

With one match left, next Monday at Sultan, the JV spikers have proven they can stand with anyone.

Their only losses have been to King’s, whose varsity squad is ranked #2 in 1A in the state poll, and 2A Anacortes.

Both of the matches with the Knights were tense, close affairs.

First time around, Coupeville actually won more points, coming out ahead 67-62, while losing 2-1 in sets.

In the rematch, King’s held a slight 61-53 advantage, but the Wolves fought until the final point.

“They played well,” said CHS coach Chris Smith while discussing his squad. “I was very pleased with how they played!”

Kylie Chernikoff led the way for the Wolves, pounding six kills, firing five aces, and scraping seven digs off the floor.

Spreading out the rest of the kills were Taygin Jump (4), Jill Prince (3), Anya Leavell (2), Maddie Georges (2), Ivy Leedy (1), and Alita Blouin (1).

Georges handed out 12 assists, Jump (7) and Blouin (6) were big on digs, and Heidi Meyers fired off four service aces.

Own the service line, own the match.

With Jaimee Masters and Maddie Georges going off at the stripe Tuesday, combining for nine aces while winning 32 points off their serves, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad was unbeatable.

While the final score, with the Wolves bouncing visiting Granite Falls 25-15, 25-22, 25-17, wasn’t a complete rout, there was never a moment when it felt like the home team was in the slightest danger.

Coupeville, now a shiny 7-1 in North Sound Conference play, 10-2 overall, trailed a couple of times, sure.

But 1-0 and 2-1 deficits in sets played to 25 points aren’t exactly the stuff of potential upsets.

It took the Wolves maybe two minutes to get fully chugging, and then the bombs started dropping.

Knotted up at 3-3 in the first set, Coupeville paged its nuclear bomb-launching outside hitter, with Kylie Chernikoff immediately answering the clarion call to arms.

Back-to-back big bombs off of the back line, with the second Chernikoff blast carving a path through a wave of defenders unwilling to stop the ball by sacrificing their faces, kicked things into high gear.

With Masters at the line, pegging aces, the lead soon soared to 12-4 and the Wolves never looked back.

Alita Blouin and Georges kicked in short, but sweetly effective, runs of their own at the line in the opening set, while Chernikoff, Jill Prince, and Taygin Jump took turns administering put-away shots.

A kill from Ryanne Knoblich ricocheted off a Granite player’s elbow, while Masters showed off the whole skill-set, dropping back-to-back kills from opposite sides of the court.

The second and third set were more of the same upbeat song for the Wolves, with Prince delivering a bone-crunching block that almost brought CHS coach Chris Smith to tears.

Happy, happy tears, but tears.

Georges and Masters controlled much of the set with their service games, while Jump decided to try and collect every single kill and put-away.

I said, every single one.

During one stretch, Jump had three consecutive winners, each offering a different style of attack.

On the first, the fab frosh came bounding in from the left side to smash the ball away from a Tiger.

Then, Jump tiptoed through the (invisible) tulips around the net on the next play, somehow staying a mere millimeter away from crashing through the barrier while controlling her body enough to flick a tip through the defense for another point.

And, just to complete the trifecta and debut a third dance of joy, she walloped the volleyball, which was screaming “Leave me alone, Taygin, you beast!,” as she windmilled a winner off a Granite player’s elbow.

Needing to catch her breath, at least for a moment, Jump ceded the spotlight to others after the one-two-three punch, so Anya Leavell sprang into action.

A sweet lil’ slicer kissed the court for a point, a tip evaded the defense for yet another, and then Leavell rose up, twirled through the clouds, and blasted a kill to complete her own trifecta of savage success.

With the Wolves rolling merrily along, everyone delivered big-time plays down the stretch, with Prince dominating at the net, Ivy Leedy popping a winner or two, and Heidi Meyers lashing sizzlin’ serves.

Not to be forgotten, Chernikoff, who tore up the Tigers defense with a match-high 14 kills, delivered one of the hardest-hit winners of the season at any level.

Roaring in from the left side of the floor as Georges flicked a picture-perfect set into the air, Kylie the Killer elevated, then hung in the air for an eternity, half her body above the net.

One word, three letters, one syllable, could be heard coming across the floor, almost in a whisper, and it sent chills up the spines of every Tiger she was eye-balling.

“Run!!!”

The smart ones did.

The rest closed their eyes and prayed for their very souls, as Chernikoff punched a hole through the universe, the ball screaming downward to rip up the floorboards, then blow a hole through the back wall of the gym.

And that was about the last time any Granite player was willing to get anywhere near the ball. Maybe ever again.

For Smith, who was rockin’ and rollin’ from his perch next to the bench, wearing the smile of a coach who loves his job and loves seeing his players blow up the world, it was a nice cap to a strong team-wide performance.

Chernikoff added seven digs to her massive pile of kills, while Georges dealt out 26 assists to go with four aces.

Jump (nine kills, four digs), Masters (three kills, five aces, two digs), Prince (four kills and that eye-popping block), Leavell (three kills), Blouin (three assists, two digs, and some quietly spectacular saves to keep plays going), Knoblich (two kills), and Leedy (two kills) rounded out the stat sheet.

Not to be forgotten, Meyers and Abby Mulholland, in street clothes as she recovers from a concussion, were exuberant supporters of their teammates.

Jaimee Masters and the Wolves are now 8-2 on the season.

Kylie Chernikoff had a message for her foes Tuesday night, and she delivered it loud ‘n proud.

“Get prepared, ladies, cause the butt-whuppins’ are a’coming!!”

Now, since Chernikoff is among the friendliest of all athletes, it’s possible she didn’t say those exact words out loud.

But let’s just imagine she was thinking them.

Cause she certainly played like it.

Delivering 15 kills, five services aces, and six digs, Chernikoff filled up a huge chunk of the score-book by herself, pacing the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad to a straight-sets win in Bothell.

The 25-16, 25-22, 25-9 dismantling of host Cedar Park Christian lifts the Wolf young guns to a sterling 5-1 in North Sound Conference play, 8-2 overall.

With nine players seeing floor time for CHS, Wolf coach Chris Smith got a balanced, and very-effective attack.

The fab frosh were busy, as Maddie Georges doled out a team-high 18 assists, Alita Blouin went low to scrape five digs off the floor, and Taygin Jump mashed five kills, nailed five aces, and collected four digs.

Georges added four aces to the cause, while Abby Mulholland (one kill, one dig), Jill Prince (one kill), Jaimee Masters (two kills, one ace, one dig), Anya Leavell (one kill), and Ivy Leedy all brought intensity and hustle to their roles for the high-flying Wolves.

Coupeville returns to action Thursday, when it travels to Langley to face arch-rival South Whidbey.

The Wolves will be going for the season sweep of their next-door neighbors.

Ivy Leedy and Co. are now 7-2 on the season.

Quick turnaround, quicker win.

Less than 24 hours after dismantling Sultan at home, the Coupeville High School JV volleyball squad was back at it Thursday night, thrashing Port Townsend on the road.

The ferry ride probably took longer than the match, as the Wolves cruised in with a 25-5, 25-8, 25-8 win over the RedHawks.

With the non-conference victory, Coupeville’s young guns send their record soaring to a pretty dang good 7-2 on the season.

CHS coach Chris Smith kept his bench hoppin’ Thursday, rotating in 11 players, with all of them having an impact on play.

Freshman setter Maddie Georges kept the offense clicking, doling out 14 assists to go with seven service aces and two kills.

Also coming up big were Abby Mulholland and Taygin Jump, who each pounded six aces, while Kylie Chernikoff crushed her enemies, saw them driven before her, and enjoyed the lamentation of the women as she sprayed seven kills.

The rest of Coupeville’s stat line on the night:

Alita Blouin — one kill
Chernikoff — three aces, one dig
Jump — two kills
Ryanne Knoblich — two kills, one ace, one dig
Anya Leavell — three kills
Jaimee Masters — three aces, two digs
Heidi Meyers — four aces
Mulholland — two kills

Jill Prince and Ivy Leedy also saw floor time for Coupeville, which gets back to North Sound Conference action next week, traveling Tuesday to Cedar Park Christian and Thursday to South Whidbey.
